Nintendo PlayStation...so, apparently someone has one.

There are definitely more units out there. We just have to hope the ones that were passed around have not yet been discarded. They'll come out with time.
I suppose you're right, but I wonder how few are actually out there. After all, this is the only time we've seen this particular version of the PlayStation since 1991. Though I hope that with as popular as this uncovering is, maybe those who have one but didn't understand it's significance and value might realize what they have and show theirs to the public as well.
20 years since we saw this publicly???
when was that?
i mean this was shown '91 at CES when sony/nintendo were doing something in the dark.

i thought this was the only time when it was shown in public...?
Sorry, I meant over 20 years ago. As far as I know, this was only shown at CES 1991.

I find it pretty difficult to find media from CES prior to the mid-90s. I think the Nintendo AVS was shown at CES as well, but I can't any media of it when it was there.

So... is the original version of Secret of Mana out there as well? with the SNES CD soundtrack and enhanced features and all?

I highly doubt it gets anywhere near there. There have been other unreleased consoles selling for 2000-3000. So while this could easily go for 5+, 500k is silly business.

I have offered to go down to Phili if I have to, not a big deal really. A couple hour drive, could stay at a friends. Im as in the know as anyone nowadays.

LOL 5K, Get The Flying Fuck Out Of Here. I would pay that personally, and I'm poor as dirt with no interest whatsoever in videogame collectables. There are so many stupidly rich people in the tech and videogame industry, and assuming this truly is the only one in existence, the sky's the limit on what it's worth. What if Notch or Palmer wants this?

Again, easily 5k plus on the worst of days. And also more realistic for museums. Emphasis on the plus. Whatever, I cant argue with people who wont read. My point being 500k sets unreasonable expectations that hurt preservation. But what do I know?

I doubt it was even shown to any media, which is why no photos of this configuration exist. Trust me, I went through gaming magazines with a fine-toothed comb when I was a teen. All I'd ever seen were crude renders and drawings.

This would have been a backroom demo for important retailers and developers to see.

iam sure, a prototype was shown officially at ces 1991, i read about it somewhere.
the prototype was shown to public, i dont know about the demos.

i was also soothing about the prototype snes cd thingy back then as a kid.

but i never saw anything real, only the two known things: the add-on and that one "nintendo playstation".

when i saw this today, i went hyper.

its incredibly next to impossible to find anything before 95. i mean no one went this professional. dont forget, nintendo is still considered to be a toys company (well, since amiibo they are it, again)

oh btw.

was the finger trap thingy, the vitality sensor (wii) ever shown in public?
its nothing new since this device was already invented years ago as well as being part of tetris 64(in japan only)
but would be nice to know.

but this is the biggest thing i have ever come across. i can die happily.

I hope this guy isn't stupid.
This thing needs to be studied by engineers before it could be sold to some rich guy, after that it really deserves to be put in a museum. I know i would pay 10€ just to look at this thing.
This is the history of vidogames made in plastic and silicon, the apple of discord between the two companies that essentially created this business...

...and it's in the hands on some random guy AAAARGH I'M SO JELLY!

That's nothing, on a forum people are trying to convince him to solder a power supply to a connector and then plug it in...

technically couldn't it be opened to see what it should take? i dont open my stuff but dont most have a wattage or something on the board?

Honestly with as much attention as this is getting... i would actually ask sony directly what power adapter he could use... im sure someone would respond.

Yeah you're right, I was misremembering. I think Sony announced their deal with Nintendo that CES, but nothing was actually publically shown or named. Although the design of this system is really well done, so I'm wondering if it was meant to be properly revealed in late '91 or '92.

who at sony would know about this?
like for real...

if you call the hotline,.... they would call you an idiot and thats it.

this is something huge. i would get in touch with peeps from assembler games forum and make the impossible happen:

-whats on the rom
-if there is a disc, whats on the disc
-is this a different snes or just a snes with a cd-add-on?(or maybe something like the n3ds so a little bit of extra juice in the system?)

man so many questions, and no answers.

please make it happen.

Guys, remember that the original 1992 vision of the PlayStation was super Nintendo hardware with a CD drive and sold and made by Sony but compatible with super Nintendo games.

So this basically would have been the sega cd but for the super Nintendo, and made by Sony.

Kind of like if the Philips cd-i had come out earlier with snes insides.

This will share little to no actual hardware with the PlayStation as it was released in 1994.

