No Man's Sky: Foundation Update (v1.1)

I hope they continue to add significant features like this. I'll rebuy it probably next update if it's as good as this one.

Well that offroad ATV is all but confirmed at this point, and from the sounds of it it appears to be similar to the Mako from Mass Effect, with boosters & a turret on top, and even a boost engine. That's what I've read by someone who datamined over on reddit. I mean, the game screams for land vehicles, right? I hope they're coming in the next update, and I hope that update drops next month.

I'm genuinely heartened to see this. I love the game. I don't love how, at launch, the experience wasn't what it was purported to be, but I really really wanted to love it despite that. And I do, but still couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed.

However, this update has provided a number of things i wish were in the game day one, and is a promissory note for other features I've wanted to come. I super happy

One thing I hope they add is more interesting looking planets. I saw a screenshot of a mod that had huge trees and a giant forest. One you'd get lost in. It looked amazing. I wish there were more unique terrain aspects like lakes, big rivers, forests, mountain tops and cliffs, sand dunes etc.

I have seen some 1.1 screens of planets that do appear to have more varied terrain, and you can only imagine this is on a list for the guys to implement. Also saw a pic on reddit of a beach, looked awesome. And now we even get huge fauna groupings with larger variations in size, and the IK appears to be fixed so they're not glitching & going crazy when running. All good things.

The planets look better since the update. I'm hoping though that the flora and stuff like rocks get a bit more varied with future updates. The weather and clouds need a huge upgrade as well. It's pouring rain but you look up and see a starry sky.

I finally got back from vacation yesterday so I was able to get this installed. A couple thoughts...

First off, I got the game through GOG, and even though prior patches were available as standalone downloads, this one was just a "redownload the entire game." 2 GB is pretty small, so who cares, but that was marginally annoying.

Second, I wish there had been clarification on mod support. I had a couple mods installed; nothing major, just one to remove chromatic aberration and scanlines and another to speed up button presses. After crashing to desktop multiple times just trying to launch the game, I ended up completely uninstalling and deleting everything (I backed up my savegame files, of course) and reinstalling clean, which fixed it, but also meant another 10 minutes tinkering in menus getting things set up like they had been before. This is one area where Steam is a lot more convenient than other platforms.

Third, I haven't tried base building because the only base that showed up on a scan was on the worst hellhole in the star system I was in, so no thanks. I decided to finally finish the Atlas path instead (I'd been on 9 stones since I put the game down in September). I did buy a freighter, so that's cool I guess, and the fleets are definitely larger than before (also, way more pirates, though I still take them down in seconds).

I've seen people say they need to upgrade their mining beam to get new elements, but I haven't come across anything I can't mine yet. We'll see how that goes. Terrain generation seems better and I've come across some massive herds of animals that still behave in a very unnatural way. I don't know how I feel about the motion blur; I turned off Temporal AA in favor of FXAA and downsampling (TAA was giving me too many weird frame drops and I don't like how it blurs textures).

Hopefully I'll have a chance to try some of the base building stuff later and see how that works. Frankly, I've always hated doing that in games and I always thought it was a poor fit for this specific game, but we'll see. Maybe I can find some place picturesque that doesn't have extreme toxic rain (seriously, no wonder that house was abandoned).

Where do I find Omegon outside of breaking down tech? I jumped through a black hole after I finished Atlas and naturally it broke one of the techs that requires exotic ingredients.

Ah, Rigogen is underwater?

I also need to find some Coryzogen since my Vy'keen armourer has got a space-cold. Any idea on where to pick that up?

Add Big Things to the PS4 and it will be PERFECT. I'm also jealous over the low flight mod. No reason they can't give us that.

Yes Rigogen is definitely underwater.

And I think Coryzogen was a rare element I found in a blue star system, and only there. Though it could be something with a similar name - I haven't learnt them all yet.

It's kind of a bummer when you find a perfect planet to settle on but there is no base.

Though I guess in the long run when you finally do find a gorgeous and prosperous planet to settle it's more rewarding. Something to strive for.

The way I conduct my game development is not to advertise features in front of enormous audiences like on network television -- or anywhere, for that matter -- that aren't part of the game. I can't even fathom the thought process behind saying "yes" to a question as integral as "can you play with your friends?" if I wasn't really really damn sure. If I were asked something I wasn't sure about I'd say I don't know.

So from my perspective, since he said that, it sounds like it was really part of the groundwork of the game, because he said it so affirmatively and it's such a huge, fundamental question.

