I finally got back from vacation yesterday so I was able to get this installed. A couple thoughts...
First off, I got the game through GOG, and even though prior patches were available as standalone downloads, this one was just a "redownload the entire game." 2 GB is pretty small, so who cares, but that was marginally annoying.
Second, I wish there had been clarification on mod support. I had a couple mods installed; nothing major, just one to remove chromatic aberration and scanlines and another to speed up button presses. After crashing to desktop multiple times just trying to launch the game, I ended up completely uninstalling and deleting everything (I backed up my savegame files, of course) and reinstalling clean, which fixed it, but also meant another 10 minutes tinkering in menus getting things set up like they had been before. This is one area where Steam is a lot more convenient than other platforms.
Third, I haven't tried base building because the only base that showed up on a scan was on the worst hellhole in the star system I was in, so no thanks. I decided to finally finish the Atlas path instead (I'd been on 9 stones since I put the game down in September). I did buy a freighter, so that's cool I guess, and the fleets are definitely larger than before (also, way more pirates, though I still take them down in seconds).
I've seen people say they need to upgrade their mining beam to get new elements, but I haven't come across anything I can't mine yet. We'll see how that goes. Terrain generation seems better and I've come across some massive herds of animals that still behave in a very unnatural way. I don't know how I feel about the motion blur; I turned off Temporal AA in favor of FXAA and downsampling (TAA was giving me too many weird frame drops and I don't like how it blurs textures).
Hopefully I'll have a chance to try some of the base building stuff later and see how that works. Frankly, I've always hated doing that in games and I always thought it was a poor fit for this specific game, but we'll see. Maybe I can find some place picturesque that doesn't have extreme toxic rain (seriously, no wonder that house was abandoned).
Where do I find Omegon outside of breaking down tech? I jumped through a black hole after I finished Atlas and naturally it broke one of the techs that requires exotic ingredients.
