Nintendo 3DS Japanese Launch Thread

In Manhattan, there are two Gamestops across the street from one another on 125th. (One of them was EB Games.) I'm thinking about waiting there for a 9:00 launch, and if I can't get a 3DS, I'll go to Nintendo World or Toys R Us, wherever Nintendo's doing the official launch at.

Sorry to ask again but have there be any additional reviews or extensive previews of Pilotwings, aside from Eurogamer. I must know if it's worth preordering.

Also, has any other publication or fan (other than engadget on launch day) posted high res pics of the black 3ds?

Thank you. I guess I'll take a shot on it. Never played any previous pilotwings so I'm not sure what to expect. Whether it's lazy flying around or if you race and dogfight with other planes too.

I've highlighted exactly what it will be. Don't expect anything else, or you'll be disappointed.

Pilotwings hasn't been released anywhere in the world yet, so nope, only Eurogamer.

nGamer in the UK have given it 75% - The gist of the review is that it's fun, but would be more appreciated as a £5 downloadable offering due to a lack of content.

No, it got a score in the 80s from what I remember. Which on N64 Mag/NGamer terms is 'very good'.

90% and above is 'exceptional'.

"NGamer's 75 review says the game is "beautiful to look at, very nice to play", however it's "disappointingly light on content". Despite this Pilotwings Resort is said to be "perfect for launch day, and maybe the day after" too."

If you like the idea of a casual flight sim based on taking off, landing, flying through rings, popping balloons, taking pictures, and stuff like that, and chilling out and seeing the sights, then you'll love it. That's going by the n64 version, this one doesn't seem to be all that different.

Personally I can't wait for this game, I loved the last one and it's been a really long time. No one else makes games like this really.

I really hope Pilotwings Resort will be on par with Pilotwings 64 as for the gold medal difficulty. Was so much fun back then. I'm worrying...

Cool. Thanks. I'll give it a shot. Nothing else from launch interests me in the slightest. :(

Would prefer if there was also a race and dogfight mode though. Seems like a waste to make a 3d flight game with what seem to be very arcadey controls and leave those out.

Ah right. Well. Trusted nGamer right back from issue one of N64 Magazine. One of the few magazines with reviews you could always 100% count on. Superb mag.

Hah. Well, not everyone is perfect.

Everything from the N64 era to when I stopped reading (NGC Mag's latter days) was absolutely spot on. I admit, I've not read any NGamer, but I know Martin Kitts is still there.

And in terms of lol-content, it was second only to the holy Digitizer on Teletext. Ah, Mr Biffo...memories...

good thing the Gamestop I put my pre-order in at just opened a few months ago and is right next to a much more well established Gamestop only, like, three minutes down the road. So hopefully that'll mitigate the lines. Of course, it's not listed as a 9am OR a midnight opening. It's a ghost Gamestop.

god i hate giving Gamestop money

No midnight for my store. They're opening the next day early and it's only for reservations. No pre-order, no 3DS for you! Also have Pilot Wings on reserve. Was hoping to get DoA at launch :(.

Same here, those lines are likely to be disastrous
Thankfully my sister works at the GS where I reserved mine so me and her get in early :D. Still have to wait till 9 to actually get the damn thing though :/

I was thinking (since I can't play this thing until the 27th, stupid America..), when will a hacker figure out how to rig a PS3 via HDMI to this thing so I can experience Blu-ray in 3D? I'm too cheap to buy a 3D TV, plus I want this non-glasses thing to kick off so I can get eye strain without the deal with it shades.

Uh, I'd say never. I don't think the 3DS has any input ports. The best bet would be to rip the blurays and put them on SD card for 3DS to play.

Does the 3DS even support DRM-free video playback from the SD card? Probably not before 3DS Homebrew.

$25? Do you mean tax? It's such bullshit that amazon gets away with not charging a sales tax so it's people have a huge incentive to buy from them. Amazon has enough advantage over retail stores as is not having to rent and maintain thousands of store fronts and employees at each one.

Amazon charges sales tax in NY. So, they don't get away with it everywhere.

I'm debating switching my preorder to a Gamestop that's farther away and in kind of a bad area. Decisions, decisions.

then you'll be mugged walking out of the Gamestop PLUS they'll take your sneakers and your complimentary Nintendo totebag that carries your DS games.

besides being mugged by the Gamestop store itself

Ive never been to a release day hype event, are the lines actually going to be crazy considering so far they have no plans for midnight or early openings? My gamestops not exactly in the middle of nowhere.

I know it depends on how many are sold/preordered, im just looking for a generalization so I know what time I should go.

depends on the platform and the store. i've been to stores that have two people in line, I've been to stores where I've waited in a line so long in snakes OUTSIDE the mall

Yeah, that's true. Looking at it from the perspective of someone who wants to pay as little as possible, it kinda makes me sad.

Newegg is so much better in New York. No tax, plus some of their warehouses are in the next-door New Jersey, so shipping is always next-day (unless it ships from California).

Sadly, I can't save the $25 in tax because Newegg isn't doing pre-orders, I guess.

My GameStop said it was opening at 9 for Pokémon...and they didn't which pissed me off. Another location is doing a Midnight launch, maybe I should just go there instead since the local store pulls bullshit all the time.

I'm gonna complain to GameStop and make them open my store for midnight launch...

Do you guys think Nintendo will have midnight launch events in the World Store or in the TS Toys'R'Us like they did with the Wii?

I already want to start planning what I'm going to do then.

100% chance.

I think he was asking where they will do it, not if they will do it.
Edit: Or maybe not, I don't know. English is a funny language.

Honestly, I think they will probably do it at Toys R Us, because Nintendo World is way too small. They can barely handle the launch of regular games like New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Oh, I assumed he meant if either of those places will have midnight launches, which of course they would.
It's a pretty big item.

gamestop is basically giving me a 3ds and four games for free thanks to the lawsuit dealy. also a buddy of mine runs the store and another friend of mine works there so there shall be zero shenanigans.

midnight opening. the store i worked at 3 years ago is a midnight opening too, which is kinda weird considering it's not really that busy.

I thought Pilotwings Resort would get docked for lack of content, but - assuming the paraphrase is correct - saying it should have been a £5 DD title is ridiculous.

Nah, he answered what I asked. I see how you could be confused, though. English is a funny language, haha.

Hopefully they'll have enough units.

Yep, the tax. Normally I would say screw it, I'll do it, but when that's a big chunk of actually buying another game and the fact that the games cost $40 instead of $30, it tells me to resist and wait just a few more days.

What's your 4th game gonna be. That's tough!

Well, for the Wii launch, they had enough units to last them the whole night and 1/2 of the next day. So I'm hoping it'll be similar for the 3DS, because I'm not doing the midnight thing.
