Playing it right now and the game is really, really good with plenty to do all the time.

I swear I see more people talking about how others are hyping up this game more than people actually hyping it up.

You do see the odd person saying "game of the forever" and "only game you need." Never can tell if people are being serious or not and you read comments like these for nearly every game.

They are in the minority though and most are just excited to play it like you find in any highly anticipated game thread.

I can't wait for Friday and the PC release, but I'm keeping my expectations relatively low so anything more than that is a nice surprise.

no check is minor when its required every day. most people can get access to the internet. not everyone has access to fast consistent internet day in and day out. MS can make whatever console they want but that one would have sold even worse than this one because there would be people not playing it at all for stretches. also some people travel with their systems.... so you can easily buy a system , install patches and play anywhere with it.

the game is not broken, where was it said that ? day one patches are common, including game balancing and bug fixes. I guess all those are broken too. most games receive numerous balance and bug fix patches months and months after release. where have you been?

The check in would not require amazing internet speeds. As far as I know it was a tiny tiny amount of data that was required and MS even said that you could use your phone to do the check in. Which, in this very thread, is something I have seen suggested that those without internet could use for NMS's day one patch.

Also I think the whole "completely change the way the game is played/adding half the game" is a big overstatement

Read the patch notes again. Besides the "three paths", everything is just building on and improving the existing mechanics and features. Changed the universe algorithm, adding to the creature generation, adding to planets and planet generation, expanding the trading and animal behavior and survival, etc.

Bro, come on man. You know that patch is significant, there where many comments on the first page of the patch thread of people saying that it was and some even saying they had never seen such a significant patch before.

Even Sean himself tweeted to people that the game people have been playing isn't the game that they intended. It's not their vision. It's not what they wanted people to play.

I disagree with your definition of what fundamental changes are. I think a lot of the stuff in the patch changes the game in a fundamental way, for instance that it even
rewrites the lore.

Oh no guys Dan Stapleton that dope at IGN is going to be posting their review in progress at midnight eastern tonight. Prepare for a poor review and unrepresentative score.

I don't think it looks good calling people dopes because they don't have the same opinion as you about video games, but ok.

Oh, I agree the patch is signficant. I disagree with the people framing it as completely changing the gameplay and adding half the game, rather than significantly expanding the existing features. I'd classify the former as updates that add entire acts/ending/etc. (Solus Project adding the ending chapter at 1.0) or introduce completely new systems and mechanics (Prison Architect's campaign, escape mode, etc at 1.0). In contrast, this patch greatly increases the diversity and depth of the existing mechanics of survival, animal interactions, trade, and so on, improving performance and evolving the generation

Yeah, but I guess my point is that I think the game post patch is going to be more representative of what they have been telling and showing us, in order to sell it to us, what the game is supposed to be. Therefore it will reflect more what people expect. I wouldn't want to play something that the developers themselves think isn't in, at the least, a releasable/reviewable state, so for me, whatever they add to get to that point is going to be fundamental content.

Everybody seems to be getting really defensive over what the scores will be. Is their some serious crow riding in this or something?

Suppose it doesnt help that the initial pre-release review is the classic 8/10. The original hum and haw between mediocracy and greatness.

Suppose I should actually read the thing but Instill kinda want to go in blind and get mystified if it's good.

The score has been like the least important thing in this thread so far.

To be fair the review just seem like a reason for the thread to exist. I haven't read the whole thing but it seemed to be started off by people arguing against an early review and the latest pages seem to be people generally just discussing the game.

*These last pages seem to be about MS bullshit original Xbone policies and pizza I don't know what the fuck is going on.

I'm guessing we won't get any based on their radio silence with the PC version. Really disappointing, it's probably another terrible port.

Could that have anything to do with Sony's involvement? I'm not super high on this game, but I'm looking to dive in if the PC port ends up decently. After seeing Sony's involvement with Youtubers today, however, it's clear they're trying to control the narrative for this. I can't help but wonder if they aren't ignoring the PC version, they're just focusing on the PS4 version.

Either way I'll be waiting at least a week or two to see the dust settle, but the patch notes pushed this game onto my eventual buy list, streams look pretty cool too.

Yep, have seen nothing of PC version so far. At the minimum I am hoping an fov option and less pop in at the least for me to probably enjoy it.

As excited as I am for this game, I def have the patience to wait until reviews are out for both versions before I make a decision. If the PC version is a shitty port, meh, I'll get the PS4 version. Not even gonna be mad as long as one version is decent.

I got this in the mail this morning accidentally (forgot to cancel the preorder). I was planning on waiting for reviews before returning it but I'm slightly tempted to just open it now and give it a try. Does Amazon accept returns on opened games? :p

I think it's more likely due to whatever deal they inked with Sony. They're self publishing on PC, but Sony is publishing on console, and probably offered up a significant portion of PR and marketing costs. It seems reasonable to think that Sony would want to have a laser focus of attention on their platform's version of the game. Not saying I agree or disagree with it, but it makes sense to me why we'd only be hearing about the PS4 version first and foremost. I wouldn't be too concerned about the quality of the PC version. Hello Games seems to know what they're doing.

And isn't Joe Danger 1 and 2 on PC? It's not like they don't have experience developing games on PC architecture.

I think their silence is purely contractual, not one of guilt over the quality of the PC version.

In 2013, all we heard was how much of a monster MS was for requiring a minor check in every 24 hours because internet is ubiquitous. Now a primarily single player game requires a massive patch day 1 or its "not the real game" and no one cares? Come on, what about "all the military people on bases, submarine warriors, people in the arctic!".

First of all, I don't appretiate the condescending attitude. People in the military that are able to play games generally have access to Internet. If they are somewhere without Internet, chances are they don't have a console either...

Secondly, Micorosft's initial pitch was an always on console, not a check in once every 24 hours console. The 24 hour check in was part of their PR meltdown/spin during E3 and afterwards. There is a fundamental difference between Xbox One circa 2013 and Day One patches in 2016. If you can't understand that, well, I don't think you want to understand.

That's a piss poor excuse to review it early. Guy just wanted to be the first & all that. I'm not even hyped for NMS but that's pretty disrespectful.

Anyway, predicting an 82 metacritic.

Military bases have internet. Submarines too. I don't think if you are in a sub you'll be playing video games, but let say it's plausible, they have a comm room. And in the Attic if someone brought a ps4 or if they buy it there they sure have internet.

Just saying. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

And the game is 100% playable as it is. Read Sean's post about the patch. And with your logic god forbid that games have an update.

Man, I didn't want to play this, but now I saw my local game store will be getting the limited edition for 70 EUR and I will be getting it on Wednesday. Can't believe I'm so weak.
