Nintendo confirms Switch backcompat for next gen device.

"Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch."
because?
"Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch"

Hey guys why can't Nintendo just announce the Switch 2 reveal date to the public? Nintendo knows when they will reveal the S2 but it is keeping it a secret. If the reveal is next year 2025 just tell us what month and date for that the reveal. You can keep your holiday sales for this year.

Nintendo is acting like the S2 will be the world top gaming console and the reveal will not happen unless they get ready to reveal it. Top secret gaming console of Guinness World Records.

They haven't confirmed physical compatibility yet though. Now I would think physical Switch 1 copies would be supported, but there is no guarantee until Nintendo confirms.

there is absolutely zero reason for them to change the form factor of the cartridges (other than the obligatory lock-out tab that prevents them from fitting into a Switch 1)

so it will absolutely be compatible with physical games too. it would be absolutely fucking stupid if not

Looking forward to the "Switch 1 is holding Switch 2 back" posts of the future

This news is so good election coverage can't get me down. Nintendo is really looking out for America tonight.
That's about all we are going to have looking over America at the beginning of next year apparently. I'll leave it there, because I know we aren't supposed to discuss politics here. Yay Nintendo!

A move like that would actually need them to sit down and agree to be willingly stupid. The only reason to remove physical media in consoles like PS5 or Xbox is the drive is large, complicated and has a fairly substantial fixed manufacturing cost.
The card reader in a switch cannot be compared to a disk drive.
Even making a Lite unit the card reader wouldn't gain them any significant space.

I could only see them ditching it if in 5 years the market purchasing habits totally shifts on Nintendo hardware to be overwhelmingly digital.

Nice still the same form factor. They probable gonna make it a little different, like DS to 3DS

not just that. it would be a completely unnecessary way to get bad press ahead of launch, when Nintendo absolutely know by now that any generational jump for them can result in a massive disaster, no matter how popular the predecessor was.

so, I feel like Nintendo will play it saver than they ever have before with this.
the Switch 2 will be a Switch, with every feature present, but just 8~10x as powerful... and maybe with a new gimmick added that isn't intrusive but can get people hyped. similar to the Dualsense's triggers, or Sixaxis back in the day.

Come on…let's be real.

We are just going to buy switch 2 games and not open those…

sir, I can't even fill 1/8th of one of those totes lol

My Switch collection is very limited as so many Nintendo IP I no longer play, I'm at the point where I literally just play random RPGs on there and only Luigi's mansion, Xenoblade series and Animal Crossing get love from me regarding Nintendo's IPs

Most of my collection is 3rd party JRPGs

You good sir are smart, where as I am a moron with totes full of games that I will never play and will never do anything with!

It will be interesting how they support BC. Hoping for physical support for switch and switch 2...it would be a major dagger if switch 1 was both physical/digital BC but switch 2 games were digital only (or flipped the other way).

The NSO thing is like, obviously that all carries over, intact. They've been saying that's the plan for years, how important it is. And to just keep it growing. That was always the whole point of NSO, to tie everything to Nintendo Accounts and bring with you to each new platform. No more starting over from scratch.

Nice to have official confirmation of BC. They had to do it, but nice to know. Hopefully 60fps patches for some of these big Switch games.

Even Nintendo wasn't going to screw that part up. The real question (other than when the damn thing comes out) is how the Switch 2 will improve Switch 1 game performance. Give me an incentive to revisit some of those games or check out the myriad stuff that seemed cool but just ran like garbage on Switch.

Expected, but still nice with solid confirmation. Now I just hope I can get one on day 1.

Looking forward to the "Switch 1 is holding Switch 2 back" posts of the future
Very much depends on how they handle things.. But if, say, Mario Kart 9 is a cross-gen game you'll definitely hear me complaining about it.

Would obviously be extremely disappointing to still be stuck on what is essentially WiiU hardware after waiting a decade for the next installment. Same with the next 3D Mario..

Hell yeah.