In real life if I asked someone something and they said "no" every time but once, my reaction would not be "this guy definitely means yes, I'm not going to press for clarity or validate this at a later stage, I'm sure it will be fine."

It's PSX levels of reading way too much into something...disappointment surprisingly ensued.

Can definitely confirm that even in Normal mode there are planets devoid of all alien life. I landed on one that seemed barren and found no structures in a 5 minute flight. Then I landed and crafted a scanner to scan for several alien constructs. Every single one pointed me to a different planet in the system.

My general feeling on multiplayer is that it would be a distraction for the devs and the game. I want the game to be something with emergent and complex gameplay, facilitated by good AI mixed with intertwined game systems. I want to be able to actually make allegiances with both factions and individual NPCs, and have those have positive and negative consequences. I want to be able hire NPC crew, fighter pilots, etc. that feel like meaningful relationships instead of animatronic people.

There's plenty of co-op experiences out there, but NMS has the potential to be an amazing single-player game.

Third, I haven't tried base building because the only base that showed up on a scan was on the worst hellhole in the star system I was in, so no thanks.

It's kind of a bummer when you find a perfect planet to settle on but there is no base.

I believe you can put on a base on any planet. You just need to build a Signal Booster on the planet. There's an option to find Habitable Bases there.

Add Big Things to the PS4 and it will be PERFECT. I'm also jealous over the low flight mod. No reason they can't give us that.

I would love to get rid of the invisible flight wall on planets, but my guess is they were having problems with geometry collisions. I still sometimes hit invisible areas when flying that slow me down until I get past them. I really hope they get that sorted though.

I would recommend starting a simple base anywhere so that you can start the base building quests and be on the look out for rare building materials when travelling around. There is virtually zero cost to move the base later because they're quick to build, you can reclaim all the materials from a terminal and once you've learned a blueprint it's yours forever.

There have been lakes, rivers, forests, mountains, and cliffs in the game since release. I think I've seen some sand dunes too, but I'd have to verify.

They should hand-create some creatures that actually look good and throw them in along with the random generated versions. Or maybe create some sort of tool for players to make some and submit them for approval. The generated creatures look terrible 75% of the time. Takes me out of the experience when I'm on a great looking planet and then see some giant ghastly creature with tiny wings. It's literally this.

At least blacklist certain combinations or part combinations in the generator.

I set this down when I had a great ship and a decent savings and a paradise planet that my girlfriend liked. I lost the urge to leave and explore and "get to the middle" or whatever and just started kind of settling in... which was hard cause there was no real way to make an impact on this planet other than digging some holes...

Now that base building is up and running I will actually boot this bad boy back up again. Make a mansion on my paradise planet and show it off to the lady. Find a freighter and get that all working and setup to my satisfaction. Maybe upgrade my ship? Then turn it back off and wait for the next update i'm sure :D

Still ... this is a real deal update. Good on them. Personally I never had any of the animosity and hate for the team/Sean that most critics seemed to really enjoy being a part of so it's good to see them still working and still moving towards a point on the horizon.

So... I have kind of a strange bug... I used to be able to build very tiny pillars in the infrastructure section, that were just as high as the other walls and so on. But when I just tried to continue building my base I couldn't build those tiny pillars any more.

Anybody know what's going on and how I can fix it? I need the pillars :/

It's not overly reading into something when the designer of a game says "yes" when you ask if it contains a feature to think the game was going to have that feature

Just FYI, that paradise planet may not be such a paradise anymore. Due to their changes to the procedural generation algorithms they had to push reset on the universe. But it's made for more interesting worlds, and hopefully you'll find another paradise.

I have had no luck finding even one Rigogen so far. Found a water world. No Rigogen. checked seas, lakes and rivers on other planets. No Rigogen. What does it even look like? Does it show up on planet scans?

Still haven't found any Coryzogen either, but I haven't found any snowy planets since the update, so that's probably why. And i'm pretty sure it'll show up on a scan when I do.

One thing is for sure, if there's a way to grow Rigogen at home, I will make a row of it.

It comes in clumps of white glowing balls on the top of long, thin stalks. It doesn't show up on a scan.

Good to know. Thanks!

In concept this really revved my motor. But all the (legitimate) negativity put me off purchasing. But, tomorrow morning I'll get it. Excited.

