Nier: Automata PC performance thread

Man... pop in is my most hated technical enemy in games. It's this way in the PS4 version, so I doubt they'll patch it out.

Is it exactly as bad though? Some people where saying it was worse.

I feel the same as you and am about to play the PC version. I'm just hoping there is something that can be done about it. I really, really hate pop in. Especially if it's that bad...

I'm about to find out in a minute if I can bear it. But the fact that I even need to try is a bad thing.

Played for a couple hours with a Phenom II X4 955/GTX 1060 6GB at 1080p (borderless) with everything on high and 4x AA, runs mostly at 60fps with occasional drops to the 50s, not bad at all when taking into consideration how outdated my CPU is.

The game is stuck at 24FPS... This is with a Titan XP and the game at 900p. Tried full screen and windowed. My monitor is set to 144hz.

It could be GSYNC... I'll try turning that off.

Resolution in Fullscreen is bugged.
Borderless windowed makes it work as expected.

It's the one you have quoted. No crashes since.

So Crimson Edition 16.11.5, before ReLive.

It's very strange to me that the cutscenes rendered out at 30 in a game that targets 60 even on console.

Also istrange that playback is an issue that sounds like it varies from machine to machine.
Maybe something with whatever video decoder they're using?

Are the cutscenes prerendered? If so, then it's not weird (just sad).

If the scenes are realtime instead, why would they lock the cutscenes to 30 fps when the game runs easily at 60?

Well I think I need a new video card, but it's still playable. I have a GTX 770.

The rest of my system is as follows:

Intel Core i5-2500k @ 4.3GHz
16GB DDR3 Memory
GTX 770

I put it on high initially, bad idea, it ran at terrible sub-20 framerates. Put it down to medium, have 2x AA, turned off AO, runs in the 40s-50s. It's playable, not ideal. I am playing in borderless window with Borderless Gaming. Any other performance tips on this system, or is this as good as it will get for me?

Edit: Forgot to mention I am playing at 1080p

So, is the no AA option actually FXAA? Seems like there's some anti-aliasing being applied.

I think it might be temporal AA, it looks pretty good tbh.

Turn off the 2xMSAA, MSAA is absurdly resource intensive. The game still applies a post processing AA filter even with the option off.

Oh yeah, has anyone addressed controller stuff yet?

Despite getting it to register in big picture mode, I actually can't use my Switch pro controller in the game.

Is there something else I need to do?

(xinput, etc.)

Just played for 4 hours. Game stayed locked at 60 fps the whole time @ 1080p, everything turned on except for MSAA.

i7 4770K, 32 GB RAM, GF980.

I was also able to get 1080p full screen working by literally just alt + entering a couple of times, it started out at 1680x1050 but after a couple of alt enters it sorted itself out and went to 1080. Weird.
Hmm, that's close to what I have. May actually give this a go on PC.

Getting a solid 60 @ 1080p with most up high (no anti aliasing, med shadows) on a 1060 but it's running it's pretty hot (70c)

Will mess around more with the settings once I get past the first mission.

As much as I want Automata to be perfect, it does suffer with some performance issues. The frame rate can drop to some surprising levels; but not in combat, instead when simply exploring and running around the environment. As I mentioned earlier, the dense distance fog should have helped with pop in and texture issues, but it doesn't, I encountered them all the time when exploring the city scape of the open world but didn't have issues in other areas.

Looks like that section of the game specifically has terrible pop in, but other areas don't. Looks like it's not a PC specific thing. I noticed it a lot in the reviews that showed that area.

I'm using x360ce and it works flawlessly.

Will it run at 30 fos at least in 4k on a 980ti? Had no idea itvreleased today, thought it was delayed 2 weeks from the ps4 version.

Controller issues are concerning. I still haven't played Transformers Devastation because of such issues. I don't think they accounted for the Windows 10 Anniversary Update fuckery.

Possibly, but I don't know why you'd want to play a fast paced action game @ 30fps. It's nothing special graphically.

Kind of bummed by this port. Dare I say it's poorly optimized or whatever, but it's not looking good for me. Switching around settings from high to medium or even low, and I'm not getting a solid 60fps at any point. i5-4690k, GTX 970, 1080p, borderless windowed. Might buy the PS4 version or something.

Just remembered that Transmorphers was a perfect PC port (on my PC at least). I'm saddened to read all these performance issues for Nier.

Then I also remembered that it just runs at 900p on regular PS4 and 1080p on PS4 Pro, and with dips on both. Maybe this Nier engine is just trash.

I need to try full screening it, that tends to have better performance than windowed mode right?

Looks like Reshade works with this -- the first preset just went up.

