I'm hoping they really start working through the N64 games this month. With the recent releases, the only non-N64 stuff I have waiting for upgrades are Chrono Trigger (which isn't happening because Square Enix) and Pulseman (which isn't happening because Sega).

Noitu Love is probably the only game I have interest in this month that we're aware about....assuming it comes out this month.

Meanwhile, I've got the 7th Dragon & MH Generations demos along with Boxboxboy & the HW Legends dlc to keep me busy.

I believe so. Animation is still smooth. Haven't played much of it back in the day, though. Will probably get it myself in the week.

Gurumin 3D is suppose to be "this summer", so guessing either this month or the next. Also heard it's confirmed for $15.

I played the PSP version a while back & it's the very definition of "okay". Maybe for $10, if they added in back some of the mechanics like they did with the Steam port, maybe I'd be willing to give it another shot.

Not to mention I feel like the challenge ramps up much quicker this time around, plus the challenge world opens up sooner as well.

.......of course, having the Bunny suit once again kind of makes things too easy, but not as easy compared to the first game.

Not to derail, but I want your guys' advice on something Nintendo-related.

When new Nintendo games come out, I get them through a friend's GCU because it's cheaper that way. Once the digital copy goes on sale, I buy the digital copy and then sell the physical, to declutter. Usually, it takes 1-2 weeks at absolute most to find eager buyers and a price point that is low but cool with me and represents a good deal for the buyer (i.e. sub-eBay/sub-Amazon prices).

I have never had as much trouble selling a game as I have Yoshi's Woolly World (physical copy). I've posted it across several sites. I personally prefer not to sell on eBay since I think the buyer and seller get bad deals often on the site. I've been listing it at $35 but on any B/S/T kind of thread I've been open to trades also. I'm honestly really confused why I've had so few bites. I've listed it here (primarily in the BST thread), on GameTZ, on CAG, and I think that's it but I've also offered it to a couple others when discussing game sales or other deals with them. I've been offering it for $35 including shipping and the game is like new; also I expect people to negotiate a little and end up with a slightly lower price.

Is the game cursed? Has our copy become sentient and decided to live under our TV forever? :/

Edit: if anyone is curious--I listed it on craigslist earlier today and suddenly have a bite. Hopefully I can sell this evening without an issue. Yay.

I know "Metroid" and "under-appreciated" don't usually go together in the same sentence but this game is definitely not appreciated enough. How the first game gets more praise than the clearly superior sequel is a wonder to me. Well, OK, I know why that is, but still.

Metroid 2 plays somewhat differently from the rest of the series. Instead of exploring a huge map, retreading your way after getting new items and power-ups to find previously unavailable passages, this game has a relatively more straight-forward map, which doesn't mean at all that there's no exploration. In order to advance, you must hunt down and kill the different kinds of Metroid in each area before before moving on to the next. A counter at the bottom of the screen lets you know how many Metroid you have left and seeing it slowly go down throughout the game until only 1 remains is very satisfactory. There are more Metroid types than in the other games, from the classic round thing to some really freaky and scary looking creatures. As expected, the atmosphere is superb and the extermination twist on the Metroid formula does wonders for the usual horror theme the series has going on. Things can get quite scary and tense, maybe more so than in the rest of the series. Sometimes just finding the discarded husk of a Metroid cadaver is enough to raise the tension in preparation for the incoming boss fight.

Most of the usual power-ups from the Metroid series can be found here, some of them for the first time: high jump, different suits, space jump, screw attack, missile expansions, bombs, jump ball, and so on, with the addition of the awesome sticky ball or whatever it is actually called (me and my friends called it the fried egg when we were kids). This one lets you stick to the walls and even the ceiling when in ball form, leading to some "interesting" exploration sessions.

To top things off, the graphics are great, particularly the Samus and different Metroid sprites. The music, by Ryoji Yoshitomi, who later worked on the Wario series, is just plain awesome if a bit scarce. If the song from the beginning doesn't get you itching to kick some Metroid ass, I'd check for a pulse, and the title screen music is downright beautiful. The whole final part of the game is particularly well done, with a great final boss and a nice ending sequence that leads directly to the Super Metroid intro.

If you like Metroid and haven't checked this game out, you owe it to yourself. All in all, it feels like a much modern game than Metroid that advanced the series towards the fan favorite, wonderful Super Metroid. Metroid 2 Return of Samus is also available on Virtual Console.

Metroid II is IMO a jewel, a masterpiece, and it's my favourite 2D Metroid game. It's a bold game that is more "Metroid" than any other game in the series, and is wholly unique.

See how 2D Metroid mazes are mostly composed of straight vertical and horizontal lines, long corridors and long shafts? Well, Metroid II throws that out of the windows in favour of weird, alien but natural-looking caves with convoluted surfaces, with crumbling, silted, millennia-old chozo ruins in the middle of them. That means this game is the Metroid game with the biggest sense of exploration and discovery, because the layout is always unexpected, unpredictable, fresh.

