Ninja Gaiden II: The Official GAF Thread of Chaos

^^

Excellent points made. I'm surprised Mielke didn't review it, but I guess if the review was too favourable, he'd be accused of some sort of bias. But the thing is, he's the only hardcore gamer left over there :[

probably because of a game like God of War, no fiddling with the camera and very rarely does it cause problems. TN would rather show off their graphics rather than pull the camera back for gameplay purposes.

I don't mean to harp on the reviewer but this comment, "For those purposes, it excels; for less devoted action-adventure fans, it's more of a violent curiosity than something to get invested in.” makes it seem he shouldn't be reviewing this title if he isn't an action game fan. It's like saying the basis of the gameplay is great but if you don't like action games you won't like this; well no shit Sherlock..

yeah, these reviews are all screwed up, but it's to be expected...no fan of the series has reviewed it yet.

. The deep combat is as rhythmic and precise as ever, and it's visually reinvigorated with fountains of blood and endless amputations.

he completely missed a feature--amputations are not just a visual thing, they're part of the combat system. He doesn't come back and clear up this point.

For the rest of us, though, it's never been more evident that Ninja Gaiden is a purebred fighting series, shoehorned awkwardly into an action-adventure presentation.

Then he says it's a fighting game in an action game's clothing. I think you'd have to misunderstand fighting games and action games to say something so wrong. also, knocking the game because the spear gun takes no skill was quite ridiculous.

I can understand why non-fans would hate the game, just like with NG 1, but it sucks no one in the gaming media is a fan.

anyway, can't wait for the game to come out so I can stop reviewing reviews of it.

Don't worry, Mamesj likes to play the martyr bit for the Ninja Gaiden fans entirely too much.

Anyway, day one for the game regardless of how I felt about the prior one. I love these types of action games and I would rather support this then MGS4.

martyr is the wrong word. "fanboy" is what you were looking for.

Back in the day, game reviewers used to be specialists at playing games, that was the whole fucking point. There also just seems to be a lack of enthusiasm in a lot of these articles. Maybe the game is just too hardcore for these dudes :]

Nope, I'm getting so antsy that I finished off dragon sword and continued playing sigma to buy time. Course in sigma I made it up to the accursed "2 electric worms" boss in the aqueducts chapter. Screw alma and her floating beast tits , 2 giant worms are the hardest boss in that game.

Congratulations, everyone who harped on Ninja Gaiden's camera as though it was a game-breaking problem. Now the reviewers are listening to you.

Damn. :lol

Wow, is that for real? Whoever thought of that has to be a total asshole.

I hope you guys don't mind if I pop in here from time to time to ask some questions about NGB, on my first playthough at the start and already in need of advice. So I need to face a bunch of horsemen and I just beat them, but lost way too much health in the progress so I will reload (I have a bunch of potions but I'm hoarding them for when I get to a boss). I guess you need to use arrows, BUT: why the hell does the camera switch to 1st person when I just want to automatically shoot an arrow... I don't have time for aiming. I've noticed he sometimes does just auto-aim and shoots, but I don't know how to trigger that.

Also wasted a lot of time trying to get the running on water schtick down

Tapping B shoots an auto-aimed arrow. Holding it & moving the left stick goes into first person.

ok so tapping and not moving the stick does it? because I tried tapping and he still went into first person

There have been a ton of action games released since Ninja Gaiden XBox, so maybe people just expect a little more from their camera nowadays.

Because you moved the stick while you tapped it, that's the only way to go into first person.

Also there's no need to horde potions as you can only hold a certain amount if my memory serves me correctly.

That's how action games end.

With a boss rush.

This is CLASSIC game design.

Classic I tell you.

It sort of depends.

I know the water here is filled with piranhas, but really, Nick Suttner is a pretty good reviewer and I don't really think he's saying anything that hasn't been said before about NG2.

I don't think he ever says the game is too hard in the review.

I used Sigma in the example though, which was released in 2007.
So your saying it wasn't a problem less than a year ago but now its gamebreaking?

It's a B- because it only appeals to hardcore masochists. I mean lets face it, the game (if NG Black is any indication) absolutely punishes you for dying. A B- isn't a bad score, but NG is what it is: a no frills, hardcore action game with an absolutely awful art design.

Still, EGM gushed over the original. Go figure.

I don't give a shit about 1Up's review or anyone else's.

I'm talking game design.

Boss rush is CARVED IN STONE.

BOSS RUSHED AND LOVED IT.

Sometimes things need to evolve for the new generation. This is one of those times.

At least do something cool like make me fight all those bastards at once.

The worms are easy.

Trap yourself in a corner and time your charged Y attacks with the huge ass sword (Diahbro or something).

There are specific corners that the worms can never hit you.

in sigma or black, you get to fight three or two bosses at the same time in the mission mode.

Yeh, you're right. I guess the endless blood-letting, intensity and high-paced action just didn't impress him much. Sad, sad day for the hardcore indeed :[

Don't talk to me about this theory of evolution.

The boss rush is in the bible.

Look it up.

It did impress him. The text of his review indicates that without the game's great combat system (which he says received tons of "love"), it would be pretty terrible as an adventure game.

I don't know what a lot of people even look for in reviews besides gushing affirmation of what they were already sure of. Enjoy more GTA4 reviews if that's what you want.

from 1up.com
"The awful camera -- one of the worst I've dealt with in a 3D environment -- compounds those problems and unnecessarily complicates the combat. It drags along behind you like a wounded dog and wanders off on its own when you need it most."

So it's worse than NG, NG:B and NG:S? I thought journos already were saying the camera was better than the previous games.

Yeah, that stuff was cool and it wasnt even required. Making me refight the same damn boss at the end of the game is boring. Use your ability to mix shit up there instead of in the bonus section then. Then just have the boss rush normal as an extra. Simple stop and swap, baby.

I don't need a bible to tell me that fighting the boss battles again at the end must be required. I believe in choice! I'm a human being, damnit! My time has value!

It was weak in Devil May Cry to have to fight the same bosses over and over again, and it's weak that NG2 is doing it too. It's a weak tactic employed to artificially lengthen games... and it's another thing Japanese developers have to get their collective heads out of their asses over. That and the lack of mid mission save points.

Where has the majority of Japanese game design come since the 80s? Everything is covered in bloom and we're still doing boss rushes. Fuck off, Team Ninja, I'll wait till this is in the bargain bin.

tbh, while it was cool i thought it wasn't fun.

when they throw more than one boss at you, you will just be cheap and do wall flipping all the time.

I think he's referring to how you have to fight Hydracubus 3 times and Yotunfrau a second time before fighting Marbus.

That is mainly because they were bonuses and not optimized and all that. They were thrown together. If they took the idea of fighting multiple bosses at once and tweaked it, it could be way awesome. Like there can be a whole puzzle element to the fight where you can use one boss to help you fight the other while you are fighting both.

You fight the tentacle boss 3 times, the worms 3 times (flame = electric, but just a ring instead of a burst), and the ice fiend twice. Not defending the decision, but it was present in NG1.

i didn't think of it that way, interesting.

that big spider is probably replacing them here.
