Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch |OT|

Finally unlocked the (not a story spoiler, but some might consider it a spoiler nonetheless)
Casino. Not feeling it as much as I did DQ8's casino. I'm pretty good at blackjack, but the dealer gets an exorbitant amount of 20's off the bat, and she doesn't stop at 17 like a dealer is supposed to. Grr!
I also wasted my time on the horrible Double Cross minigame. Cleared all 5 stages and earned a few grey hairs in the process. Lol

Some casinos have dealers hit on soft 17.

On the other hand, the game could just be cheating.

I'm about 6 hours in and I have to say that the whole Sun / Moon / Star thing sucks so far.

Why are the icons so non-descriptive? The stone book doesn't even show the icons with the corresponding element. I still can't remember them.

Why does Sun beat Moon? Because of the larger mass? By that I mean that I don't get the logic behind their rock paper scissors thing. I can't remember what element beats which element for the life of me.

Here's an explanation if you need it.

Sun-Moon-Star

You can't remember that?

Now that I'm past the tutorial (the first 2 hours) and have done the first dungeon, it's not bad when you actually get to play the game. I do find it annoying that the monsters respawn like as soon as you even look around a corner 10 feet away, but otherwise combat is fine.

The side quests are meh, nothing special. Story is still incredibly generic and Oliver is a dumb ass (and is made fun of for being so on a regular basis). I'll probably beat the game due to the nice graphics and music, perhaps for the boss battles and such, but unless the story drastically improves (lol yeah right - this is Level5) it'll be a very forgettable game for me.

At some point, I somehow lost track of the story through a one minute lapse in attention. At roughly the 20 hour mark, in Hamelin,
after you have your first conversation with the sage/prince, then you start talking to the emperor in the large room, apparently you're sent back in time? I didn't even realize it until I went to fetch the kids, was I just not paying attention or did this part happen sort of quickly?

The harsh truth.

It happens quickly.

So, how much does the complete Witch Edition with Drippy weigh? and how much without Drippy in the box? that'll be the way to tell if you got drippy and want to keep it sealed :)

I've never seen that, so that might be it. I do think she's cheating regardless, though. :p

I also have the worst luck with slots ever.

Yeah, unfortunately, I also missed the part where they realize it. They didn't seem to make a big deal about it. Not big enough for me to notice as I was skimming the unvoiced dialogue, anyway.
They didn't realize it until they spoke with the emperor in the throne room. I think the fog was supposed to be the visual indication of you going back in time, but it obviously wasn't made very clear.

OT: Has anyone ever noticed how frequently on the thread page do Ni No Kuni OT and Ni No Kuni Collector's edition thread are placed right one after the other?

Nope, because the CE thread is getting like 50 posts for every one post here. (._. )

OMG

I just bought it...

For real.

Not sure if I should have, the last day or two people have been ripping on the battle system which, honestly, was the part I was most excited about...

Ugh, getting some buyers remorse...to open or not to open. I'm terrified right now and my friend Josh isn't around to help.
Ya same here, i am looking at my 87% after 2 and a half day of download and reading the thread lol i have nothing else to do :O, and not excited as i was at the start, i really hope is not that bad, i was hoping for a great magical experience tho :(

That is kind of what I was expecting to hear. Take one for the team and update me when you are up to 10-15 hours.

Why does Sun beat Moon?

Not as good a question as to why Star beats Sun, or why they are two different things.

The story had no chance of being good since Hino wrote it. At least he didn't direct the game, so most of the other stuff wasn't under his control!

What the hell is the secret to beating this damn
genie... I get him down and all he does is the same attack over and over that protects him from attacks

Edit: I would beat him right after I type this... He stopped doing that stupid attack.

There's a lot of nerd rage happening in the CE thread. I ordered it on the 17th too, but my order was cancelled today (and refunded thank god) so no Wizard Edition for me.

At this point, though, I'm cool with that - the $54.95 I already spent is more than this game is really worth at this point anyway.

