Nintendo Switch | Hardware Review Thread

But what about variety for stuff unique to the system?

If you mean that PS4 and Xbox didn't have many exclusive games at launch then that's true. Don't think it mattered that much at the time because people were on their 6th/7th year of PS3 and 360, and what they got on PS4 and Xbox One at launch were a few exclusives as well as much better versions of multiplatform games compared to their last gen counterparts.

Battlefield 4 was a completely unplayable broken mess at launch. Cod ghosts is without a doubt the worst call of duty game released to date. And both madden and assassins creed were available on 360/PS3.

Both the PS4 and xb1 had horrible launches.
No they didn't, Now that people are critizing the switches lineup than you guys think that they had horrible launches but it doesn't make it the truth.

Both the lineups were pretty good for launch

Hold on.

Is there some big running joke about any flaw you point out in a Nintendo system means that Nintendo is doomed?

Why is that response so many of these guys are throwing out?

It's like the default response when you have nothing intelligent to add to the discussion.

The kickstand isn't made very well and snaps out of place with a little pressure?

Nintendo is doomed.

There is no VC?

Nintendo is doomed.

Any aspect of this device not absolutely perfectly in every way imaginable?

Nintendo is doomed.

Here are the scores since they're still missing form the OP:
IGN: 6.7/10
Attack of the Fanboy: 8/10
Engadget: 8.4/10
Telegraph: 8/10
The Guardian: 8/10
Enthusiast.gg: 9/10
MobileSyrup: 7.5/10
CGMag: 8.5/10
WeGotThisCovered: 8/10
PC Advisor: 8/10
IBtimes: 8/10
Wired: 5/10

They just shot themselves in the foot. Honor and shame etc etc.

Seems like decent scores, but as always, a lot of people are focusing on the negative only

I love my PS4 but I specifically waited because I thought the launch was garbage. So no, just because YOU say they were "pretty good" doesn't it make it truth either. Give me a break.

Nintendo is in a lot of trouble right now with their hardware. Follow me if you will...

1. Nintendo hasn't announced a solution for connectivity issue yet

so...

2. either they are scrambling for the major backup plan (recall/hardware replacement)

or

3. they are double confirming until last minute that a firmware update they have does fix it and they are still testing

BUT, if #3 was true...

they now missed the system review embargo date where if they announced yesterday they have a firmware fix, they could let reviewers test that fix and at least mention it in their reviews.

Which leads me to believe they DONT have a connectivity solution fix yet and they are in serious trouble

If you read the DF piece on the connectivity issue, it really doesn't sound like that big of a problem.

It is stupid. I had numerous issues with the Wii U when it launched and thought it'd sell far less than the Wii and wouldn't get almost any 3rd party support. All turned out to be true, but you'd have gotten the same sarcastic "Nintendo is doomed" reply even back then if you criticized the Wii U.

Well if you're not counting cross gen games, what's Switch left with? Snipperclips?
I'm saying that if we're GOING to count cross gen games then you have to count Zelda. Which has a very good chance of winning goty this year.

You couldn't say that about any major game release on the PS4/xb1 in 2013.

As other posters have already said, there are also many cross gen indie games being released on switch day one.

I already know all the things I can't do with it and obviously I can live with the shortcomings, but this device is far from acceptable in the state it's launching in.
You are contradicting yourself. No one is making you buy it. It isn't holding hostage some necessity. Heck, Zelda isn't even exclusive to it. Therefore, if you can live with it, it's acceptable. If the strength of your criticism is overblown by your own estimation, chances are it comes across that way to other people too.

If you want to play Zelda on it, are willing to wait for the other big announced games, care about its hybrid features, care about the indie lineup, etc. Switch comes across as a device with some hiccups that will probably be smoothed over. Then it is a perfectly fine purchase. Or wait it out for some more heavy hitters.

If you want it as a multi-purpose tablet, it is feature poor. I wouldn't suggest you buy it from what we know.

If you want it as a home console, it is not up to spec par, it has this joycon issue, which may or may not matter to you, won't have good AAA support, but looks to be starting strong as to Nintendo support this year. It is probably also a bit costly for a device intended as a purely stationary and purely secondary console. Then here also I wouldn't suggest you buy it unless the money spent and gathering dust don't bother you.

Of course some want it as all of these things. It is completely to be torn on the value or to see where it falters and where it's strong. But don't expect everyone to see, say, 2 and 3 as destroying the value of the device.

It's a defensive reflex post made by Nintendo fans on the forum. If they can't dispute any criticism leveled at Nintendo, they just post Nintendo Doomed, lol and move on in an attempt to paint you as a hysterical hater of Nintendo.

Some of the criticisms in your original list post were ridiculous and overblown so people made fun of you. It's a pretty clear cause and effect relationship.

As for the criticism of there's only Zelda have those people not been paying attention? There's tons coming out and that Nindie Direct yesterday just reinforced that. Perhaps people think that only AAA budget retail games count? I'd rather have Shovel Knight 2 and Owl Boy over Assassin's Creed Egypt and Call of Duty 14, but I guess that's me.

Unfortunately there's many that still feel that indie games "aren't real games" for whatever reason.

I think we know that this console is and was going to live and die by it's initial reception as well as 3rd party support (at least western). It could of had an i7 and GTX 1080 and the situation would have been the same.

If a console from Donald trump co. had an i7 and GTX 1080 at console like prices and 3rd party support everyone would buy it.

I think you misjudge allot people, hardware matters, most gamers just cant afford OR justify the cost of an I7 and 1080

Regarding the PS4 and Xbox One launches, they launched with Assassin's Creed, Fifa, Madden, CoD, Battlefield etc. Some of the biggest and popular franchises right now, sure not all of these games are my cup of tea but they are a lot of people's cup of tea. People might say they were also on the older consoles, which is true but they were released around the same time for most titles.

