Perhaps you'd be so kind as to verify the region lock (as if we didn't know already).

From the eurogamer review :

We can confirm that the software is locked by region; inserting one of our Japanese 3DS games into our European machine produces no result at all – it's as if no card has been inserted. This remains a deeply disappointing decision for handheld devices which will be taking a lot of long-haul flights. (However, our European and Japanese 3DS consoles were able to swap data via StreetPass.)

We don't know why he keeps buying PAL, either.

Aussie copy of Pokemon White (review copy) shows in the menu and boots fine.

Aussie DS game boots (obviously)

I haven't any Aussie 3DS games yet, and I don't have any other region locked DSi games here at work. I'm not surprised it worked, the Australian version of White worked in my Japanese DSi. However my Japanese Black did not work in my Aussie DSi. Weird, it's locked one way and not the other.

Re: The cost, it was just over $400, but I went for crazy fast shipping.

Note, haven't tested any other 'region locked' games.

Well Nintendo's official excuse for region locking is that it's due to the differences in ratings that games get across the different regions therefore breaking parental control. Could it be that it's possible for devs to stick the regional rating data of other previously rated regions in their games to alleviate the region lock? That would certainly fit your story and would make Nintendo's excuse less bullshitty.

I seriously am gonna start avoiding this thread. Every time I visit it, it reminds me how long the wait is :/ maybe it will go faster if I stop coming =p

At least Pokemon is only 6ish days away.

It will.

I have avoided music sites and other sites for a while and albums just come out of nowhere when I least expect them to, time flies by when you aren't here or on other sites of interest that involve waiting for things.

With that said, yeah, not going to happen...

I want to see a Japanese game working for another region but we have to wait at least a month for that

I may just end up dishing out the cash for a Japanese unit

Inside of a case... but it's Ridge Racer :p

Ah awesome! I was thinking for some reason that they would put an extra slot above the 3DS cart to store a regular DS carts just like the DS did with GBA games.

Region locking is all about preventing price arbitrage and preventing imports from cannibalising sales of localised titles - end of story.

With Pokemon, the JP version can't be played elsewhere because it releases in Japan a whole six months before anyone else. This means they can control the marketing of the localised version elsewhere. The US version can be played in Japan because by the time it arrives, it's just a translation of a six month old game.

I think it's just Pokemon White, other AU DSi enhanced games don't work in my Japanese DSi. This one does.

This also prevents people from buying Gundam, Ouendan, etc. type games that don't get localized.

I'd much rather import a 3DS game and play it on my NA console, but if the only other alternative is buying a JP console and importing the games, I'd probably just wait for R4 3DS. In this respect all they're doing is losing money that I would have gladly paid to begin with.

I'm a little saddened that 3DS carts will almost certainly not fit in my HORI Game Card Case 16, even if I tried to file it down.

blah I was hoping they left that up to the publishers to decide to block it or not

oh well I'll wait for a really unique 3DS color to come out in Japan and get one of those
no chance in ever trying crazy Japan only games like Love Plus without it

Whoa, you mean I can play US Pokemon White in my Japanese DSi and don't have to suffer through my fatty?

Hmm, does that mean Pokemon runs in DS mode on the 3DS and doesn't use the enhanced DSi features?

I wonder if a full DSi game works on the 3DS.

I'm still pretty surprised about Pokemon - it's admittedly a worthless exception, but I didn't think there'd be any at all to DSi region locking.

I presume it's primarily PAL publishers and retailers that are to blame for convincing Nintendo to implement region locking. After all, they have the most to lose in software sales from importation, considering all the English-language titles that are released in NA months before their PAL counterparts or only in NA.

There are, of course, Americans who import Japanese games and Japanese gamers who import Western titles, but those audiences have to be relatively niche by comparison due to the language barrier alone; I don't buy that imports of the JP version of a text-heavy game like Pokemon B&W would ever pose any significant threat to sales of the localized version. And of course, there are only a handful of PAL-exclusive English releases that any American would ever want to import.

How's it look on it?

Very awesome, the 1:1 pixel mode is so tiny like a Micro.

Well, the Aussie version isn't locked but it looks like you can :)

This would suck. :(

From what I can tell it's running in DSi mode, it's using my WPA signal on the C-Gear and the WFC settings says to edit the settings in the Settings Menu on the System, it doesn't come up with the typical WFC settings you get in a DS game.

No it runs in DSi mode, I even remember something from Nintendo saying that if you played Pokemon black/white on your 3DS it would still retain all its DSi functions.

Though it is completely possible I'm imagining that that was actually said. But even then I would go out on a limb and say it retains full DSi functions.

Soo, no blur when upscaled? Haven't been keeping up 100% with this thread and that issue specifically.

REALLY starting to enjoy SSFIV now. :)

Never really played the console versions much beyond social events and parties.

Love the fact that I can have a full-featured SF4 that looks great on the go.

It's a really great port.
