Don't know if this was posted, but regarding Nintendogs, someone on SomethingAwful is saying that not only does it allow you to put the dogs "in the real world" with the AR function, but you can also use the character cards to make the dogs wear accessories.

Beautiful. I only wish that the things from the AR cards had animations rather than just poses.

I'm curious if theres anything preventing people from scanning and printing the cards themselves.

Nintendo has printable replacement cards on their website.

Edit:

Can the cats not be brought into the world? =(

Also it should be trivial to print them poster-sized and have the dogs/characters in your living room life-sized.

Unless you've read some sort of statement implying this, I wouldn't be surprised if people just don't have cats in their games yet. The first one has to show up randomly after some short period of living with your dog - you don't pick your first cat, he picks you!

I wonder if Nintendo will put up new Stars in their 3DSware shop. the static character models is obviously just a development limitation. maybe they will offer more characters that can move?

They're static by design, the intent is just to take a 3D picture with them posed a certain way. They'd most likely be able to move normally if you could take video, but as it is it's easier for Nintendo to not have to program a little game engine to accommodate them.

What about the online modes? Apparently, it's very complete. On-par with the consoles version.
Yeah, the game in basically all aspects, even online, is the console version of SSFIV in your pocket. Getting into matches is painless.

Has anyone got their hands on both the black and blue 3DS? If so, which color do you prefer? I still can't decide.

I love the blue one day, and then I hate it the next. I don't want to go for the safe color, but I don't want to regret the blue, either. I just wish there was some way I could see it in person before it releases in the US. :(

I'd like to see someone try it. Here is an invizimals youtube video of someone making a super-sized 'trap card'. Okay, it's a stupid video... You scan the card, enlarge it, and print it...Magic! But it does show that the characters increase in size as you increase the card size. Okay, somebody has to make a gigantic Nintendog. I would like to see a French Bulldog the size of a pony.

I'm exactly in the same boat.

Well it seems like most people like the blue more than they thought they would when they see it in person. Sometimes it looks great in vids (like the 1UP unboxing), other times it looks shitty, like that engadget photo. I think you'd be okay with blue.

The cat AI is so good that if you try to make it do anything, it won't listen. Instead it will sit around and do nothing. And if you don't lavish it will attention 24/7, it's game over.

If the blue version wasn't two toned I'd be all over it.

Cats are the best. Real cats, that is, not a pathetic A.I. cat in some virtual pet. We all know this is the truth. Fuck dogs.*

Now that's something I can agree with you on.

Yeah, if it wasn't for the two-tone scheme and how inconsistent the color seems to appear in videos/pictures, this wouldn't be so damn hard.

Maybe I should just get both. $_$

I hope to Satan that when the revision rolls around, there will be some interesting colors... (I'm craving orange or purple. Don't know why. I always get black.)

So...any Layton impressions?

Right so in this game you play a series of brain teasers which are remarkably similar to all the Layton games that have come prior. In the process you watch the occasional really sweet cutscene with the beautiful art style and you experience a story that makes no sense.

Great work. This is now a Dogs vs. Cats thread.

Just as every other thread on GAF is.

I knew someone would would respond with something similar to that.
To be more specific, did the art style make a decent transition to 3D models? Does it work well with the stereoscopic 3D?

The reviews agree. It's Layton with some unnecessary 3D in it.

See it in action

As for 3D, imagine it looks like the above. Now take one of IGN's screen shots and then put them both side by side, and do the cross eye thing. Voila

From the trailer alone you can see that there's some 3d (polygonal, not stereo) action gameplay sequences uncommon to the Layton series. Some impressions of that without the snark would be great.

FUCK DOGS NO ASTERISK

I just didn't want to go all out because there are one or two breeds of dogs that are super swell.

Unfortunately since they only exist because mankind horribly bred them into a kind, gentle dog breed with horrifying genetic defects that cause lifelong health problems, even they are not untainted by the inferiority of dogs

Even they are just glorified puzzle sequences.

I have a dog that was raised with cats. So he has cat-like behavior (climbing trees, playing with toys on his back, and stuff like that), but he's also got this awesome bipolar personality that makes him extremely hyper and playful or sweet and calm (and you can literally calm him down immediately no matter how hyper he is).

Amir0x, if you find yourself enjoying paper mario more with 3d on than 3d off, would you tell us, or continue to hate on 3d?

I'm always honest. If I find I liked something before that I said I would not like, I'll post it on GAF and even serve myself the crow. It's happened like twice before. It's only rare because I'm intimately familiar with my likes and dislikes, so it's hard to fool myself.

I just think it's highly unlikely. Also, I'd have to use 3D in Paper Mario 3DS and I don't know why I'd switch it on in the first place. Like I said, I was going to turn 3D off from the start. I had no intention of ever even turning it on once lol

Awww, come on man! You have to at least try it! You are too funny, dude.

I think some things will benefit from the 3D, especially 2D games like Paper Mario as well as the AR stuff.
But not every game has to have it on.

Face Raiders looks surprisingly nuanced. Enemies shooting projectiles? Phasing out of subspace? Blindsiding you? Morphing into multi-form bosses? I'm not sure Joe Wii Sports will be able to handle the Robotron-ness.

But I'm impressed. Is this another freebie built into the system, separate from AR Games? Seems like there's quite a bit baked into the 3DS alone.

Yup.
It's actually separate from the 6 AR games but still built in.

Finally tried the AR card games just now.

When my table first opened up and deformed in front of my eyes in 3D, it was amazing. I have to admit it's a very cool trick.

Then I played all the games, which involve moving around a lot while still being able to hold your 3DS in place so you do not disturb the 3D illusion. For instance, to aim your pool cue, you do so with the gyroscope.

There's practically zero playability with these minigames except the opportunity to show non-believers how the 3DS looks in action.

All in all I played for about 15 minutes, probably less. Now feeling slightly more nauseous than I did before playing.

Yeah, 3D gaming isn't going to be something physically sustainable for the long haul (like an RPG).

Are you talking about yourself or in general? so many others have said this, but the 3d gives me no problems. I wonder what the difference is for people, do you get motion sickness etc other times?

Of course I'm talking about myself.

And no, I do not get motion sickness with videogames in general. FPS is my favorite genre.

I should also add I watch 3D movies just fine too. Is 3DS the same tech as what they employ in theaters?

For people who are having eye strain/motion sickness, are you just switching the 3d between max and off? I'm pretty sure the slider doesn't make the effect stronger, it adjusts the focus because everyone's eyes are a little different.

The Virtual Boy had a 3D focus adjuster too, and if it wasn't adjusted to you then the effect was a lot worse on your eyes.
