Nintendo's first mobile game Miitomo out in Japan now, first English video

Was that an old feature they removed or something?

Yeah, Twitter technically doesn't like gif avatars but if you don't change your avatar they won't remove it. Twitters own avatar uploader changes everything to jpg. No idea if the loophole I used still works but I ain't risking it.

Late March, actually. Always been that, most likely due to My Nintendo.

Nintendo sent a notice to explain that it might crash if you have too many follows/followers, or a GIF as avatar.

The official twitter mentions about this problem. Should be fixed in future patches?

Well huh. Thanks for the answer. Sucks for me then since I follow/get followed by lots of people. Hope it gets patched soon!

It annoys me that every time you switch between applications it goes back to the loading screen and refreshes or whatever it does.

That would be the app's requirement for a constant internet connection - Nintendo/DeNA seem to want to be able to track all user interactions both over time and at a particular point in time in order to do things like tweak the game economy or dish out bonuses (this is why it checks with the server before it awards any coins).

In the FAQs section of the app's settings it also confirms that Miitomo can't be used offline at all, I can personally confirm this too. Disappointing, as other social apps have offline modes which let you "use" the app and still send messages or do things that will be carried out once it receives an Internet connection.

EDIT: It seems I was wrong. The game requires an Internet connection when launched from a home menu or resumed from a task switcher. But if you *lose* connection when it's running you can continue using it. Not too bad!

All those Mii's and the photos look as charming as ever, really nice.

Seems like an evolution of LINE's sticker concept, which I'm really digging. So much fun communicating.

Miitomo is Trending Topic in Japan right now.

So when's this out in EU?

Sometime this month.

I would guess it may depend on how the Japanese app launch goes, or they may have PR lined up for launch on a certain date (i.e. being featured at Apple's conference).

My goddamn phone I bought in Tokyo that has never left the country is apparently tied to the American play store. Too lazy to fix it, but hopefully it will let me sign in with both of my IDs once it launches in the other stores.

The biggest one seems to be about $9 US for 100,000 in-game coins. Depending on what that'll buy you, that doesn't sound terrible by the standards that gacha and other mobile games have set.

Are they letting you use whatever Nintendo rewards from Nintendo Account for Miitomo purchase? Because that would be one hell of a backdoor to other Nintendo games/services.

This just looks like data mining software to me. Basically asking you questions and your friends questions to learn as much about you as possible so they can then sell that information. I don't get the point.

That seems to be their strategy. Play Nintendo's games on mobile or games on Nintendo platforms, get free stuff/discounts.

Their goal is to get 100 million+ members signed up for Nintendo Account/MyNintendo, so it's basically a big Trojan Horse for that.

Haha now add a zero and you'll be much closer.

Hey guys...just need a bit of comparison.

On My Nintendo account right now, I have 310 Miitomo Plat. Points, 760 Nintendo Plat. Points and 0 Gold Points....what is everyone else at?

I haven't started playing the 'games' inside Miitomo yet and no idea how to get the Zelda game.

Seeing the footage for this, makes me just think Tomodachi life would've been a great mobile game. I played that game a shit ton when it first came out, but eventually it just grew old fast because none of the activities amounted to anything, and it's not like it's been updated or anything either.

It's weird. There's not progression or anything to really....do and yet I keep going back and messing around with it. It's strangely addicting.

I don't see what this offers anyone not already in the Nintendo ecosystem.

You realize that they're going to offer games for mobile, right? And that using this app earns you points you can use towards discounts and free games, right?
I'm sure you can piece together the rest. Unless you consider iOS/Android part of the Nintendo ecosystem now.

This looks like death. What are they doing.

Trending on Twitter, apparently?

It's an engagement platform like the upcoming movies and Nintendo-branded products you may be seeing. There will be some smartphone games where Google and Apple make 30 percent of the profit on microtransactions, but the idea is to appeal to a different audience (and different audiences between apps) and try to draw them into your own ecosystem where you're the platform holder and people actually pay significant amounts for software, not 70 percent of say $1 to Nintendo.

Seriously, listen to Bill: http://gonintendo.com/stories/254212-bill-trinen-on-miitomo-goals-ip-expansion-and-variety-through-mo Nintendo does not want to be the next Sega, and Sega only abandoned their own hardware when they had no other choice.

I hope that in the near future Nintendo update this app, and allow the possibility to add friends via Nintendo Network ID.
I did not like the idea of just add people via social media or face-to-face
