NieR: Automata Spoiler Thread

I didn't sacrifice my save data at the end, what does that do? Is that what you need to do so your avatar comes in and helps people shoot through the credits?

Does it give you a special cool cutscene or anything

You get a special title screen and yeah, your avatar helps dudes.

Here's what I wanna know...so your save helping other people is a one time deal, right? Dude gets hit while you're helping and your save is gone from the server, right? Theoretically...not that it would happen anytime soon...but what would happen if the server just runs out of people's saves? Noone bothers to delete his saves to help others anymore. What then?

Yes, that's it. You give your data away and complete a small sentenced that the other person can see (those phrases floating around when you ask for help). Thank god some people do sacrifice their data, because I would never have beaten that section otherwise. So I felt obliged to sacrifice my data as well after that (I did a backup anyway).

It gives you a... different menu background. That's it.

Tbf the pod does make sure that you understand that you will get nothing in return (even though you do get a small thing).

They probably have automatically generated ones to come help. Otherwise how did the first dozens players beat the game?

Wait it was? I must've missed that. I knew their memories were wiped though.

I'm pretty sure that's what was implied. The originals instead of being scrapped had their memories wiped and instilled with a sense of guilt and shame. During the text adventure they talk about feeling guilt for doing something that wasn't even their fault.

Just got [E]nd of YoRHa. Awesome game all around.

I was hoping we would get an explanation for Accord and Cathedral City in this game considering the descriptions of what the Old World is like in Drakengard. Accord is only mentioned by the weapons merchant in the Resistance Camp. I was really hoping for more information than that alone.

Regarding Adam and Eve: When Eve sprouted from Adam's body, my mind immediately jumped to The Flower [D3]. Since the threats of White Chlorination Syndrome and Maso are most likely not around by the time the aliens arrive, it seems unlikely that the machine lifeforms encountered some Red Eye/Legion remains that could have affected their programming to lead to the result we see in the game. So, if that's not the case, is it just more imitation on their part or just complete coincidence that their behaviors match up with things like The Flower, The Empire, and Cult of the Watchers [D1]?

Yea, but I thought they weren't literally the same Devola and Popola from the first game, especially due to the part about being made to feel guilty for something they didn't do.

They can't be. Nier killed Devola and Emil obliterated their bodies at the end of NieR.

I'm pretty sure they re-programmed every single remaining Devola & Popola model to feel that guilt. The document concerned the whole model line.

And, well, this:
They can't be. Nier killed Devola and Emil obliterated their bodies at the end of NieR.

It's not the same Devola and Popola. Those were destroyed by Emil in the original Nier I think. Been awhile since I played it. This Devola and Popola specifically talk about the other D and P and how they were being punished for their sins. All D and P models were made to feel guilty for the sins of the D and P from Nier and that's why they sacrifice themselves..

Wow reading through this thread it looks like I missed so many details of the plot goddamn fuck

I finished it with about 80% completion and thought I knew enough.
I felt the same as you. Took another play through and lots of reading here to fully flush it all out.

I'm trying to put the pieces together myself. One thing that really had me intrigued was a poster here on gaf translated some angelic script and the machines said " We are one. We are eternal. We are legion." Also another thing interesting to me is at the end of Route C the boss says, " We are network" I figured network to a machine is the equivalent as legion to a human. There is also the Cult of the Watchers symbol on Eve that is not explained. Another interesting thing is Red Girl having a twin and they look like Manah from Drakengard and One from Drakengard 3. One made a twin out of one of her ribs. Her twin would go on to start the Cult of the Watchers if I recall correctly.

The interesting thing about the children's cores is that it can be sold for profit. In fact it's only purpose seems to be sold for money. So, you can literally profit off the souls of dead children. Yeah, Taro is fucked up.
I bought everything else he sells for upgrade materials. But I couldn't buy those.

And I think I have to kill him now on subsequent plays. He's an unwitting monster this way.

Don't forget that the Manah look-alike grew wumbo-sized in the hackerspace fight.

Given the game is about cycles, and it is canon that even the Drakengard universe turns into Nier eventually...Would it really be surprising if the Machines actually are the Watchers come full circle?

That's kind of how I viewed the whole thing. That eventually the machines that flew off into space would become the Watchers of yet another universe and the cycle would begin anew elsewhere.

Yeah, as soon as I saw that I had Drakengard flashbacks. Taro was kind of right when he said fans of the old games might be more confused then new players.

I bought them but just to keep I never intended to sell them. I noticed that you can make a profit off them and then I started to figure it out.

