Ninja Gaiden 4 Releases October 21, 2025

Googled re: what happened to Tomonobu Itagaki, top result is a reddit thread calling him a sex pest and claiming he was never a good game designer. The internet sure is something these days.

I'm a little bit worried, there's no essence mechanic so we're back to NG3 ? Imo the minute to minute gameplay decisions of either absorbing the essence of a fallen foe to do a Ultimate Technique or keeping it as a ressource (money or ninpo or health) is what made NG great.

Can't speak for NG2, which I am no expert on, but in NG1 I pretty much never make that calculation in my head lol. Doesn't matter if I am playing Black or Sigma. Doesn't matter if I am playing on Normal or on MN. Upgrades are never expensive enough for me to have to worry about that.

In NG1 UTs are often not even necessarily the most effective move for a given situation so maybe that is why it hasn't come up for me. In 2, which I'm a noob on, I find myself just spamming them a lot more.

Watched up to the amazing air juggle combo around 50 seconds and closed the video.

I don't need to see a single thing more. Day one deluxe.

That combo was sooooooo sick. 😩
I'd watch up to 3:20. The new guy has some air shit I've never seen where he hangs in the air and can do projectile thrusts or flying swallow. Its wild.

Air juggling is definitely new to NG, more of a DMC thing. As long as the enemies are as aggressive and brutal as they used to be I'm down. Basically just make it a way to style instead of always Izuna Drop.

Also shoutout to the sound designers. These slashes sound visceral. Going to have to play this with headphones.

I love DMC and NG equally so I'm a kid at a candy store here.

No more watching. I want to keep surprises and hype.

something looks off....

your attack animations seems too drawn out.

levels are wider, enemies are not coming at you faster, there seems to be less need for preparing to dodge or parry or holding down block....

somethings feels off here

I've said it before and I'll say it again: this, unfortunately, looks more like NG3 than the earlier entries and I'm not sure how to feel about that.
I'm a huge Ninja Gaiden fan, but aside from the initial reveal, this new entry doesn't exactly inspire confidence...

The Xbros are lucky they get to play it "for free" via Game Pass (aka the best deal in gaming®), but dropping 70 Eurodollars on this? Yeah, I think I'll wait for some user reviews first. After the disaster that was NG2 Black, I'm not eager to get burned again.

I don't know if the new gameplay is on Normal or what, but i've seen them do a backflip into a charge and full screen obliteration. Seems way too easy to do for such damage, charge speed and range. If it's as good as it looked, everyone will be spamming it.

Itagaki was really good at solid gameplay and level design with very few gimmicks. He was probably the best game designer in the world at that kind of thing alongside Shinji Mikami until Miyazaki came along.

Platinum on the other hand are not known for good level design and their games have way too many gimmicks with flashy shallow mechanics. And that was with Kamiya and the older heads still there. I'm just not optimistic about this game.

The Itagaki games had weighty gameplay with solid level design. They also kept it somewhat grounded, the only way to go aerial was with a combo you had to commit to. NG2 was about killing enemies ASAP, you could delimb them in one or 2 strikes for a finisher.

I think this new game will obviously have more Platinum DNA, which is open combat rooms and less about actual level design, fights that are more drawn out with style. But maybe its still a better direction than what current TN would conjure up. NG3 was a piece of shit. At this point we should be happy NG4 at least exists.

Yeah, the levels look more like "arenas" in this. I'm sure I'll still enjoy it. It will be better than 3 no doubt but it definitely seems to be taking more influence from other character action games.

Around 5 min in Ryu can do air lift, x, x, aerial destruction, then flying swallow at a downward angle.

Niceeeeee.

I noticed that too…looks sick & a fun time!

Some fans are going to feel conflicted because they either hate Platinum or DMC style games or they want it to feel solely like Ninja Gaiden which it won't with Platinum DNA mixed in. It's a half and half child born from two different action game makers.
I personally love both, so I'll love their baby.

Boobs alert

Challenge mode
Optional small quests to pick up at shops
Criticizes the level design, basic, boxy looking. Voice acting and story so far not great.
Combat is the star of the show. Timed block parry, timed block dodge with slo mo added.

Blood mode (Yakumo) or Gleam mode (Ryu) is activated by holding LT to use slower, more powerful attacks that have guard break properties, or can be used as an attack interrupt for unblockable enemy attacks sort of like Nioh 2 demon counter.

More environmental interaction at grapple points, flying drones, augments flying swallow.

You can tell in the footage the IGN dude is good. Especially on the boss. Looks sick as fuck.

Been reading info and it seems Yakumo is main character and Ryu is a side character or supporting Protagonist.