Also even if you bought a PS4/Xbox One on launch, you knew that down the road all the third parties will support both consoles and most new releases will end up on both, maybe an exclusive here and there, will Nintendo and Switch get most games and support from all the big third parties? Very uncertain IMO.

What you said in bold is absolutely true. But regardless of the quality, the games and support were there from the off. BF4 also eventually blossomed into a great game, but you're right about the games state at launch. Also, I guess it is worth remembering (in context) that BotW is releasing on Wii U as well.

So have Nintendo even acknowledged they are working on the sync issue?

Personally I will use switch purely as a handheld, but I would be very concerned if I were a TV user - especially since Zelda doesnt detect and pause if controller desyncs so I would paranoid all the time of it screwing me at any moment.

Shane on siftd.net said he can NEVER sync his left joycon at home, though could at his office.

Well, it may be because the Eshop isn't even up yet for reviewers.

Not quite what I meant. Judging by opinions I've read online, your average "gamer" tends to think that if your game is using pixel art it's somehow worth less. With most indie games going that route, lots of folks automatically think of indie games as inferior to your Calla Dooties and Assin' Creeds.

Which is weird considering I was playing Nintendo games a decade before some of these kids caught their first pokemon.

I do enjoy the idea that I'm a Nintendo hater though.

I'm so intrigued by the console but from what I've read I am very hesitant for day one adoption. The hardware complaints (joycon connectivity, grip charging, etc) seem like it's better to wait for some resolution or a hardware refresh in a couple years. The ambiguous future features (Netflix, Virtual Console, etc) are worrying. I can get my Zelda fix on my Wii U.

I have a preorder. Might be going back to the store (or we'll see how eBay prices fare...).

I have been thinking about this. I think the kickstand quality is deliberate. I haven't touched it myself, but if i had to guess it's made of a very soft rubbery plastic. based on my experiences with broken keyboard feet, the kickstand is made so that in the event it gets popped off, it's doesn't snap. Also if you do make the mistake of docking while it's out it'll give pretty easily and not damage anything. I think it's more of a fail safe than poor design.

Why not both? The criticism is those indie games are also on other platforms, along with big AAA games. Only indies or only AAA is bad, there should be a mix.

Very true lol. I wish would have worded it better. I meant to imply that people already made up their minds in specific to Nintendo. I felt that people already had their minds made up solely based on Nintendo's party 3rd party history (with consoles) and that regardless of specs people would have used this as a negative talking point. I hope i did better.

Those are valid criticisms. Some Nintendo fans here need to take off the shades and realize the system isn't perfect and is a disappointment in ways that really could have been avoided.
Look at this room full of Nintendo fans who claim the Switch is perfect.

At launch the PS4 had Battlefield 4, Madden, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed 4. All games that sell more than the typical Zelda title.
Yes and nothing says 'buy a new system' than yearly updates of longrunning franchises

I believe they issued a statement to Kotaku that said they were looking into things, but not much else. Which honestly makes it seem likely that they were unaware of the signal issues and don't have a fix yet.

They really do.

I think it's the generalization that's the main problem.

I mean, I'm as a big Nintendo fan as it gets, however I've been very critical of the Wii U and the Switch since both were announced.

The whole *insert company* fanboyz shit is silly as hell, honestly.

PS4 had no good third party games at launch

Call of duty Ghosts sold around 20 million. Just because maybe you dont value massive 3rd party AAA, thats not to say joe public has the same views. Ghosts was one of the first console 1080p60 games on Ps4, it was a big thing. It maybe not be trendy on GAF, but GAF is not the console market.

Very true lol. I wish would have worded it better. I meant to imply that people already made up their minds in specific to Nintendo. Fair point, maybe, but if you had a bust up with a mate its up to you to offer him a beer. Nintendo got 9 billion, they could have any game they wanted (IF they wanted). Thats the problem, they dont want it enough. Look at Phil Spencer Publicly going around Japan asking for support, Nintendo need to change.

The issue I have with the Switch is games like Mass Effect / destiny rank higher to me than any first party output, if I could play them mobile then its a done deal even as a secondary console. I wil wait a while, if Switch does not take off will get a gaming laptop.

Agreed. And it's very likely a 3rd party will sell sturdier replacements for anyone who wants one, since it's easily and intentionally removable.

Has anyone mentioned how the switch is going to look hooked up to a 4k tv? Is it going to look like shit?
Probably yeah, the UI for some reason doesn't scale, which is pretty bad. Aside from that, think 900p upscaled. So not very good.

I'm in the same boat. I'm 41 and grew up playing nothing but Nintendo. I'm still greatly hoping for Nintendo to kill it with the Switch, but just blind fanboyism just drives me nuts. I still love Nintendo, but I think they've got the wackiest fans around. I can't stand it when people won't accept valid criticism of something. Anyway, I've got my preorder from Best Buy and I'll enjoy it for what it is right now, a way to play Zelda, that doesn't mean I'm going to pretend it doesn't have significant issues.

But ports of years old indie games and crossgen games do?

Seriously, can we stop with this PS4/Xbox launch comparisons. Ya'll are just making yourself look silly.

Skimmed some of the highlighted excerpts and read the DF review. Consensus seems to be there's a lot of promise in this hardware and it remains to be seen how exactly it'll be utilized. I think if Nintendo can get a similar output in year one from third parties as they did in the Nindies showcase (basically every major publisher puts something out on the system) and if Nintendo can promise Mario and Xenoblade (on top of the early first party releases) PLUS some E3 announcements, a lot of the skepticism could die down. Very excited, personally.