Injected AA might look pretty good with this (since it seems to have some kind of AA with MSAA off). Injected FXAA or SMAA might look pretty decent with less of a performance hit than the MSAA.

Some slight color correction looked pretty okay in the preset's screenshots. Kind of got rid of the "washed out" filter, if more vibrant colors are your thing.

OK, so I used the borderless window application from the start since people where saying it improved performance.

I'm on a 280X and at 1080p with AA off and medium shadow quality I'm getting mostly 60fps during gameplay.
I'm having issues with the controller though (360 controller), when there's a tutorial prompt on screen it appears with the keyboard prompt and when I press a button on the controller the prompt shakes like crazy switching between both prompts.
Also, the mouse cursor randomly appears in the center of the screen.

I just did this and the program recognizes that the thing is plugged in, but I'm still not able to push buttons in steam games.

Do I need to switch it to controller 1 or something? If so, how do I do this?

Thanks for the help.

Damn, now that I'm hearing mixed things, I'm not sure if I should grab this on PS4 or PC

Will I be okay at 1440p with a 1070/6600k/16 GB rig?

Made a slight difference, still get in the 40s-50s.

Yes you will be fine. I have the same setup except I have a 6700k and it's buttery smooth besides the pre rendered cutscenes.

Don't see why not. I'm getting a few drops (minor only) but it's running smoothly at 60fps for the most part. 4690/480 8 GB/16 GB. The cutscenes are shit though.

I bought the game on PS4 because I was impatient but was going to buy again on pc it the frame rate was unlocked. That's too bad that it's not

This game buckles quite a bit on the PS4 Pro. But it doesn't happen when there is a lot of on the screen, but when you just run around. So there might be some streaming related issue. And yeah, this game is ugly as hell at some points and the art barely hides that.

Game bugged on me twice when coming out of conversations and nothing happening. I couldn´t move or access the menu lol. Other than that it´s been running... fine? Cutscenes stutter though.

Game is mostly GPU intensive. Also, I had a Phenom II X4(albeit 965) until recently and it is still a pretty decent CPU.

Anyway, can confirm that rolling back the AMD drivers has fixed the white screen crash issue for me. Played for about an hour with no problems. Now the only issue left is the annoying stuttering during the cutscenes, although my FPS shows constant 30 during them it feels extremely janky.

Bit sad I can't seem to get above 50 FPS in the city at 1080p even with AA at x2 and shadows medium on a 1060 and i54460. I've had much more detailed games do better :(

Yeah it's roaming around the world that's messing up my framerates, not like hectic battles

I'm playing on a pro and it has random drops so I'm sure it's A lot worse on a regular PS4. You should definitely stick with pc if you're running a 1070. If you buy on steam you can always get a refund if it doesn't work well for you

Same issue as PS4 pro. I had a feeling this would also be happening on pc

So my experience.

  • Flawless performance (but that is to be expected with a gtx 1060 on a shit ass 11 year old 1680x1050 16:10 monitor), but the cutscenes run at 30fps but appear to play much lower, maybe 20fps, for no reason at all. Straight back to 60fps after that, and it seems not all cutscenes are like that. Others are in game and run brilliantly.

    i5-6600k 4.2ghz
    gtx 1060 6gb @ 1680x1050
    16gb ram

  • Couldn't be arsed moving to the tv and couldn't be arsed downsampling, but should easily be able to. For now just running at "max" with 8xMSAA, looks pretty great.
  • UI is stretch vertically a tiny bit due to 16:10 but not a big deal since the game itself runs at the right aspect ratio.
  • Steam Controller is interesting. The mouse-joystick right pad is awesome for the third person aiming / camera controls, but you need a traditional stick for the shmup stuff - so go the left grip mode shifting it with a double tap toggle - - - Superb!

You need to put the dll and ini files it generates in the game folder. Then it should work.

GTX 1080 and i7 4770k here. No performance issues so far with everything on High except for V-sync and blur turned off. I am not sure if the game is upscaling in full screen, but I set it to Window and used Borderless gaming software to get borderless with the proper resolution.

I wish we can access the config files and increase the LOD and draw distance. Anyway, the game ran fine for the duration of the tutorial; the cutscenes where very choppy at some instances (didn't look like 30fps).

I might have problems with my G-sync monitor though, since I have to play at full screen.

Folks on 16.11.5, please report back if this really solved your issues! I tried 16.12.2 and 17.3.2, to no avail. If 11.5 saves us, then I am opening this whisky on the shelf.

If you want good performance, you don't want the ps versions either.

Browsing over some problems people are having, 24hz, fucked up aspect ratios. Platinum has learned absolutely nothing from Metal Gear Rising, which had the exact same issues at launch and still has them.

Truly fucked up. Wont be buying until deep sale on steam.
