Nintendo: Wii U could become "preferred" Call of Duty platform

Oh god, why would anyone at Nintendo let alone a Marketing Executive say that!? Is this guy trying to doom the Wii U?

Because, it is a quote taken out of context.

This is his full response.

How are you planning to communicate to consumers that the Wii U is an entirely new system?

Well, it's confusing relative to the Wii. With motion control gaming, when you saw Mr. Iwata and Reggie stand up and swing a motion controller, it brought it to life immediately. With a second screen controller, you need to see what's on the second screen, so by nature it's a more complex system. It's less visually easy to understand. As for how we're planning to make it clear that it's a new system, well, we want to get it in people's hands. That's what E3 is all about and from now until launch. We want consumers to experience it for themselves, whether it's in a store, at a gaming event, or at a press event. Once they do that, I think people will really start to understand how the GamePad changes the way you can connect with games and other players.

Moffitt is not a game designer and he's not the person to think of uses for the GamePad. Are you seriously calling the DS a gimmick btw? Are you Jack Tretton and just arrived in a time machine from 2005?
So you used the title knowing it was misleading.

No. I simply used the headline that was included with the original source.

Eurogamer posted a Digital Foundry article detailing that the Wii U controller had a better response time than the TV it was connected to. Hardcore CoD players might want that extra split-second of reaction time and be able to play the game on the go around their house.

So yes, he's an idiot for suggesting a map on the controller would make the game better. But he might not be wrong about the Wii U becoming the platform of choice for Call of Duty. (he's probably wrong)

Gamer: Woo hoo i bought COD on my new system, the WiiU
Gamer: Puts COD in and tries to play online
WiiU: Enter friends code in here
Gamer: WTF, ok
Gamer: Hey COD body would you like to be friends
Gamer 2: Sure
Gamer: writes a messages to gamer 2 (let´s destroy the other players)
WiiU: You have to wait half an hour for your message to be approved.
Gamer2 is offline
Gamer: Fuck this shit
WiiU: Error, error, profanity found, cannot process it
WiiU commits Seppuku.

You literally know less about the WiiU than any other poster in this thread. Congratulations. It's quite the accomplishment

Oh man, this thread.

Can we go back to pre-E3 GAF already where topics didn't feel like a GameFAQs blast-from-the-past?

Anyway, this is a very valid point:
"The Wii U could become the preferred way to play those games for some of the core gamers."
If some developers put in the effort and distinguish core multi-platform games from the PS360 versions, I can definitely see multi-console owners buying the WiiU version instead. I know I would and many of GAF seem to share the same sentiment. Big if though, as I imagine a lot of Western developers will just shoe-horn in a map and some quick access buttons and call it a day.

Also, this Moffitt guy has to take a better approach in his interviews. CoD isn't exactly the best example to use and the last quote is a bit... baffling.

Well assuming that such a game would work with remote play on the WiiU, yeah I could see that being a pretty big feature.

That's what I said. You used the title [from Eurogamer] knowing it was misleading.
I believe they've sold ~1-2 million each. At least two of them exceeded 1 million in USA alone.

I actually wasn't aware that it was misleading. I am sorry if you were offended by my usage of said headline.

Using the controller to look on the map (at least in multiplayer) is too slow in my opinion. It would require you to take your eyes of the screen instead of just take a quick peek to the left corner of the screen. But i'm interested in seeing what they will do with the controller.

This a perfect example of Nintendo being out of touch with core gaming. This would be the equivalent of moving your car's speedometer to the passenger side of the dashboard. Serious players would not use the GamePad.

I hope there is someone at Nintendo that understands core gaming that can guide their executives. A single comment like this isn't that big of a deal as long as it isn't driving decision making.

Controls maybe... Multiplayer? not so much.

Isn't the quote basically saying they believe people already using the Wii-U might prefer COD on it? How isn't that true? There are people that I know prefer COD on Wii because of the mote. If he was arguing that the Wii-U will become the definitive platform I could understand the Lawls.

Because both were said by me? But I won't respond further to posts regarding the title. I don't want to become the focus of this thread, its about the news itself.

Man if there was only some way you could have had control over the thread title so it wouldn't dominate your threads..

Sucks that GAF forces you to copy and paste from the source. :(

I can never say Scott Moffitt's name out loud not in Terrence & Phillip's/All South Park Canadian's voice.

SCOTT MOFFITT HAD THIS TO SAY TO VIDEOGAME WRITERS TODAY!

Why would players who have been playing this franchise for 5 games/5 years, all of a sudden switch to WiiU?

Its like Halo players switching to PS3 if Halo 4 came out on it.

-The Wiiu isn't super powerful so at most you'll get a bump in resolution.

-The touchpad doesn't seem useful for a fast paced multiplayer match to be constantly looking down at your hands to see the minimap/hud elements

-The new action controller or whatever just mimics the 360/PS3 controller

-I have not heard anything concrete about Nintendo's online plans except for some use of message moderation and that friend codes are back

-When the next generation of hardware comes out for the PS3/360, the WiiU will be the weakest of the systems.

Why would anyone make it their platform of choice for Call of Duty?

Part of the success of CoD is playing with friends. I imagine it's going to take a while before dudebro's and company migrate over to Wiii-U. And even by then, the 720 or PS4 would already be on the market with the superior version of CoD in both graphics and multiplayer.

COD? Probably not.

Whatever finally eats it next gen once franchise fatigue well and truly sets in for the mass market? Maybe.

I applaud Nintendo's efforts to get the core excited about Wii U, but I'd think ZombiU would make for a better candidate. You can already get the COD experience on every other platform, including the Wii.

That said, what did GAF expect him to say. "Yeah, if you like Call of Duty just get a 360" I think most of you would be terrible PR people.

I could see the Wii U's assymetrical gameplay come in play with COD (though this could also be used in Battlefield as well):

Infantry soldiers use the Wiimote/Nunchuck or the Pro Controller.

The Wii U Gamepad acts as the UAV, with the player calling tangos to infantry. Once killstreaks are activated, the Gampad player can control aerial vehicles (chopper gunner, AC 130, etc).

I really can't think of a response that captures my feelings better than this:

Call of Duty sucks now, though. Nintendo can have it. Besides, what better way to have a CoD experience than integrating the Miiverse into the package!

For core gamers, it should be. I can't imagine anyone serious about their FPSs still sticking with dual analogs.

Wasn't arguing that. Simply offered a counter point on system strength, does not translate to much considering the success they have with X360/ PS3 sales.

Seeing as WiiU is more powerful than the 360/PS3 I don't see this as a mad possibility.
People are just too quick to cliched digs at Ninty.

Well, I don't blame them. They are making 360-U controller for shooter (Hardcore) fans but they were hoping that people would preferred them because they have map on GamePad. They need to make up their mind which controller they want to support for shooting games.

And I have one concern about Wii U's network being reliable or not.

Aside from the obvious ideas for airstrikes and as a separate view for any remote vehicles, it would be possible to use the IR emitter on the top of the controller for IR aiming or down-sights aiming, the screen could be held up to the TV and used for down-sights aiming, the touchscreen has obvious uses for quickly selecting inventory items, weapon adjustments etc.

They could do a 2 players online mode, where you and a friend play together against others -- one player on the TV, one on the Wii-U gamepad.

The touch screen could be used to save and edit brag clips or something...

there are plenty of ways they could do cool things with it.

To anyone who's played CoD, there's no way you'd want to look away from the screen for a map. I'm continually looking at it throughout a match