This probably has a snes motherboard inside with some additional ram for the CD drive and a reconfigured power supply.

Still this is truly one of the most incredible finds I can remember. This thing deserves to be in a museum, but some private collector will probably pay near a million for it and keep it private.

This thing has it all - unreleased, prototype, Sony/Nintendo, working, one of a kind, verifiable origin, early 90s hardware.

If I was a rich person I'd bid up to and past 750k to own it.

This is just bananas. Im kinda surprised how he knew about it for a couple years and just now says something though.

I just want to know whats on the cart and disc though.

no, this would be actually the JVC X’Eye so the sega mega drive and the mega cd in one-system.
Although there was a add-on planned for existing SNES systems I believe.

I suppose with the logo on this prototype's discussion tray, it might have been called the Super Disc? It definitely seems like a fitting name, and I can't think of what the name Super Disc might be for.

Had no idea there was never one seen in the wild or documented for history. Great find. Hope there is something on the cart and disc. Fingers crossed good folk get to have a look and help bring it back to life safely. Nice piece of history.

Also as to the value, no one can really say. While the number of people who would want this and have the ability to drop 100k on it is probably less than 50.

I can see people like Steve Lin, Randy pitchford, Palmer luckey, and others in the game industry in positions to drop large sums on a unique item like this.

Didn't Steve Lin pay some absurd amount for a early marketing flyer for the "AES" Version of the original Nintendo?

"Just" now? We already know he posted about having it a year ago on Reddit. No one believed him.

Not a collector type by any means but damn this is exciting. This shit has me more interested than anything at E3 tbh. Subbed like none other.

You know, this says something.

I'm not sure what it is...

Is it that this gen of consoles are crap? Perhaps. Who can be excited about laptop APU's?

Is it that we really love the SNES? That we wonder what CD games would have been on the SNES? Would they have been the same plus CD audio? Many more questions here.

I mean, people are already fond of the PS1. This wouldn't be a competitor to that...

What would we really gain? No additional CPU performance or graphical capabilities... just... more storage.

(I have my SNES hooked up in my oldest boy's room. Maybe I should go play through ALTTP.)

There's a lot that hits home about that phrase.... there's more to it than I can articulate.

while thinking of it, the first prototype maybe is fried so maybe the dad from that dude only took all the working stuff with him. i hope...

also iam sooooo excited about this. please let there be as much information as possible in the next few hours/days.
i want to visit that guy ㅠ.ㅠ
i want to clear out the dads attic. i am sure, we would find stuff, the world has never heard of.

maybe there is even the add-on itself(so without the snes which only needs to be inserted) existing.

i so much hope so....

So..........................................................let's ask the real question here, how much would this bad boy go for on eBay?

dude, this will clearly fetch more than 500k at least.

this is the holy grail of gaming. we didnt even know that they were manufactured until now.

if it works or not, THIS is the holy grail of gaming. nothing comes close.

fuck kizuna with 20k, family stadium and the nwc cart for 100k.

it wont fetch the price of that apple 2 though :(

Lol...

nwc cart gold is in 25-30k range, not even close to 100k.

This would sell for 75k with the right buyer

For some reason I totally read that in Shat's voice and rhythm with that punctuation spacing

there was one nwc cart going for 100k. i dont know why. but since seeing that one auction for 100k, seeing the apple I fetching nearly 1m, i would assume that this legendary piece will go for 500k. it has to.

this is the grand mother fucker, the only evidence of nintendos ecapade with sony and an add-on.

Wait. Did a finished version of that even exist?

never heard of that either.
only that it was in the making, but never heard of a "finished" existing version.
maybe its sitting at s-e's attic.
oh and i havent played the android version, but secret of mana for android is an enhanced port of the iOS port, so maybe the cd enhancements are already put into that?

i have another worry....

i suppose, the cart, which is a prototype, is only able to boot up a few times. maybe it has some sort of self-destruction/deletion thing built-in.

was that already possible back then? at least i read about that at the end of the 90ies....

Oh man, was reading this thread throughout the day at work. If this happened to me I'd pretty much be like "GAF, what the hell do I do?"

:p

:p

the only real address is assembler games forum. i really hope these folks can help out, dumb rom/cd, and get some other info about the motherboard....

My inner Indy Jones says that IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM!

I couldn't see something like that prototype just disappear into a collectors hands.

If the guy contact the Museum of Moving Image in NYC, I'm sure they would find a place for it.
