NieR: Automata review thread

I know Yoko taro games dont review well , but why do people expect this to drop so much? The game seems amazing.

Its a Yoko Taro game. It has to drop at some point. None of his games have ever gotten above a 70, they are definitely not for everyone by design, to say nothing of expectations with Platinum making the combat system. But i think it'll be accepted enough to still get good review scores in general.

The game is a 10 out of 10 in every way i like video games period, but its harder to tell how western reviewers will take this sort of thing.

It has one of the best stories of this generation, comparing it to Platinum's in house stories almost feels like an insult.

And yeah for those asking about the music, 11 out of 10. Seriously. At this point i have about 14 songs i've been cycling through on repeat for the past week. Its addicting, and i'm kind of scared i'm going to get sick of them from overplaying them so much, but for now i havent

Lol, I'm not comparing. Just stating the obvious since Platinum games have shit stories.

Very confident about the music in this game.

Based on my playtime with it, it has some gameplay flaws that you have to be willing to accept in order to have a good time with it.

  • Empty open world/uninteresting world structure
  • Lack of enemy variety
  • Repetitive sidequests (gameplay-wise)
  • Playing as 9S

Plus you have the less-than-stellar visuals and uneven performance (the second one is apparently more pronounced on base PS4, but I've had some issues on Pro as well).

What's wrong
with 9S?

I'm surprised they tweeted that.

Honestly my advice to you guys and them as well would be 1) not to get too excited about this average as it stands now as most of these reviews are from no-name sites with little to no clout whatsoever and 2) it's a Yoko Taro game. How much do the reviews really matter?

I still expect it to be divisive among the major outlets. I have no idea what the average will be, but I never guess at that.

Edit: Yeah, no surprise they deleted. Was a little tacky tbh

Need some time to digest it and have not heard all of the songs, but for now it's up there with the original Nier OST.

People in the OT thread are saying that by some miracle they actually think the sequel has the better OST, or at least is its equal.

Well fuck me, this game has done the impossible. Can't wait for Emi Evans gibberish. Guess bloodborne might be losing its top rank in my ps4 collection.

Probably cause when the full embargo drops, if the metacritic drops a decent bit, it may come across as them counting their chickens before the eggs hatch sort of situation.

I dont know why it bothers them? Its obviously just a joke. They, including yoko taro were joking about how they wanted people to take screenshots of the moment Nier beat Horizon and competed with Zelda before the score inevitably went down

The combat gets super repetitive up to a point.
your weapon is intentionally weak so you basically need to be hacking all the time, and with bigger enemies you just need to kind of hope you get one of the easier patterns. It doesn't help that there doesn't seem to be a whole ton of variety in the hacking stages, from what I've played so far.

Haha.

Where was this tweet?

i've seen certain points down the line, they get super elaborate and complex at parts, its actually gets pretty difficult for people i've seen in streams to pass them with

I love Emi's role in Nier, but this time she's actively backed up by strong vocal actors in Nicole and other singers(not to say the back up singers in the OG were bad). Its amazing how much variety is packed into this game on the musical level to the point where literally everyone sounds consistent in how great they sing and how samples themselves are layered

Hacking, basically. Playing as 9S takes out most of the fun from 2B's combat and pressures you into hacking enemies instead, which is a bite-size twin stick shooter mini-game. I wouldn't mind if you only had to do this every so often, but if you want to kill enemies in any respectable amount of time, you have to do it constantly because of how weak 9S is at melee combat. It gets worse with bigger enemies since there are some patterns that are just a pain in the ass to do, and sometimes you have to hack them 2-3 times before you can kill them.

The review sample is self-selecting towards greater enthusiasm. Any reviews out ahead of the embargo are people who imported the game from Japan, which shows that they were already particularly excited for it. We'll get people with a wider range of attitudes towards the genre and the franchise once the Western embargo ends.

I suppose some of this will also depend on playstyles and setups but I wasn't too bothered to be honest. But I can see where others might be. In the end though. That is sort of the hallmark of platinum games

Yeah, wait for the 'real' reviews to come in. Generally I only value Easy Allies, Eurogamer and Edge. But i don't give a fuck, its fucking Nier 2. PG x Taro. I wish I had it right now, done with Y0 and Nioh. But going to wait for the physical.

Though I could pick up Horizon now and play that the coming week...

Any spoilers in this video?

It shows a few locations the past trailers haven't covered, like the amusement park. There's only one cutscene very briefly being shown that apparently unlocks a trophy. Without context it's hard to know what's happening there, but I suppose if you look at the trophy title, it's somewhat suggestive.

I just wanted him to go through those 7-8 seconds when he compares the OST to the first game, so I started it at 5:19.

9S stuff

Treat 9S as a ranged attacker and use the spear throw. It is a million times more efficient than hacking over and over. I only ended up hacking really big enemies with huge HP pools by the end, and my 9S was a more efficient killer than even 2B.

I know the tongue was firmly in cheek and all, but it shouldn't come from an official channel when reportedly there aren't enough review codes going around and with an embargo that no one seems to know when it ends - probably at release date.

You didn't mention it in your review but what did you think of
the specific twists and turns in the story going from one playthrough to the next? Did they hit the right notes for you?

Gotcha. I'll just wait. I've come this far. Surprised I've been able to follow the KT so closely and not be spoiled on a single story beat.

Yeah, exactly. It's funny, but an official promo channel bragging about standing next to Zelda getting 10s from IGN, GS, Edge, etc while it has 9s from various sites I'd honestly never heard of prior to the creation of this very thread, yeah, those are poor optics.

That said, I don't think the game will tank critically or anything. The current generation of games press is way more aware of niche stuff, most RPGs are reviewed by genre aficionados, and SE seems to have done a good job communicating what the game is going for.

I think that post saying the embargo lifts on Monday at 9am est is accurate.

hmmn. I thought I did. But yes I loved it. LOVED it.

Also as always I went with a retail version as well.
