Another Ridge Racer video. Shitty environmental reflections on the car, but looks solid overall. Why doesn't anyone play RR with bumper cam like it's meant to be played? Still would really like framerate confirmation.

I guess this is still the best video overall (sorry, can't find a direct youtube link on my iPad):

Hey that's not bad. Looks like a Dreamcast game. Still looking forward to it. thanks.

I'm not sure what Amir0x's post had to do with strain caused by looking at different screens.

But you do realise that if you accept strain can be caused by losing and regaining focus on the 3D, then logically you must accept that strain can be caused by looking at the 2D screen and looking back again? Both are different contexts of the same effect - losing the 3D and refocusing on it.
you don't lose the 3d illusion when you look down at the touch screen, you just aren't staring directly at it. it will still appear to be in 3d. your brain doesn't have to rejuggle things because your eyes are still seeing an image each. it's when you lose that, and it resets to 'flat' on the top screen that you have the period of adjustment which takes effort and puts a bit of strain on your eyes.

Isn't 3D not supposed to be like full 3d, or half 3d, but more like you gotta put the right amount perfect for you. Full slider is gonna make it look worse for most people.

i find the bumper cam annoying when you're drifting. if you're driving a real car and you're drifting you'll be looking down the track to see when you need to come out of it, and if you have to avoid other cars etc, rather than staring at a wall three feet away.

That's a good point, but since when has RR been about driving a real car? :) definitely a matter of preference. I just love the sense of speed that bumper cam affords.

since when has it been about watching a wall slide sideways past you quickly?

if it *was* a more realistic game i'd be more inclined to use the bumper cam because you wouldn't be spending half your time drifting. i'm hoping 3D will increase the sense of speed usually lost by chase cam.

I don't think it's just about light reaching your eyes peripherally, but chiefly about your brain's point of focus in an image. And you will lose that when you're focusing on something else - be it another screen, or whatever. Refocusing should logically carry that 'context switch' you have when you lose the 3D for other reasons. But someone with a 3DS who has a concious knowledge of what it feels to 'lose the 3D' could confirm whether it happens when you look away to the touchscreen (while keeping the top screen in your peripheral vision), but I would guess logically it's the same.

I just noticed this, but.. being able to use the 3DS analog on Super Mario 64 DS might just convince me to 100% the game. Woohoo.

Yeah, but it isn't really analog. You still have to press Y to run. The analog stick just acts like a D-Pad.

Oh... oh such innocent, sunny days.

Yep. It was such a great photo.

Maybe the NGP will be able to deliver a similar launch.

I just played a random match, painless, flawless. But It's also Japan.

It worked fine over here from Cali when I jumped on. Really, it's all connection dependent.

We're gonna have to wait a good year before we see a rendition of this again. :p

unfortunately the jokes about the PSP battery life won't fly this time. between ridge racer and ditching optical media, you probably can't get in good loading time jokes either. and 3ds is already off to a big start. this is going to be a considerably less entertaining circus. save us, panasonic jungle. you're our only hope!

I bet that not a single media outlet will do a proper battery life test based on the best case scenario. If we get one, it'll be with everything on full blast and then they'll moan about how short it is.

Come on, someone please do a best-case test!

Looking at this vid of RR, I'm actually impressed, despite the lame menus.

I'm out of the loop in features and the technical jab, is it in 60 frames and does it have Wi-Fi (I may recall hearing that it doesn't, but I'm uncertain)?

Is there a site that covers all the details and impressions of the final games in people's hands?

but real life is 3D and so is lenticular cards how is this possible they're the same thing!

I'm just so glad Nintendo put in that slider. Worthless feature that 3D, especially when you combine it with the performance upgrades some games have or the fact that if you didn't utilize 3D the games would look better across the board.
I will be very, very interested in seeing how many people have the 3D turned off three or four months from now if it's proven to save battery life/improve performance.

that is interesting. but for sure when people show off the 3ds to family/friends/coworkers/etc..., 3D will be on. Riding a train from Mongolia to Vietnam not so much...

Unless there a game breaking problem with not using 3D, then yeah, why not save battery life until a revision or better battery.

But really. PSP2 vs. 3ds show a friend=wow factor. will always be in favor of Nintendo.
grafix only go so far on such small screens, and as game nerds we are the only people that would masterbate to pixels as is...

might sound retarded, but what do you guys use to see those cross eyed images?

Eyes :p.

You cross your eyes so the images split into three, and then focus on the image that appears in the middle. Essentially you're making your right eye focus on the left image, and your left eye focus on the right image. The third in the middle is the combined focus, and thus depth perception is born.

I dunno some people knock the NGP for being big I think its still a sexy slick machine
OLED screen is drool worthy I still think there are enough hardcore FPS fans who will see it as the thing to own. I will be the gamer's portable but like the Wii the 3DS may have everyone else and grandpa too on faceraiders

I still say Sony has a chance to take the win this time but they need to come out swinging no later than September in Japan or the 3DS lead will be too much

Chances are you could plug it in on that train. Heck, there are even electrical outlets on most long plane trips these days.

Not unless Nintendo catastrophically fails, no.
Nintendo has dozens of games that sell millions, tens of millions.
Sony does not have that kind of arsenal.

For those who haven't seen this before, I think that there is no doubt blue is not only the sexiest color, but it beats out the DSi as far as overall sexiness level goes:

Seriously look at that shit. I will be so early to Fred Meyer.

With this huge of a head-start and the hype surrounding the 3DS, Sony will need nothing short of a miracle to come out on top.

A miracle that I'm willing to bet will be taken out back and shot when they announce the price at E3.

Three questions for the GAFfers with 3DS units...

1) Standby Battery Life: Any idea how long the 3DS lasts in standby/pedometer/"StreetPass Exchange" mode? We are getting a good indication of active use time, but what about if you're just carrying it about?

2) Music Application: I'm fairly sure that all the application will do is play music, but is there any sort of indication it might be usable for things like playing/downloading RSS Podcasts or internet radio streams? Streams would be slightly more likely, but I'm not expecting either one at the moment.

3) DSiWare: Am I right in thinking that there is currently no access to the DSiWare Shop on the 3DS?

people have already posted that they have no problem doing this. i haven't seen anyone complaining of issues with it, and given that a number of games are using the touchscreen for input or important information we'd have heard by now if it was an issue i'm sure, just as we have heard of people having issues with tilting the system and losing the 3d that way and experiencing various eye strain and such.

Considering I'm buying like 5 games at launch, my website will have impressions. :s

I'm still a bit amused by the number of people posting about how they're waiting for the "3DSLite" . . . while I know that Nintendo, as of late, has been doing a new handheld revision every 2-3 years, I could see them sticking with the 3DS design for a good 5 this time.

yeah blue is very very sexy

well the it wont be as bad as PS3 trying to catch up to the Wii, if they have enough killer software they might do it.

the only real problem I see and this goes for the 3DS as well is that there are so many other little gaming devices out there with these smartphones that getting huge handheld sales may not come as easy as it was for the DS lite, so playing catch up for Sony may become very hard indeed