Sure, it's a no brainer, but you just never *really* know when it comes to Nintendo. Awesome to see their commitment here.

No worries, I still buy a ton of games that are still unopen in a like a mini-backlog lol With Switch, I simply buy what i actively play as I don't buy games for it often

because 30fps is shit and the Switch 2 will easily be able to run all Switch 1 games at 60fps. meaning the more games get patches the better.
I don't disagree with you here, but how many owners of this even care?

I think the mass majority of Switches community can't even tell you what their games are running at in terms of FPS tbh lol

I get why you would want it, shit I think that would be great, but this is Nintendo we are talking about lol That isn't some Mark Cerny type thing happening there and their general install base doesn't care about theses things to such a degree to do something like this, I would not be shocked if the games just run the same or slightly better

Nintendo and 3rd parties would absolutely profit from this tho.

Nintendo games especially are VERY long term sellers. meaning if Zelda gets a graphics and framerate patch, it will sell units, and it would be VERY little work for the devs to do that (Switch modders did it in a day or so, if not a handful of hours)

the same reason Ramasters are so popular amongst publishers applies here. very little work but free marketing to give older titles a sales boost.

suddenly paying near full price for those Nintendo games, that barley ever get price drops, seems less of an issue now that it's a 60fps game, running at a higher resolution and maybe slightly improved settings (better texture filtering would be basically free to add with literally a single line of code too for example)

How much will they charge for patches to make Switch games run better on Switch 2?

This is Nintendo, the cunts never miss an opportunity to monetise their old shit.

Hum, this plays more in favor of a weak hardware update than a consequent one. Especially as, announced like this, people's expectations are going to be a full 100% BC now.

This wasn't a given with Nintendo but it good to have Switch back compat confirmed because if the Switch successor hadn't been then I would not have bought one at all. The era of having to start a games library all over again with a new console generation is over and so it should be. I do not want to have to keep my old system (and games) when I can just have one that plays all the games.

However, unless the Switch successor launches with an OLED screen then I will definitely not be buying one at launch. There is no way I can ever go back to a washed out LCD screen after the Switch and Steam Deck OLED plus my TV and PC gaming monitors are OLED and QD-OLED respectively.

The only physical game I have for the Switch is Xenoblade 3, so I am not worried about physical backward compatibility. I have a backlog of 85 digital games on my Switch, so I highly doubt that I can finish them all before the release of the Switch 2. I can try, though.

Hmm, wondering if I should keep my switch 1 for any reason when I upgrade. I don't hoard stuff for no reason…
If the new Switch doesn't have an Oled screen that would be a big reason to keep your switch. You like indies and pixel art games? It's these types of games that look the best on the small screen Oled believe it or not ...

It would be an immediate downgrade on these types of non demanding games...games that look just as good on the switch as they will on the switch successor

Prepare for disappointment then. You should expect BC with 0 added feature/improvement.
Exactly ...look how long it took for Sony and MS to get 'most' of their Xbox one/ps4 exclusives updated on current gen ...still to this day many games never got patched...

If Sony and MS don't give fucks about BC then Nintendo certainly will not!

Keep Switch Online but for the love of God, at least give ur customers the OPTION of buying those games digitally Nintendo ..shitty anti gamer policy to arbitrarily withhold games to your subscription service

They will go fully digital and no carts will work only downloads :messenger_poop:
When Nintendo makes the inevitable move to digital only they'll finally have a shot at keeping their games locked onto their hardware.
They could easily create a system where users could back games up onto cartridges that look the same as regular carts but only work for the console that bought them. After buying and downloading a game the user buys the corresponding cart (at or near Nintendo's cost) and Nintendo drop ships it to them. User plugs the cart into the console and backs up an encrypted copy of the game from their on-console library to the cart. When completed it verifies the cart and erases the game from the console's storage. Users end up with the same cartridges that Nintendo's always used but they're locked to the console and won't work on anyone else's console. Ripping the carts will yield an encrypted blob that's useless to anyone else.