Do you need to "learn" the recipe for doing that or is it just automatically available now? And how do you bring up the crafting menu? I figured I'd need to find a pre-fab unit and start from there, but if I can just plop down a base anywhere I please that would be a lot easier.

I an many others played well beyond 2 hours and still enjoy it.

I've probably sunk over a hundred or more hours into the game since launch, and I haven't been bored yet. I just can't get enough of exploring. Seeing what the next star system has in store gets me excited every time.

These updates are just making the game that much better. I still haven't finished the Atlas pass yet, but I'm slowly doing it. No Man's Sky is still one of the best "sit at home on a lazy Sunday and chill" games. I imagine if the art design was fugly, the allure of the game would have worn off fast, but the game is beautiful, and this latest update has polished it even more. I've been looking at the screenshots I've been taking on my 4K Samsung, and it's just a breathtakingly beautiful game.

I'm still looking for some rivers though! The new Photo Mode is nice, but I wish there was a faster way to access it. It'd be great if they maybe add it to the quick menu or something. I wish there was a button press to do it, or a combination (like down and triangle or some shit). I hate having to constantly go back and forth in the menus when I want to take a HUDless screenshot then pop the HUD back on.

Interesting. I don't know that I've seen many of these. I've seen some rivers but they aren't very pronounced or cool looking and when I talk about mountains I really haven't seen any cliffs with sharp drop offs. I want forests to be so dense that you can't see anything when you're in them so that you can just get lost. I'm sure the PS4 version held back the pc version a ton but hopefully that's not the case. I've only seen maybe 30-40 planets.

It's supposed to be common like that glowing flower that's used for everything, isn't it? Do you pick it up or destroy it? I don't suppose anyone has a screenshot of them?

I do find it amusing that for the Abumen Pearl plant, it was much easier to find three Abumen Pearls than even one of the twenty Rigogen needed.

Vinny on Giant Bomb had a pretty neat idea of giving players the ability to splice different creatures and species together to create new ones.

Maybe that's what this game turns into, some weird cosmic creation suite. On top of bases let players design ships, freighters, life, hell even planets. Why not?

Could make our on zoo and other aliens come to visit it lol

I still looking for a nice planet to call home. F or G systems have less rare resouces but I rather have a warm color than everything green or blue.

You mine it. It's not that rare.

I think having a "lab" add on in the base would be pretty cool. In general though there should be more creatures on each planet. There are little pockets of them running around a small area but you don't really feel like there are planets teeming with life. They mostly seem barren with random animals around. I wish there was native food that the animals would eat. They need to really improve that ecosystem.

Ok I'm really, really tempted to buy on Steam. It's only $40 Canadian. I am 90% going to pull the trigger. Playing at 60fps is tempting as hell! Guys what should I do!

I believe anything in your ship's inventory is considered valuable by pirates, even iron. I don't believe scans pick up exosuit inventory so empty everything in your ship to your exosuit. I haven't tested it extensively, though. Maybe something of extreme value picks up in scans regardless of where it is placed, I'm not sure.

I tested it out and emptied out my ship. On my exosuit I had only my atlas pass and one stack each of FE, PU, T9 and C. Still got attacked. :P Maybe I'll try emptying my suit too.

Also I saw one of the star destroyer freighters and flew up to it to check it out and see how much it cost, and it immediately got attacked by pirates. I helped fight them off, got a message to come see the captain... but it wouldn't let me board. I'd fly into the light areas to dock and would just bounce off. Am I flying into the wrong spot? Sucks because I lost out on the bounty.

I got something called Tropheum too, and I have no idea from where. It just showed up in my inventory, I don't know if I mined it without noticing or got it from killing a pirate or some aggressive animal. Anyone know what it is and what it's for?

Coryzogen shows up in planetary scans from space, so you can at least check if it's there before you try to find it.

You get Tropheum from killing pirates. I've gotten quite a bit of it in relatively short order since it seems like every other trip I make into space now sees me getting attacked. I hope I don't need to hang on to it, as I've been selling it all off.

I'll just keep looking for it, then.

The pirates have become quite more frequent in the new update. I don't know exactly where it is in every cockpit model, but there's actually a pirate warning indicator there. See that pulsing circle that seems to be purely decorative? It's not. Keep an eye on it, if it turns solid and starts counting down, arm your best gun and charge your shields. When it empties, a pirate event will happen. Either you or a freighter is about to be hit.

If you manage to land on a space station or freighter, it cancels out, I think. Of course, you can also use the indicator to purposely NOT land so you can shoot some pirates.