Yakumo has multiple weapons but Ryu supposedly only uses Dragon Sword. I guess Ryu is the Ayane/Rachel/Momiji of NG4. Sad.

Both characters can be used after completing the game in Chapter Challenge.

Gameplay looks good. Everything else sounds pretty bad.

No Ayane no buy.

The obstructive UI warnings for dodging and enemies doing powerful attacks are not my cup of tea but the gameplay seems tight otherwise. I sincerely hope that Ryu has more than the Dragon Sword and I have the option to ditch the Raven. I will probably play this in Japanese since voice acting is supposed to be obnoxious.

P.S. Not a fan of the NG3 slide and hopefully QTEs are not a thing.

It's a platinum game there will absolutely be QTEs lol.

It's looking like NG3 + Platinum Games the more I look at it.

I suppose if I can use Ryu the whole game by chapter challenge, I'll be ok with it but still I do need to know how many chapters total are there and how many Ryu has

Excited. The action genre is incredibly healthy, especially with the rise of Chinese developers in recent years. Both NG4 and Phantom Blade Zero look to be a return to form for fast paced hack and slash action games of the mid 2000's. I am looking forward to people calling NG4 a "Souls" game

10 years waiting and they turn our boy the dragon ninja into a side character with only one weapon

just...why?

Yakumo's design looks lame as hell.

But at least we can play as Ryu in all chapters through chapter select, and they're giving him more weapons after launch.

NOM: "Do you think that there are a good number of weapons in the game, and is there a chance for more in the future?"

HIRAYAMA:
"There's going to be a fourth weapon, for Yakumo, that will be revealed in the future so please, look forward to that. With regards to Ryu's weapons … We are planning to add additional weapons in, as DLC. The DLC is included as part of the Deluxe Edition … Additional weapons are included in that, with that said, that gameplay content isn't just limited to additional weapons. There's going to be more content. And we'll be revealing more details about what you can expect from that content in the future."

If they are going to charge extra I want to see Dabilahro and Nunchucks instead of Eclipse Scythe or Dual Katanas.

I'm hyped! Finally a break from soulslikes and we're getting a proper slasher. Looks awesome - non-stop action, blood spraying everywhere, and PlatinumGames back in top form. Combat looks super smooth and responsive. Not totally sold on the futuristic setting, but I've only seen the first hour

I'll lap up anything Team Ninja and I didn't even grow up with their games. I love all of their output as of late, even their meh releases.

So, just watched this.

Uh, I'll be honest, yeah, level design was never a strong suit of Team Ninja, but at least Ninja Gaiden 2 locations looked unique and cool, not to mention that they got a massive upgrade in the recently released UE5 NG2B. The level design in NG4 is even worse than in Nioh, cuz not only is it ugly af mish-mash of every modern action game with visual and design cliches like sci-fi and cyberpunk elements mixed together with anything but unique and straight up copied gameplay sections from GhostRunner, but there's also these comically large open boxes and parts of the levels which makes no sense whatsoever and it feels like they just did it for the sake of not dedicating any time to make camera work in more realistic levels.

I mean, c'mon, they didn't even bother blending different parts of the levels and visual design together like in this location with a lot of graffiti - they just slapped them on the walls randomly and called it a day. That'll do lol. So to summarize, visually, design and levels-wise the game is for sure straight up from the mid 2000s and it looks like it just with modern effects thrown in, but there's also low to high models pop-in lmao and performance is anything but 60 FPS on Fidelity. It's a MASSIVE downgrade in comparison to UE5 NG2B visually and level design-wise like it's not even funny. I guess it's their way to save cost of development and release the game faster, but cuz of all this and frankly bad and lazy decisions, the game simply doesn't have its own visual identity anymore and looks awful and generic as sin.

As for the story, well, heh, as if anyone was playing NG games for the story or for that matter watched movies with Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Lee etc. for this reason too. So yeah, the story was always just an excuse for everything else and doesn't need to be anything more. But I don't like the idea of letting us play as the new guy more than Ryu (challenge mode notwithstanding) and it looks like they went for MGS2 and DMC4 here by doing that. We'll see how it'll pay out but the idea of also getting new weapons for Ryu via paid DLC only can fuck right off immediately - they know that Ryu is the main star of the series and they want to capitalize on that and playing with your FOMO by taking away gameplay variety and make you pay for it, this if fuckin' unacceptable.

I'm not gonna lie, gameplay is the king, but to me and after NG3, it's just not a worthy trade off for the series to lose it's visual identity and more realistic level design completely. I guess everyone must decide for themselves whether it's a big deal for them or not, but to me it is cuz 99% of the time I'll be looking at this ugly, uninspired and generic mess.
