Nier: Automata PC performance thread

Okay, so Kaldaien's fullscreen fix actually works fine with Afterburner, but hates RTSS even running.

I am definitely getting way more performance problems with it than I was just using borderless and RTSS though.

Quoting myself since returning to borderless window has greatly improved the transitions between different areas. I don't know, maybe the fix does not work properly for me.

I was having that same issue only it was when I was using borderless window and rtss. I'm going to try the fix now.

So any word on a official patch from Platinum?

I want to get the game but I don't want to jump through hoops, or play the lottery with possible issues.

Is there an ETA or any chatter on official Nier forums?

How's the game on a 970 GTX? Or should I stick with PS4?

Couldn't maintain 60 fps on anything higher than 1080p. I settled on:
16x Texture Filtering
4x AA
AO on
Shadows Medium
Effects High

There were still some drops in certain areas and situations, but they were small enough that I didn't really notice them with my GSYNC monitor.

Borderless Windowed always hurts performance on my PC, so I was kind of waiting for a fix, official or otherwise. With FAR, I think I've got some final impressions in regards this game's performance. I'm running on an i7 2600 w/ a GTX 1060 (6GB), 8GB of RAM, w/ Windows 10. With everything set to high, AA + AO + Motion Blur disabled, and FXAA forced through Nvidia Inspector, I manage to hit 1080p 60 pretty well! It's not perfect; when running through the open world, there are quick drops to 50fps that immediately pick themselves up, probably due to the engine loading the world. The only other time frames drop is when I'm fighting several enemies at once. I noticed it occurs when particle effects start flying around, which makes enough sense. Typically down to 55-50, depending on the number of enemies. And it's more of a consistent drop than world loading, so it's not much of a bother.

Built-in AA, AO, and Motion Blur cause frames to drop more frequently, so I disabled them. That said, I like anti-aliasing, so I enabled Nvidia's FXAA on the game, and it worked fine with no performance impact. I also checked to see how much of a difference AO made on the game, and it seems to be a really light effect. It definitely does work, it's just so gentle that it's really not worth the hit to performance. And I've never been a fan of motion blur at 60fps, so that one isn't too big of a deal. Fullscreen vs borderless, I'm definitely noticing a slight improvement, so I'm really happy with FAR. So the game is looking pretty nice on my system, and running fairly well too. Visually, I'm guessing it's just a notch under PS4 Pro levels, since that version has motion blur and (presumably) AO enabled, but it's close enough that I'm happy with it. Hopefully future patches can get it there, though!

Yes sorry, I said 'Afterburner' when I meant RTSS. (since AB uses RTSS)
Adding an exception for the game's executable to RTSS worked for me - though I am running the latest RTSS beta which could make a difference.
That said, I've found an increasing number of programs which do not like RTSS running after some recent changes to it, and I'm starting to think it would be best to whitelist allowed apps instead of blacklisting others.

I've found that Kaldaien's framerate limiter can end up inducing further stutter when you're just barely managing to hit 60fps.
That's true of any framerate limiter.
And since you can reduce the number of frames buffered from 4 to 1, that also has the potential for less consistent performance if your system is struggling to hit 60 FPS.

Turn off AA entirely. It's MSAA and expensive. You still get postprocessing AA from having AO on.

Also worth saying that, at least according to his thread on the steam forums, you can enable triple buffering by changing from 2 to 3, which should help with that while still keeping it fullscreen, for people who prefer it for any reason.

So you don't have to deal with the stutter caued by this, it's just that the default settings aim for the least possible amount of input lag while still not having the screen full of tearing.

Has anyone else noticed a small drop in performance as running time increases? I get nice very smooth play for about 90 minutes to 2 hours then I start getting some minor hitching.

I've also noticed Borderless Gaming CPU utilization increases over this time as well. It starts at like 2% and climbs to like 15% over the course of a session.

I did play around with that @ 1440p after reading info here. I was not able to get a stable 60 fps with AA off, everything on low/off except AO on on the 970, so I went with those settings at 1080p. Upgrading to 1080ti when the custom editions start coming out, so I can make full use of this monitor.

First crash though. But what an awesome moment to crash. ._.