Yeah, I could definitely see that. I have a more optimistic view though and I think the machines have a fresh start and I think they can live in peace. At least I hope so. Cycle could just repeat.

Yeah I'm pretty convinced "Legion" = the Watchers/Grotesqueries/Angels. The writing on the boxes is in Angelic which is the canon name of the Watchers, so maybe the machines become the Watchers eventually?

But Angelus and the Queen Grotesquery opening a portal into modern day Tokyo is what causes Nier to happen in the first place...

I have no fucking clue how Accord fits into this, she's an android that watches over timelines for someone. One's brother forms the Cult of the Watchers and One's brother was formed out of One like Adam and Eve which is also a biblical reference like Legion and Angels and Eve has the Cult of the Watchers design on his chest despite that happening like 12,000 years ago and wtf Taro?

The Drakengard timeline divulges from our own in the 9th century or so when a modern city appears out of nowhere in Spain and thats where magic comes from and everything.

That's the whole ending, though. The pieces are there for all this crap to just happen again. But maybe things will be different this time if we're allowed to learn from those mistakes instead of forgetting those lessons ever happened.

Hope springs eternal.

Bagoosh.

Well now nothing to do but wait until we figure out what's behind the sealed apologetic robot doors.

The secret Emil boss fight is one of my favorite moments from the game. It is pretty challenging too even on normal. Emil's va is amazing in this scene. Just heartbreaking. Emil's Sacrifice is my favorite song from Nier. I listen to that song on almost a weekly basis. It's a special song to me. So it was really amazing to hear a remix of it during this fight. "This eternal pain. The eternal pain." : ( I love you Emil.

The only reason I did not wipe my save is because I want to experience that battle.

After I do, then it can go.

I just thought of something. If support units were suppose to be killed if they came close to the truth why did the commander just up and give 9S the information? That was her entire job right, to keep that information safe?

bro i was just thinking this too

There were many things above her clearance, she only knew humans were gone.

There's a side quest that characterized the commander as secretly a softie. She also could have guessed what was coming if he had gotten that far and 2B hadn't taken care of it.

It's also worth noting that this scene happens after he noticed something off about the server and took his actions to prevent his and 2B's infection. So she could have already been gone.

Did you guys ever listen in on conversations going in the background on the bunker?

They are actually more than just noise.
One conversation I heard was between 2 androids about dieting. I was kinda surprised because it went on for quite a while. Not sure how i feel about Androids talking about waist lines but it was a fun conversation nonetheless.

Hate to keep harping on Drakengard but I got more thoughts on it. In the world of Drakengard God (gods) hates humanity so much they created things like the flower, dragons, and red eye disease to punish them. He hated that humans had evolved a sense of individuality. This is the same God in the world of Nier that if you made a pact with him when you had White Clorinatiion Syndrome you would become Legion otherwise you would turn to salt.

In Automata both machines and androids a want to desperately become human. They also evolve a sense of individuality. Does this anger God and so they punish them in an eternal cycle?

Not only that, both the Machines and the Androids have a figurative "god" to fight for - the Network and the humans respectively. The commander even references this directly, saying that she protects the lie about humanity because everyone "needs a god to fight for." It's a running theme throughout the entire game.

With a real capital-g God or without one, people work themselves into the same situations.

Speaking of this part, im pretty sure i remember that 9S decides to update 2B first, and pauses quite quickly when he hears the noise in the system.

That's likely why 2B became infected and probably why it took longer for her to start showing signs, she had only downloaded part of the update.

Here's how I saw it:

Its implied 2B has killed 9S quite a few times so far (even if she didn't, whatever) and I really do think the commander knows that 2B is 2E (again, a few characters actually seem to clue in on this early on (anemone, for example, realizes that 2B is modeled after A2)). 2E's objective is to kill 9S if he gets close to figuring shit out. 9S figures shit out away from 2B, and so when the commander realizes this, in can be thought that she still thinks 9S uploaded his data, thus that info is now already stored and they can't just kill him willy nilly.

So the commander just spills the beans, figuring its too annoying or tiring to just keep it a secret from someone who already has enough info to stage a coup

I really really love how the "become as gods" part of the game is pretty much an intro point for the player to clue in on these ideas. This game is a downright mastery of foreshadowing and concept introduction.

The commander definitely knows that 2B is 2E. When you are playing as A2 and getting hacked in the desert you hear some of 2B's memories, including the commander telling her she will "now go by 2B" implying that 2B wasn't her original name

This made me realize that both machines and androids "God" is dead. Very Nietzsche.
