No Man's Sky "Path Finder" Content Update announced

Welp this ran at locked 60fps here with everything maxed (and FOV tweaked to higher values) and now it's 20-30fps and the graphics are completely broken after picking ultra textures.

It's like there is no lighting and everything is incredibly low-res (I spawn next to a gold spot and the gold texture is pitch black/missing). Any up-to-date list of fixes/workarounds for this?

Yeah, I used to run the game at 60fps on my GTX 970, but now I have to lower all the graphics settings to medium just to keep it above 40fps (though I still drop to the 30s in my base). So for me on PC the game now looks AND runs worse =P

I started doing the quests to build the first vehicle today, but my home planet is mostly water with a bunch of tiny islands. The first vehicle (Roamer, looks like the Mako) is god awful underwater. It sinks to the bottom then travels crazy slow along the ocean floor. I've been given a quest to use my vehicle's scanner to search for a Sentinel Depot and retrieve something from inside, but the scanner picks up nothing, the quest log is stuck on the previous stage of the quest (build the scanner), and they can **** off if they expect me to trawl aimlessly along the ocean floor of an entire planet waiting for this scanner to pick up the location I need to go...

GOOD UPDATE

I messaged NX Gamer to see if he intends on testing the Pro version. Curious to see how well it holds 60 fps. I definitely noticed drops but they were in the same places that I had seen them before.

Definitely some weird stuff going on with the PC version. I decided to give Survival mode a shot last night for the first time. No crashes, but definitely runs worse than it should. The filters are also weird, changing to the same one multiple times seems to result in different visuals, which doesn't make sense. And when I try to open the control settings, nothing happens.

I wish there was a way to turn off PS4 controller support. I use my PS4 controller through Steam's new interface to essentially emulate an Xinput controller, but NMS seems to get these wires crossed and tries to double inputs or something, it's very weird.

Hop in your ship. I have a water home too and spent an hour trying to trudge back home before I just jetpacked back and grabbed my ship. The 2nd vehicle is a lot better since it floats above the water.

How does base sharing work?

Can you see other player's bases on the actual planets that they built them on, as-is? The same way you can leave those message cylinders for other player's to read? Do you have to actually find a planet that another player has discovered and settled a base on?

Or do you just download their whole base to use as you choose?

Still nothing =( I guess the quest bugged out. Spent a while flying around checking out every green icon my scans turned up but no depots. Also tried dismantling and rebuilding the scanner and cannon on my vehicle but that didn't fix the quest log either. This game...

Is it safe to assume that this is running fine on OG PS4, very well on Pro, but subpar on PC vs. pre-Pathfinder? I'm seeing a lot of unhappy PC uses.

Ugh, I think I'm SOL on my water planet.. I brought the vehicle into the ocean and I can't get it out due to huge cliffs and the movement is like Mass Effect 1 times a million syrup :lol The quest marker was about 20 minutes of swimming from my base and I had to abandon my car at the bottom of the ocean after 5 minutes. I think I needed 70 of the new material for the booster but I only got 67 from the depot... now what?!

You can summon it from the vehicle pad from your base for free. You can also summon your ship using a bypass chip from any landing pad on the planet. Time to chase those green ? I guess =P

I'm genuinely jealous of you though! My quest bugged out and won't proceed beyond "craft the cannon". The NPC tells me to scan for the depot but because the quest log doesn't nothing is showing up with the scan...

Does the PC version have HDR? It'll be awhile before I get home and reinstall. Didn't think I'd be back to this game but like others I believe this has potential and I'm glad they didn't abandon ship.

I'm thinking of going all the way back to my Starting planet to build my base.

It's literally the most lush planet I've visited with tons of vegetation, wildlife and perfect weather.

Every other planet I visited has some sort of drawback.

I prefer busy planets teaming with life and visuals.

I'm just not sure how to get back there lol. I've been through black holes and all sorts of other things. I probably need to craft 1000 Warp Fuels to get back now.

I tried the pc version last night, and the pop-in while flying seems so much worse than before. Resources are popping right in front of me. On a GTX980 my framerates are rough.

Yeah I just need to swim all the way back there first, heh. The problem is the lack of resources. I scanned for nearby bases but the closest was an hour away so my own base is still closer :) Did you scan for a depot from within the car?

FWIW, the depot I found showed up with my ship scanner; you don't need to actually use the vehicle to find it.

I feel you though, my farming pearl quest is still bugged...never showed me a place on the map where it's supposed to be.

I just found a planet on my way to an anamoly that looked close to 50% water. The first planet in that system was crazy lush and filled with tons of awesome things, but the sentinels were wild. Reading your comment though is making me rethink where I base it up at.
The amount of times I've landed only to fall through the ground is way too damn high.
In my short one with the update, about one hour, it happened to me three times. Could always get back to land, but damn if it doesn't create a puckering moment. Especially since it doesn't save until you touch land.

Making the vehicles 3rd-person was an odd choice, considering the ships are 1st-person only. It feels like I'm controlling a remote control car instead of driving it. Not terrible, but weird.

Man, the stress is real on Permadeath mode. It's sort of intense but I dislike that it's the same start (far away from the ship) as in regular Survival. But man, going to the center (
despite it being "oh wow, it's nothing"
) may be worth it just for the high and adrenaline of getting close and risking to lose everything.

I also like the new base building parts and the fact you can share it.

