Feel free to give me the ticket. You know you want to...

Have fun!

Haha, I actually need to bring photo ID to collect the tickets, so unless you wanted to get a fake one made up you'd be out of luck anyway :p

I'm pretty hyped though, really want to see why this thing is like in the flesh!

Just looked it up and you're mostly correct. Vicarious Visions did the Wii version of Ultimate Alliance. Also Hexen released on N64 as well.
I forgot about VV on the Wii MUA games. Also Software Creations did Hexen 64.

Raven did do X-Men Legends 1-2 inhouse I believe though so I guess Gamecube was the one and only Nintendo system they worked on. :/

I don't think they have ever worked on a Nintendo platform. Saying that it might make sense to port Modern Warfare Remastered compared to Infinite Warfare.

I don't think Activision ever released Modern Warfare on standalone ? Maybe they'll make a Switch version in the same time as releasing standalone version of PS4/One/PC.

Yeah it'd be unusual for Raven to suddenly start working on Switch.

That could make sense. It makes more sense than releasing a late Infinite Warfare right about the time they're announcing the next COD(and have DLC coming out).

Probably something like this:

CPU: 5
GPU raw power: 1-2 (HH) / 3-4 (Console)
GPU Features: 10+
RAM for games: 6

And is the disparity between handheld and console GPU raw power justified just by going from 720p to 1080p? Seems like a lot of extra power for just a small bump in resolution. Hopefully this means also better framerates in console mode.

720p-1080p requires a bit more than 2x the amount of GPU power, IIRC.
There might be a bit more which could be used for better frame rate or other improvements but I imagine it's mostly for resolution.
I don't think handheld games will perform noticably worse though some might be sub res. Should look and play well on both versions

I don't want better performance in console mode. I don't want to feel like I'm getting a lesser experience when playing portable. Smaller screen and lower resolution is acceptable. Worse framerate and general performance is not. The key thing about the Switch is uncompromised console gaming on the go. Games running worse in portable mode goes against that.

So you'd rather it run worse in both modes than better in one?

Framerate and performance tends to hinge on CPU, which will be clocked the same in both modes. The main change will be resolution and perhaps some lighting/post processing depending on how hard devs push docked mode.

It's a x2.25 jump in resolution which is far from a small bump, to put it in context Ps4 has around 2x GPU power, extra memory bandwidth and some extra CPU and still somewhat chugs when doing the same kind of jump to the base 2k (also x2.25 pixels from 1080p) used for 4k reconstruction.

4k feeling isn't exactly impact free on resources, even if it's less demanding than native 4k. Lots of developers are putting GPU grunt to improving lighting, geometry and effects too and not simply bumping the resolution. And they're trying to improve performance too despite the tiny CPU bump.

Yeah. If UE4 presets are anything to go by, you could scale everything down for HH-mode to ensure that the frame rate is not an issue. One reason why the CPU doesn't change is to prevent cases where a dev can accidently break the game for one of the modes.

CoD is a lock. I can't even recall a Nintendo console without a CoD.
Crash would be the next logical step. I don't think it's even a timed exclusive, nothing has ever been stated concerning it.

Yeah I don't get the secrecy about the exclusivity status of Crash. Just say if it is or not, otherwise it feels like ports are certain, and personally I can't see any other system more likely to get Crash next than Switch. Not really certain about Xbox and certainly not PC since Crash has so far been a no-show on PC.

Funny enough, 360 got both Titans and Mind Over Mutant (got both in fact on there), but NOT PS3, ain't that odd?

Still, one thing is that Vicarious were always the Nintendo Crash team, since they were that very thing with the GBA games right after Naughty Dog left the series. Traveller's Tales did Wrath of Cortex but after that, Universal played hot potato with the series and passed the console entries from TT Games, to Vicarious (Nitro Kart), then to TT Oxford (Twinsanity), THEN to Radical (Tag Team Racing-onward).

Spyro was the same, almost exactly, since Digital Eclipse was like the Insomniac to Vicarious' Naughty Dog and took on the GBA games. On the console front they gave it first to Check Six and Equinox (can't even think of any other game from both) for Enter the Dragonfly, then to Eurocom (A Hero's Tail, awesome game BTW), then to Krome for the Legend series (and ELB for Dawn of the Dragon after Krome began it for some reason, but WORTH IT since it's so good!).

Then came Skylanders and the rest is history.

I always thought Activision wasted so many opportunities with both IPs where they could've gotten TT Games (prior to WB buying them) to make a new Crash game, or even port Twinsanity to Wii (Scarface got that honor), Eurocom never got to make another Spyro game (despite being close to Activision with Bond and some licensed games like Ice Age), and they had High Impact Games make a prototype of CTR 2010, canned it, when they could've had them make a new Spyro game, as HIG were formed by former Insomniac folks.

Yeesh.

I would rather every game be made with purely the portable mode in mind. I do not want games that run well in console mode and shit in portable mode.

So you want another device only supported by Nintendo. Gotcha.

It's time to face facts, the moment this was confirmed as a hybrid, a sacrifice was inevitable.

The vast majority of the third party support will be from portable developers though.

I don't mind docked mode having better lighting, shadows, etc. but the games better still look and, more importantly, perform well enough when portable.

Portable-specific game development is drying up, though, as can be evidenced by the 3DS' lineup stacked against the DS. That isn't going to miraculously get better.

Well the Switch could actually end up with better support than the 3DS from Japan by virtue of every other platform being some degree of a failure. Of course you would still be right because it will probably share games with PS4/Mobile/PC.

Oh that..

