No Man's Sky |OT| Hello Worlds.

So I've been trying to find the space station in my system for the past thirty minutes or so to no avail. The waypoint will show up when I first load the game, but when I actually go into space it disappears and I have no idea how to get there. Anyone know if I'm missing something obvious? I've been to the station once before, so I know it's out there... somewhere.

Great Vice essay-ish thing by Sean Murray reflecting back on development of No Man's Sky.

The game doesn't hold your hand. And some people will like that. I've had people tell me, "I like that the game was treating me as intelligent," but then what I think they're saying is: "But I don't think gamers will be able to deal with that." I'm not saying any gamers are wrong, but I am totally OK with doing something different, and I will be totally OK with some people not liking this. Over the five years of developing No Man's Sky, I've made my peace with that.

I can say that there have been times during the making of this game when we definitely would have given up had it not already been announced, and people weren't excited about it. We have gone massively into debt to make this game, as a studio. I've reached a Zen of stress, basically, where nothing can stress me out now, because I'm already past the threshold.

...we can't deliver continuous awe for an infinite amount of time. That's not how human emotions work. But if we can do it once for a player, and make them go into the galactic map and just think: Wow, how big is this game? How big is our universe? Those kind of things. If we do that, I'm happy.

Has Hello Games or Sony addressed the fact the Limited Edition theme isn't a Dynamic Theme as advertised?

Clearly states "Dynamic PS4 Theme".

Yet the video here shows a static image; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNxfFlsfThM

This is twice now that they've been deceptive.
What really? People should be making more noise about this. I was really looking forward to a nice dynamic theme for the game. My copy hasn't arrived yet though.

Can anyone comment on the sound design? Is it any good, as in atmospheric feeling and giving a good sense of space? I won't be getting this game until September so I'd love to know what it's like!

The gameplay loop is addictive as just about any I've experienced. The whole needing to find something and having just about no idea where it is would appear on the surface to be frustrating, but in this setting, it works so well.

I really hope this game will help people feel more comfortable with survival mechanics. Now that No Man's Sky has done it, maybe we'll see other AAA developers start trying...

Then I can finally play my Jurassic Park survival simulator.

So I just built my hyperdrive and can freely explore. What's the thing with Atlas/Palo/Aldo? Is there some reason I should be going in any of these directions and where the hell am I supposed to look?

Also, my first planet was awesome. Great weather, a shit ton of gold deposits, and decent amounts of useful materials.

How do I upgrade my ship? Just find blueprints like for my multitool?

Try scanning while you're in your ship in space.

I didn't think the station icons disappeared...

Yeah, I've been trying that all over space, backtracking to planets I've been to before and scanning around there. Still no luck, I can never get the space station waypoint to appear again. Is it supposed to always show up? Maybe a bug on my end?

Already pre-ordered on Steam, but I'm getting kind of concerned with the fact that I don't actually enjoy watching videos of people playing.

How do you get to Atlas Station?

I haven't seen one in my game, but that's mostly because I'm still mining and trading in my second system. According to the IGN guide:

Atlas Stations are outposts scatted throughout space in No Man's Sky. they are reached through Warp drive and appear on the map as red dots.

You may have seen them in streams, but they're in orbit, just like the standard space station, but they're round.

I just had a wonderful conversation with UPS about my game. It ended with the guy yelling at me that release date delivery isn't a thing and its always the day after.

after so many smashed LE and now shipping problems Amazon can go fuck themselves.

I'm in the same boat. Was taken through a whirlwind of customer service. I'm an hour away from a facility and they ship that shit ups, UPS!. A CSR tells me its going to be delivered today. I used to work in logistics, no... no it is not. Anyway long story short they extended my prime because of shitty service. Doesn't rectify the situation but heeey, I've gotten my prime extended twice so far this year.

Just starting out, but these Sentinels are annoying as fuck.

I'm over here minding my own business, mining some rocks, they fly too close to my beam and they have the nerve to get aggro? Fuck off.

Basically, yes. Should gets some upgrades for the ship by visiting outposts and trading with the locals there, or finding them as well. You can also buy ships from other creatures, but that's likely to be cost prohibitive, at least initially.

I'm about 6 hours in.

So far I've upgraded to a new ship twice, added three new inventory slots to my suit, upgraded my multi-tool four times - one of which I bought from a totally-not-shady alien dude selling totally-not-shady tech out of dufflebag at the trading post, learned over 50 words in two different alien languages, discovered all but one of the planet's animals plus another 20-something plants, broke into multiple 'facilities' and stole their tech - which I now have like 25 new technologies unlocked...

... and I haven't left my freakin' starting planet. This god damn game is going to ruin my life.
I
And to talk about how wildly different experiences can be - I started on a giant, tropical planet full of plants, animals and minerals. My wife, on the other hand, started on a small, desolate wasteland with super-high radiation, almost no plants, no animals, minimal resources and the most aggressive and angry Sentinels I've seen yet. I've been frolicking through alien plains while she's in a constant fight to simply survive.

It's hilarious.

"Broke" into facilities? How? And I assume they are structures you can't get into otherwise? Haven't found any locked structures yet.

Is there any easy way to find your starting location again? I see you can upload waypoints in options but there doesn't seem to be a way to track them.

I went up into orbit and tried to come back down to where I was but lost it due to planet size.

As far as I know it would not matter if you landed in the EXACT spot on the planet you left from..it would be different thanks to the procedurally generated terrain.

My Starter planet is so pretty!

Like everything else, essentially limitless variations.

If you are talking individual ships, they're procedural. Near infinite.

If you mean ones that look dramatically different, can't put a number on it yet, but I've seen... Lots

Awesome! So good, I'm going to have to find that perfect ship, I'll scour the universe for it!

Also, wattup Hawk, nice to see you 'round these parts ;)

I'm addicted. I want to return to the first planets to explore more, but I dont know that ia a good idea due the quantity of planets :D

LE just arrived. It's really fuckin' nice, the case looks like and feels like a hardcover novel. The steelbook is nicer than expected and the comic also seems to have a very short novel at the end. Absolutely worth it, especially Amazon Prime price of just $3 more than just the game.

I'll assume you are on the East Coast?

It seems last night my order shipped not long after yours, since your copy was delivered not to long ago, I guess I should be getting mine within the next hour or so...I hope.

I feel like everything I'm hearing about the game in terms of length and centered around surviving is genuinely cool, but maybe not what I want/need from a game at this point in my life.

So I've been on media blackout for this game. How easy is it to die several hours in and lose everything you've worked towards? That's usually not my type of thing.