I am a bit torn on the buggies. On one hand, the are really the quickest way of getting around close to the ground, it's cool to zap around and smashing rocks and shit. However, I really just dislike turning with the right analog. I mean, I get that you move according to the cursor but it just feels off. Like, you can't turn one way and shoot at another.

Also, the fact that you can't take them with you to other planets is something that needs to be rectified a soon as the next update. Limiting them to one place is just a shame, I seriously don't get the decision.

I have a Samsung KS8000. I was unable to get it to go into HDR mode no matter what I tried (EVGA 1080 SC, every combination of resolution and bit depth / chroma setting).

So I would say, the answer is no. I could have simply missed something, but I doubt it.

Yeah I agree, the vehicles seem far more useful for exploration on new planets than tooling around near your home base. We need some Aliens-esque dropships that fly down from the freighter.

It's working pretty well for me on the Pro, but I have found it to chug at times when I'm exploring in the roamer exovehicle. I also had the game freeze up while in the roamer once.

It's the same approach as Halo, and likely for the same reason: third-person gives wider overview of the surrounding terrain so you can plan a better route. They then also use the Warthog-style stick control to minimize the control difference between on foot and in vehicles.

I would really like to see a map in the next update, so you can mark your points of interest and be able to go back. Same for the galaxy map, should be able to click on a visited planet and plot a route.

I think there's ways to mitigate limited visibility -- multiple cameras, showing an overhead topographical map with POIs, etc. 3rd-person was definitely the easier option for them to implement, but not necessarily the better one since it reduced immersion and consistency. But in the grand scheme of things, not a huge deal.

I remember hearing/seeing something that said that if you don't have a home base, a freighter will work to store your multiple vehicles (including land based ones). Is this something that can be done to transport your buggies to other systems possibly? I thought the trailer said you could teleport them to you anywhere...or was that just on your home planet?

Edit - From their official website, it does state "Master the surface of your home planet using new Exocraft". Still, makes me wonder about putting them on the freighter...can it be done?

I'm assuming shared bases will help address this - or even just a future update that adds exovehicle depots to certain types of indigenous facilities. I don't necessarily care to haul around my own exovehicle if I could just rent one.

Performance feels more uneven and bizarre than ever before on PC. Looking at the horizon I get 30 fps semi-locked, looking up or down it shoots to 60. On a 980ti. Like...what?

I checked on the Steam forums and some guy said this:

"Yes, there is also HDR support on the PC. Look in the settingfile.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\Binaries\SETTINGS\TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.MXML

Here you can find the line:
<Property name="UseHDR" value="true" />

Standard is "true" for me."

I don't have a HDR setup yet to test it out though.

Yeah, scanner didn't work in the car or the ship. I got frustrated and started a new game, which has also miraculously fixed my FPS problems. Back to 60fps. That's kinda worrying if the update has borked performance of saves :/

There are definitely some performance issues. It's really strange how they're able to optimize it so well for PS4, but since the beginning the PC version has been having all kinds of issues.

As a side note, why in the world is the option to turn off the damage numbers only available on PC...

They really need to step up their game with the PC version support.

This latest update has pushed me off the fence, especially the Pro Updates and the pics you all are posting. Gonna look for it after work!!

I was hooked on it for a week or so, then just got bored. Put it on today and there is so much new stuff I dont even know where to start.

Nah go ahead, there are more than one vehicle, one of which can traverse water with ease. I'm not sure how to get them though. And while you need the car to scan for the quest items, taking the car to them is not required. Flying is both easier and faster. Wild sentinels is a bit annoying though. I've got constant heavy rain 24/7 (red text but apparently not extreme anyway) on my lush planet, I love it :D

Edit: On the topic of multiple vehicles, how do you buy a second spaceship?? I only see a trade option when talking to aliens.

Just defended a giant spacefreighter from pilots, landed on it and could buy it for a cool 59mill. How the fuck do I earn that much moolah? I played for hours when this came out and only amassed 5mill.

You know how gaming has repetitive interactions designed solely for profit that are referred to as "farming"? No Man's Sky took that literally. Plant some seeds and watch those profits grow. Apparently prices have been tweaked in the new patch, but it used to be the best cash crop was Mordite. Plant a ton of it, harvest it, craft Lubricant, and sell the Lubricant for a large sum. You could clear $20 million credits an hour.

I'm pretty much stuck on an extreme cold planet.

Still very early in the game so don't even have any suit upgrades, didn't realize I had no plutonium on me and landed on this planet, did NOT expect it to be an extreme planet. Landed on a tall cliff, no plutonium being detected by scanner nearby to refuel launch thrusters, no zinc either to recover my hazard protection while outside, can't last outside for more than a minute and since I landed on a cliff it's hard to get back to the ship, and storms keep rolling in frequently which makes me only able to stay outside for seconds.

This is on normal mode.

There needs to be a way to see more information about planets before actually landing on them.

There's an energy pack you can construct with either carbon or iron?

Load previous save? This happened to me on my first playthrough, and it taught me a valuable lesson; never, ever, ever, ever let your launch thrusters run out of fuel, and never leave base without a minimum of 500 plutonium in reserves. Iron, zinc and Thamium too. Because you never know.

Very true, especially since the Foundation update. Plutonium is so rare now, it should be really expensive on the trading market. Not sure why they did that, except maybe to encourage on-foot exploration as you try to scrounge enough Pu to lift off.