I don't know much about fp16 vs fp32, other than fp16 doubles gflops... There has to be a caveat for fp16
We can't just technically average fp16 and fp32 flops for all games, right? Is it based mostly on the engine? And does fp32 have any real advantages vs fp16?

I heard operations per pixel is higher with fp16, but image quality is sacrificed when comparing to fp32(which doesn't make sense to me since doesn't more gflops/operations = a bump in image quality..?).

Thanks Skittzo0413

Oh that..

Just how does that work exactly anyway..Is it based mostly on the engine? We can't just technically average fp16 and fp32 flops for all games, right? And does fp32 have any real advantages vs fp16?
It has to be set up. Some game engines, like UE4, are already designed to take full advantage of 2x FP16 due to its heavy use in mobile games.

No offense, but speak for yourself. I have no need for the portable experience, but would rather the console experience not be compromised. It's already bad that the handheld mode has to dictate what the hardware is like, I hope it also doesn't dictate what they can do with games and how well they run.

Likelihood of Dragon Quest Builders being a launch window title? It seems to me like it could be, assuming that it comes the Switch at all, which I think is a fairly safe bet.

SE said it was right for the audience without formally announcing it. I don't see DQXI making the first half of 2017 so maybe it's a good title they can port early.

Square is not known to do quick port jobs, unless it's for PC. Whatever they're doing for Switch they're either being developed for Switch alongside of other platforms, or they're brand new titles exclusive to Switch (my vote is for the latter).

Plus, DQ Builders is already on a portable device, there is no reason to port it. Maybe a sequel exclusive to Switch?

I hope they port over their other DQ games and also FFV. I'd definitely pick those up on the NS.

FFV = Final Fantasy 5? You mean Final Fantasy XV? :p

I'm still of the opinion that the #1 game SE should make sure releases on Switch is Kingdom Hearts 3. I would've thought Nintendo's relationship with Disney* would make that extremely likely.

*Games being Disney Art Academy (an official Nintendo crossover no less), and Disney Magical World 1 and 2, all on 3DS alone.

You forgot Kingdom Hearts 3DS! lol I really hope to see Kingdom Hearts on a Nintendo home console for the first time and 3 is a good number.

Oh. Yeah. XV, but also FFV. Aren't they doing a collection with all of the early FF games in it? I would like to get that as well. I want to play through FFV again since I have FFIII (just purchased on iOS) and FFIV which I recently dug out for my SNES. Battery seemed to still be working, too.

The ones I listed were all published by Nintendo in NA (and EU? Only Academy was Nintendo-published worldwide, Bandai Namco published the World games in JP). :)

That's just a rumor no? But another long lasting rumor if I recall was a Switch-specific (timed or actual exclusive) remake of Final Fantasy 6, I've seen a few over the years bring that up (not the most reliable, but I remember Verendus and Tenkay, and maybe elsewhere mentioning this).

Why 6 and not 5 since they stopped at 4 on DS though? Oh well, 6 seemed like the last classic-style FF before 7 "edged" it up I think. Also 6 was a SNES game, 7 was a PS1 game.

The Switch cant handle FFXV lol

I had hopes for Kingdom Hearts 3 because it will release much later,no open world and on UE4 but who knows, looks like a pretty demanding game.

I don't understand how you could be a hardcore gamer and just own a Nintendo console though. What about Last of Us, Uncharted, AAA games, fighting games, exclusives, etc? How could you not want to play those? I can understand if you are a hardcore Nintendo fan and only care about Nintendo games but if you want a complete gaming experience, you aren't getting it from Nintendo and have to own a PC, PS4 or XB1 as a companion system and that's my problem with their continued direction.

They should be gunning for #1 and the only system you need. You want GTA? It's here and runs better than the other consoles. I don't like them settling for 3rd or even 4th place but that's what they are doing.

If anything, Microsoft & Sony's biggest threat is PC gaming itself amongst hardcore gamers. PC gaming is already huge in places such as Europe, South Korea, Russia & China. Tons upon tons of 3rd party games (including Japanese 3rd party ones) are already hitting stores such as GOG, Humble Bundle & Steam even faster than last gen or the generations before that.

That's one of the reasons why they're bringing out PS4 Pro & Scorpio, to prevent people from fully jumping ship onto it.

And I don't understand how anyone could be "hardcore gamer" and completely trash talk any system (the only exception if and only if that system were badly design from a hardware perspective like system failing levels like RROD Xbox 360). A "hardcore gamer" wouldn't mind the "causal gamer" because a "hardcore gamer" would be happy that people are playing games period. A "hardcore gamer" wouldn't throw insults like "waggle gimmick" or "touchscreen gimmick" around. Even if the "hardcore gamer" didn't even like a certain games the "hardcore gamer" would be still be glad that people are partaking in the hobby. A "hardcore gamer" wouldn't be jumping for joy and hoping for Nintendo to fail so that Nintendo games can appear on a PS4 or Xbox or PC. A "hardcore" gamer would appreciate that platform differentiation.

Epic response.

I wonder how the Switch will handle notifications while on standby.

The Wii had that glorious blue light around the disc slot, the 3DS has a blue light, and the Wii U has a flashing blue light around the Home button and the Gamepad screen displaying content.

People don't seem to be taking Matt's info to heart. I get the feeling we're in for a surprise in 3 weeks.

I hope the Switch handles friend notifications better. We should be notified when friends are added and when we've gotten new messages.

Its ridiculous how the wii u went a step back from the wii(something so simple and easy to see on a daily calender, though you didn't know who emailed you from the wii channel screen by itself) vs being forced to go to miiverse to see and send messages instead of the friends list.. Not to mention, not even being able to see online friends without a 30 second load screen. ugh.
