Nintendo announce mystery playtest for 10/10

The GC dream is dead. Seems to be a new game.

Kind of Death Stranding-like, maybe? Is this the second 'strand-type game'? You did it, Kojima!

Looks nothing like stranding at all, i don't see no boring ass delivery jobs. This looks more like minecraft in space, the idea seems interesting if you can only build inside your bubble till the entire planet is taken up by everyones bubbles it would look like building chaos by the end of it. What i want to know is once a planet is maxxed out with builders what happens if you expand the size of your bubble? surely your bubble would then overlap onto someone next to you meaning you could build in their space or would the entire amount of bubbles around you sort of move apart to take advantage of the space change.

oh well so never missed out on much buy not getting in lol will give it a look if they put a demo out but not really my type of game. i have no time to be sitting building things not enough hours in the day for that but good for people that are into this style of game. maybe the characters are just placeholders and its all nintendo characters that you control and they are just keeping it hush incase of leaks. it does look like strange game to be asking people to test it deffo doesn't scream nintendo ip or something that really needs to be kept on the hush.

The artstyle isn't very Nintendo looking... is this made in-house, do we know the studio developing it?
I don't think so, but I guess more will be known once the playtest actually starts (?).

For all we know everything we're seeing could be placeholder stuff etc. as Nintendo surely knew this would "leak" instantly.

There is a leak out there already. It seems for a forthcoming service game.

The mythical "Third Pillar"

Chasing that Minecraft, Roblox money. Evergreen as hell.

It would appear Nintendo chasing that sweet service cash just like everyone else.

Better in a third pillar than in Legend of Zelda tbh.

This is out there too, but blocked for me at work.

These characters definitely seems like could be placeholder, or maybe they are chasing the Roblox crowd. I think is interesting especially because I'd never have imagined something so heavily online oriented could have been developed by Nintendo someday.

This sounds like an Alpha or Beta test for a social or streetpass like functionality. A sort of metagame like previous social Nintendo services.

The UGC section reminds me of Splatoon graffiti but possibly on a greater scale.

A lot of ideas here are very much in line with Nintendo's philosophy: notice that players are essentially rewarded for their engagement by having more influence on the world, and on other players.

This can be seen in:
  • Developer Points
  • Connex Points
  • The height of your beacon influencing its size (which probably means it will be a greater challenge to place your beacon higher in the world).
  • There may be a UGC economy
All of these appear to reward the player's engagement by increasing their influence on shaping the world and the social network.

I am going to guess that some of the world's content (as well as some of the UGC) will be related to other games the player has played on their system. If true, then this world structure could serve as a more interactive version of current player logs, player icons/badges, friend lists, etc.

In other words, this may inherit certain ideas from miiverse.
If so, it also makes sense to launch on Switch at this time, so that a year or more from now, Switch players will be able to see what Switch 2 players are playing, thus motivating them to upgrade and facilitating a smoother transition between generations.

It could be one of Nintendo's attempts to improve user retention between consecutive devices, which we know is a problem they are very concerned with.

100% just a testing ground this isn't an alpha version or beta otherwise Ninjas would be at your doors already. They just dressed it up as some mash up. Could be some core gameplay loops being tested however.

I expect we will see the fruits of this in a few years

Another option is that this is a test for a future Animal Crossing. The structure described in the document seems to lend itself the most to that franchise.

From the screenshots it looks like your beacon is that green cube with a smaller blue cube and red sphere on top of it. And you can see in the screenshots that players can carry their beacons around (and even misplace them, according to the text!) so overlapping beacon zones should be something that comes up very early in the game.

A partial solution to this is not allowing the player to "plant" their beacon inside another player's zone. But this doesn't answer your original question about overlapping zones.

What I want to know is how the players' "tails" relate to all this?
The tail seems to be some kind of indicator of your level, for others to see, and it looks like you use it to pick up objects in the world. But then there are also objects - like the beacon - that are carried with your hands.

I totally see a free online world built-in in every Switch 2 (and as optional download for Switch 1) kind of the Mii concept but expanded to a game.

Anything GameCube onwards will not be in a Nintendo Online Virtual Console type sub.

The games are too big/to easy to make HD to not sell a quick remaster for $60 and sell a million+ copies.

People were delusional to think this project was GC related .

Why sell a game once when you can have people paying monthly for a service? I mean with your logic why even is the trend of SaaS existing today? Companies likes predictable long term income.

They can't remake everything. GameCube has 651 games.

How many classics are actually left on GC that haven't been ported or remade?

Melee
Double Dash
F Zero
Viewtiful Joe
Killer 7
Wave Race
Soul Calibur II
Rogue Leader
maybe Star Fox
...

And most of those are not up to Nintendo. Makes me think there will be a minimal offering of GC games for basic subscribers, with Wii games saved for the higher tier.

Super Mario 64 being being part of 3D All Stars didn't stop it from also existing on NSO.

also, Luigis Mansion, Eternal Darkness. I think that list would be quite enough.