Anyone try the new Nvidia drivers on this?
The new drivers still don't have a profile for Nier Automata, so expect no change there.

I personally just added the executable to the Metal Gear Rising profile and threw in my SLI profile for good measure. Not sure it's made any positive difference (aside from the SLI which obviously improves things immensely on that front), but I figured it was worth a shot.

Nvidia just has a spotty track record with creating profiles for Japanese games in general. Not sure if they'll ever get around to it.

Given the AA/AO thing getting figured out, I'd be ready to take the plunge on this if the full screen bug were fixed. I know I can use borderless gaming, but that's not an acceptable fix to me for many reasons.

Can I ask what reasons?

Also, Kaldaien's mod does fix the full screen issue, at the cost of performance for some people. If you have a good PC that could be the way to go about it.

There is an (unofficial) fix for this. It works great, and is incredibly easy to install. Just plop the files into the N:A directory and you're good to go. You can get it right here.

Sure. To be clear, I don't mean to denigrate the work of the Borderless Gaming authors or Kaldaien/other modders who endeavor to fix games like this. These are just my opinions and reasons. I'm grateful that the PC is such an active community for people who are interested in solutions like this.

As to why I don't want to do it:

1) I resent paying full price for a game that needs additional third-party software to run correctly. That's the biggest one. For a brand new, full-priced game, basic issues like rendering in the resolution you select just shouldn't exist. Happy to pay for it after they fix it.

2) I have a pretty good PC (i5 6500, GTX 1070, 16GB RAM), but this game is also pretty demanding. If I want to run this at 1440p smoothly, I need every ounce of performance. These solutions have a cost.

3) I want to keep my PC immaculate. My plan is to install literally nothing on it beyond the software necessary to run my hardware (e.g. the Nvidia stuff), Google Chrome, Steam, and maybe Origin if I decide to buy Mass Effect. I more-or-less want to treat it like a really powerful console with its hygeniec ecosystem.

Can I do 1080p 60 FPS with this?

GTX 1080 Strix
5820k 4 GHz OC'd
32 GB RAM

It's probably a weird/dumb question, but Im hearing so many different reports I just have to ask.

You can extremely easily do that.

The confusing reports are from people reporting framerates with 8x MSAA enabled.

Disabled all AA (not AO) and still getting drops from 60 at 1600p with a GTX1080. It does tend to stay at 60 most of the time but yea in certain sections it just drops.

Weird thing for me is that it drops when I'm just strolling around exploring. Whenever I'm actually in combat it somehow manages to stay at 60.

In case someone is falling a little short of reaching 60 fps in 1080p with AA off, I recommend trying to lower to 900p and raise AA to 4X. I gained around 5 fps and the image quality isn't too bad.

6600k/1070/16 GB here

Rolling with:

No AA
AO on
8x Texture Filtering
Motion Blur off
Shadows on Medium
Effects High

This seems to be alright for the most part. There are some dips here and there, but nothing too distracting.

I also have the Fullscreen fix installed, which allows me to run it at 1440.

Anyone know how to disable the yellow PC stats from the patch though?

Has anyone had good results with this? From here and the Steam page comments it doesn't seem like this fixes the cutscene stuttering issue.

I did the fix yesterday (downloaded the tools instead of the fixed usm files) and it did fix the stuttering issue for me.

Huh, is a 1070 not powerful enough to handle 16x Texture Filtering, Motion Blur, and High shadows at 1440p?

That's just bad optimization, right? This game doesn't look like it would be THAT demanding.

Look, I get that people with 8x MSAA enabled reported bad performance, but you shouldn't put everyone in the same box.
I have a machine that should handle the game well and it doesn't (and that's after disabling almost everything, which of course includes MSAA)

You like the game (I like it too) but that shouldn't get in the way of people talking about the performance issues that some people are experiencing. Seems like every "I have bad performance" comment gets shut down with "disable MSAA" without even asking the person who commented if that was applicable or not.

The DualShock 4 button mod was updated and it has fixed the issue with the prompt above NPCs.

Since turning off AA, I'm having smooth performance at 1440p, full screen, max, vsync. Didn't apply any mod, and no crashes so far. So guys, turn off AA!
