I have one question regarding this whole patch business, is it possible (or probable) that we consumers will play the game without the patch after release date?

Did you buy digital? No.

Did you buy physical? Only if your PS4 is not connected to the internet.

This game is so hard to give a score I would wager. Usually you form your opinion about a game from the expectations you have. And this game has probably wholly different expectations throughout the potential buyers and reviewers. One will review it based on it being a $60 title. Others will review it based on it being more or less an indie title with a small development team.

Well... do you have the internet? When you buy a new game now and it prompts you to install a day 0 patch, do you? That's really all there is to it. If your answer is no to either, than it is guaranteed to not have the patch on release day. If the answer is yes to both, then you will have the patch.

Maybe I am misunderstanding the question? Are you asking, in the grand scheme of things, how many people who buy this game are going to not have internet connected consoles?

Thanks.

in that case I think the game should be reviewed after the patch. *shrug* it seems rather clear cut to me :/

What I'm asking is the amount of people who will play the game without the patch. If the number is above "negligible" then I think reviews without the patch should be accepted since that version of the game will be in some people's hands. However, in NMS' situation, I don't think that internet connection is an issue since connectivity is a pretty large part of the experience.

Isn't reviewing this a little premature, and is it really right for reviews to go up of what has been emphasised as not the full day one experience?

Edit: That Pure PlayStation review actually acknowledges that issue quite eloquently, but I still disagree.
What reviews ever do include a day one update? I don't see why NMS should be treated any differently. If HG were that concerned the pre-update version was poor then they should have waited.

It's different because NMS won't be sent for review before the patch is live. Anyone playing the game now didn't receive it in a manner sanctioned by the dev/pub.

A developer cannot always endlessly delay a game forever. There are sometimes deadlines that need to be met even at the behest of a publisher.

Reading this thread should enlighten you on a few things

could be just me, but when I read reviews I usually assume they played with the day 1 patch installed unless specified other wise

Correct, the release day is on the 8th a Tuesday, and the patch is coming out tomorrow on Monday.

So it is a fix that releasing prior to the official release date, also considering the Sean Murray commented that this update has at least been in the works since July 10th, roughly four weeks ago prior to even the release date broken copies being streamed. This clearly wasn't something that was planned at the last minute and has been something in works for a quite some time now.

It's probably been in the works well prior to the game going gold as well. New development often ceases for a month or two on the Gold build so as not to break that build.

So where was this attitude towards reviews when Driveclub was fundamentally changed for the better? Or the multitude of games with huge changes as time went on and people said that they shouldn't have review scores changed?

Guess it's different for games that people already wanted to like, huh?

As if the game is going to be massively different after one patch to the point that it alters review scores on a massive scale.

The amount of people complaining who won't even be effected by any of this (not that I'm saying we shouldn't complain about practices that we are against). It's an 800mb patch that makes the game better (hopefully). Yes, that means they shipped an unfinished product, but it's either that and take the patch, or endure another delay. I'll take the patch.

For what it's worth, most games have day one patches waaaaay bigger than that.

There is a difference between "as time went on" and "day zero".

different arguments here. its a different issue when its a huge game changing DAY-1 patch vs. a big overhaul months or years later

they shipped a finished product. the day-1 patch makes it a lot better

Reviews without the patch seem like they're gonna be useless as any kind of gauge of the game.

Unless you picked up the game on the way to your submarine trip to a remote island cabin.

I guess it depends on how many consoles are offline only these days and if this game is viewed as a primarily an online required title.

The size of the download is the big sticking point for me with day 1 patches. I know how much they can help devs and lead to a better experience but it is often a bummer to have to spend a long time downloading them after you get the disc in your console.

Thankfully this is a small one. Under 1.5gb is usually reasonable to me. It's the 5+gb day 1 patches that bug me.

Yeah, but it's important to criticize developers on this. It's only getting worse. What happens when games doesn't fit the disc anymore? Is it ok to throw half the game as a download in order to be completed?

This just in! THPS5 = NMS. Shenanigans!!!!!

Hang on, sorry, have I fundamentally misunderstood how games on the PS4 work?

If this is a day 1 patch, when I buy it when it actually releases, surely I can't play it until it has patched, right?

This is genuinely the first PS4 game I'm buying that has a day 1 patch... do I have a choice? Can I refuse the patch and play the game anyway?

Yes you can pay it without the patch or while downloading the patch. I don't think you will be able to upload stuff to the Atlas though

Day 1 patch fixes most of everything I felt was wrong with the game after seeing some early streams. So it seems a bad idea to review without it.

Why are we upset about a patch?