There is nothing straight, clean or modern in Metroid II, there is nothing suggesting any sentient being was there less than centuries ago. In a sense, it's the most "realistic" of the series, with little to none shiny SF elements. It's very lovecraftian.

The Game Boy limitations are exploited brilliantly. The sprites are big and detailed, which in turn makes the visible area around Samus small, but it works amazingly well for the game since it gives you the feeling to be able to only see a tiny luminous area around you, in the middle of infinite and hostile blackness forever devoid of sunlight, since everything is located underground, going deeper and deeper into the forgotten abysses. The soundtrack is pure genius, with strange sounds and melodies reminding you of "Forbidden Planet".

The theme of the game, finding and killing every Metroid, is chilling. Sinister clues can be found, the Metroids mutating into bigger and bigger, weirder and weirder monsters, leaving deformed shells behind. The game even plays with your nerves: you may cross an area and see nothing, then go back and see a shell, meaning that a Metroid just mutated there into an abomination for your to fight.

The whole game reminds you of the alien ship sequence in ALIEN. It's a marvel.

So why isn't it more liked? For the same reason it's a jewel of gameplay and level design: it's a maze game, a game that stands on your sense of orientation. It's much more fair than the original Metroid because the areas don't all look like each other, and there aren't cheap, invisible secret passages, but as said above, the layout is really, really convoluted, weird and big, you feel lost in the entire game, and of course there isn't an automap.
But here's the genius: you don't need a map. The game is complex, but the action always takes place in a reasonably sized area: the idea here is a main path is blocked by lava, when you kill enough Metroids, their queen/mother gets mad, moves, and causes a mini earthquake that lowers the lava, allowing you to continue (BTW, that means Fusion wasn't the first Metroid game to intelligently guide the player to accommodate to handheld gaming). That means you have to use your memory, brain and sense of deduction (not to mention platforming) to explore and find different powerups and Metroids without a map, but the goal is manageable, it's extremely well balanced, especially since the game gives you the tools to do it: the spider ball is here brilliantly used, the whole game revolves around it, and obviously the space jump plays here a much more important role that in any other game.

Unfortunately, nowadays, a game that requires a good sense of orientation and even stands on the ability to locate yourself and guess/deduce where unexplored area and hidden stuff are, is a game that is automatically labelled "archaic". People will immediately ramble about "remakes" and "automaps", without understanding that such decisions would miss what Metroid II is all about.

I agree with Katsuragi, if you've never completed a Metroid game because you find them difficult, don't buy Metroid II, it's one of the hardest/most "old school" in the series. Fusion would probably be the best one to try.

Yeah, don't let Metroid 2 be your introduction to the series. I found Fusion to be MUCH more accessible. Not to mention it actually has an in-game map & I prefer the layout of the stages more because it's not a huge maze, but rather smaller, split-up areas.

Actually I have Fusion on my 3ds(Ambassador here) and is the one I have played the most, let me see where I left off

Can you maybe share why the NA release takes longer? One would think the PAL one requires more work with the extra languages and multiple ratings (even with IARC)? Seen that with a few games recently and I'm curious. :)

In my case is not about the languages (both regions will have the same game), its just that
at the moment it seems longer the queue for submission in NOA than in NOE, thats all really.

With the IARC Nintendo gave a huge step foward. It was all really quick and simple to do for me, they were also really helpfull with it.

One very good reason: NOE Lotcheck is MUCH faster then NOA lotcheck.

My own upcoming game, Hot Rod Racer, is releasing July 21st. Got approved from NOE quick, like 2 weeks tops from submit->noe approval->ncl approval. Games take about a week to enter the testing phase for NOA (2 weeks for the busier seasons) compared to NOE where it enters testing after a day basically. It's crazy fast. My game is still in lotcheck for NOA, and won't be NCL approved till early this week in fact. (NOE version got approved like 3 weeks ago)

Should be noted, that for NOE extra languages isn't required. Only thing is required is to have the manual in French too (NOE only) and the submission docs (the descriptions/etc) in French (NOA & NOE).

Man, really glad I tried the demos for MH Generations & 7th Dragon.

MH Generations seems a bit faster, but I still don't like some the controls and stuff despite the fact it's meant to be faster compared to the other games. Just don't think I can get into the MH series, even with this game which I felt might've changed some things that would've made me get into it more.

7th Dragon does the same "1st person view & choose all of your party's actions before they're executed" thing in Etrian Odyssey (which I guess makes sense, same director or whoever that did that series did this), which I'm not a big fan of....though this Jet dude looks like he was ripped right out of Jet Set Radio, which is cool. At the very least, despite having random battles, it keeps the radar to let you know how soon you are to having a battle happen. I seem to be finding it more "alright" than I did with the EO demos, but after being on the fence about pre-ordering, I might hold off now.....maybe until a sale or something, especially since I've got TMS right now, then plan on making my next RPGs be FF15 & Persona 5.

Good thing I am still busy with Fire Emblem, ZTD and TMS#FE, so a quiet week won't phase me. I still want to catch up with some of last week's releases like Battle Cats, that Convenience Store simulator and that Sim Tower Defense game. Kinda said those smaller releases fly under the radar like that.