Probably sometime this weekend. I can only do like 2 - 4 hours in a session (I usually binge on RPG's) before I'm tired of it.

Is that bad? :(

So people are hating on this now? I think it's fine as is. Not having any problems so far with the ai they usually kill everything before I do.

So we're pretty sure this game takes place in the 1950's right?

That's what Hino said, anyway.

The game starts in Motorville, a very romantic, nostalgic interpretation of a 1950s American city. Why start the game there, as opposed to perhaps a Japanese or European setting, and why pick that time period?

Hino: Motorville is modelled after an American town in the heyday of the auto industry during the 1950s and 60s. It made sense because the young protagonist, Oliver, is a boy interested in cars and machines.

So can people in Motorville notice Oliver talking to Drippy? Do they just see him carrying and talking to a doll? They must think he cracked after his mother's death or something.

I think the story probably resonates more with older people, and people that have children. Oliver is crushingly adorable and while people have described things as clichéd,
I understood exactly what they were going for as Mr. Drippy sputtered to life, his title invented on the spot, Oliver creating this world as an escape from his grief. Very childlike, very Ghibli-like even if it's a bit Ghibli-lite.
I think it's really touching so far.

This has happened to me with almost every Level-5 game so far. I think I'm glad I didn't give in and buy the game. I've got a few games I really want to finish, and don't need another. I'll pick this up down the line at some point.

So far, that would explain pretty much everything except
the antagonist intervening in car ride in an attempt to assassinate Oliver.
I'm not that far into the story yet though.

I'm mostly loving this game because it's the first real full JRPG I've played on a current gen console.

Mimics my experience as well. Some of the story segments are god awful, like the bit when you get your first party member. It's like the game is trying to get some emotional response from the player, but it's all badly handled and comes out laughable. I think the only reason I might continue playing is due to Drippy.

Edit: I will say this, "Pure hearted" characters might be great for saving the world... but god damn are they boring story wise.

Well seems i made a huge mistake purchasing this game :( , 1Gb to go tho i'll see the disaster by myself :(
Meh i feel i wasted almost 3 days of download for nothing =( , i have some spare cash on the wallet for Journey tho i hope it is fun :)

So people are hating on this now? I think it's fine as is. Not having any problems so far with the ai they usually kill everything before I do.

Have you fought a boss with them yet? I have absolutely no problems with my partners during normal battles in the world, actually they're pretty darn good. The problems arise during the boss fights. During boss fights they mostly act the way they normally do during a regular fight, which they shouldn't. For example during a boss battle the boss dropped a MP orb and I saw my partner's familiar literally stop and walk over too it (I didn't say that wrong either, they literally walked too it). Also they most of the time switch out familiars like crazy repeatedly. I sat their during the boss battle and saw them switch back and forth not even moving.

So during regular enemy fights the AI is awesome, but during boss fights their faults show. Can't say that I went one boss fight so far without my partners all dying off (except for one which was because I was overleveled, and the boss was really easy).

The game is great, give it a chance. I first heard of this game 4 days ago and bought it blindly after watching a couple of videos on the game, i was scared to open it after reading some posts in this thread. Couldnt be happier i did though, only put in 5 or so hours today, but so far so good.

Experience it for yourself before thinking that! D:

Potentially spoilery like crazy:
One is correct.

Yeah, it's more forgiving than even Dragon Quest.
Is there a bank? Because that 10% could end up a lot harsher in the late game.

And yeah, this really isn't out of line for RPGs, honestly DQ was forward thinking in a way 90% of JRPGs before this generation (and maybe 80% this generation) didn't really care to follow.

Was one of the lucky few who got their Wizard's Edition today, the book is incredible. As bad as Namco Bandai has fucked up the WE stuff, at least the package itself is fantastic.

Know what else is fantastic? THIS FREAKING GAME. Played the first 3 hours and I am just enchanted by everything. The music, the visuals, the combat, this is easily becoming my favorite JRPG next to Persona 4.
