No Man's Sky "Path Finder" Content Update announced

There's an energy pack you can construct with either carbon or iron?
If you were talking about the shielding shard, it also requires platinum, which I didn't have, and since it was an extreme planet I couldn't really go far from my ship to find stuff.

Couldn't load an earlier save because I entered and exited my ship more than 3 times trying to find plutonium, so all saves were of me on that planet lol.

I ended up finding a single shard of plutonium (thanks to photomode scouting lol), which my scanner would not identify for some reason.

I checked on the Steam forums and some guy said this:

"Yes, there is also HDR support on the PC. Look in the settingfile.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\Binaries\SETTINGS\TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.MXML

Here you can find the line:
<Property name="UseHDR" value="true" />

Standard is "true" for me."

I don't have a HDR setup yet to test it out though.

Ok, well maybe I don't understand how the Samsung KS8000 works with different color settings on the PC. I just assumed that the little HDR icon would show up on the information screen in a game that supports HDR (like when I'm using the PS4 Pro).

Also, there seems to be a lot of subtle color 'banding' in various areas, which I wouldn't expect to see if those color depths were actually attained. However this could just be a result of their particular HDR implementation.

I did check that the UseHDR setting is true (on by default as you said).

Does anyone know if the HDR icon ever shows up during PC use? I've only ever been able to get the UHD icon to show up (regardless of the settings).

Note: I currently have my GTX1080 set at 3840x2160 - 60hz - 4:2:2 - 12bit

Undocumented changes in Path Finder (collated from Reddit)

* The range for collecting from plants in farms has been increased significantly. Now you can hold the button and collect from plants which are 3-4 rows behind your current container. Works in Freighters and planet bases.
* You can harvest some resources by shooting them from the atmosphere with your ship's photon cannons or phase beam. So far I can confirm the following can be harvested in this way: Plutonium, Iron, Carbon, resources in depots
* Color palette for new AND existing creatures has been updated, along with their textures and in some cases some minor details of the creature. (I've also noticed the procedural audio system for creatures has been updated; creatures near my home base are making different vocalizations and don't sound like anything I've heard in the game before)
* Crashed ships are no longer locked to +1/-1 slots compared to what you currently have. However, keep in mind that they have a number of damaged slots which need credits to repair. Mutitools now also vary in slots.
* You are now able to move while activating a save beacon.
* In the System Log moons are differentiated by a dashed line around the planet symbol.
* Starship weapon upgrades from the Foundation update have been removed (strange)
* Nanite clusters can be obtained not only from tech upgrade containers, but also from destroying spaceships, Sentinels, Freighter cargo containers and in some cases as distress call rewards or talking to aliens
* You can re-color decorations in base building. Previously they were one color only.

One little nice UI thing I noticed is that when you scroll up and down in the ship inventory screen, the ship will slowly shift perspective. Useless but nice little parallax visual effect.

I don't like what they've done to the water. I haven't actually been on a water planet myself but from what I've seen on Youtube it seems the water lacks transparency and just looks like a pool of blue paint. Is this Youtube or the norm?

OK, wtf, were Plutonium deposit spawns reduced a lot since Foundation Update, or did I just get extremely unlucky and warp into the worst solar system in the entire universe. Never had problems finding it when I used to play.

Went to the nearest planet to stock up on Plutonium...haven't found a single deposit in over 10 mins of walking around, tons of everything else though. It's actually really irritating me. Stuck again.

Yes, stuff like platinum and zinc flowers were reduced drastically together with plutonium and thamium. There are now huge mega clusters of those red things on certain moons primarily, but all planets should still have them to a lesser degree. This happened at the same time as they locked titanium behind special equipment iirc.

The feels when you run into a thamium cluster of 15-20 flowers :lol

Yea, I think it's just a little too sparse now. I was stuck on a water planet for quite a bit because I couldn't find any damned plutonium. It definitely makes you think more strategically about venturing out, making each drop count, but on a water planet where land is sparse as it is, it becomes very difficult to do much.

...Of course it didn't help my life support systems were getting stretched extremely thin...couldn't make owner packs, so two I found lasted me a while...even being near death several times. Now that I found a solution (dismantle a gun part for plutonium just so I can gtfo), despite it being a nerve wracking experience I enjoyed it. Really added to the desperation of being a space traveler on an alien planet :D

For people with PC FPS issues the fix for me was to disable in-game vsync and turn it on in Nvidia panel with triple buffering. Have a 980ti and was getting crazy low FPS. Also set the fps to max.

Wow, Survival is way more brutal than the original game. I don't even think it's possible for me to progress with the starting location I got. Is that just how it goes in this mode?

You just have to play very different in the early part of Survival. First advice I would give to anyone, is avoid sprinting and jetpacking as much as possible, they melt your life support away. Pace yourself and work towards caves and POI's to recover hazard protection. Once you find a place to rest, standing still stop life support from draining, so you can take the time to think and plan your next move to get you closer to your ship.

Quick question...with the bases, you can warp to them at any time, yea? Can you warp back to where you came from? Or do you have to make Jump after jump to get back?

too little too late i'm afraid

Oh look, a drive by shitpost.

I am REALLY tempted to boot this back up, but I have so many games I want to finish that deserve my attention and I'm 100% committed to Horizon before I start that ADD shit again where I jump around from game to game.

NMS was such a massive time sink when I played it at launch. I just know that if I let it sink it's claws into me, I'll be hooked.

I can't even make it off the first planet on survival. Finding lack of resources for life support extremely annoying
Yeah core resource distribution on all modes seems to be pretty unbalanced, I could understand if it was this hard to find stuff after you have progressed, but it's just too crazy right from the get go, and it just gets easier as you go so it's kind of backwards...

also, buying resources from the Galactic Network is a joke. 44 Plutonium available, that's it? lol

Right, but is it a one way trip though?

Your home base teleporter keeps a list of the last four systems you teleported to, arranged from most recently visited to oldest visited. When you teleport to your home base from a new place, the last location on your list gets deleted and the new one is added. Why Hello decided to limit it to four I don't know, but it makes inadvertently not wiping one of your favorite systems off the list a constant thing you have to watch. Compounded by the fact that the list has a bug where it only shows the original procedural names for the systems, not the names you gave them, so it's hard to even remember which system is which.

You'll find a way. Just stick with it. Look for platinum (add iron for shields) and thamium, and grab plutonium on the way to your ship. Ignore the resource icon that shows you where Heridium is because the chances are you'll find some either on the way to your ship or nearer your ship. The trick is to take your time and never rush, unless you can find stacks of thamium, in which case you can afford to run. If there are any caves on the way there, take the opportunity to hide away and mine carbon/iron while your hazard shield powers back up. Just DON'T PANIC!

Wait, I've just started building a base and hired a technician before the game told me to. How do I fix this so that the game recognizes I'm on the next step of the quest line?

Edit: nevermind lol. Having returned to the space station to see if I can retire him, I'm told to go back and talk to him. Argh (but phew).

I think you meant to have one of these:

For what?, care to elaborate?

That would defeat the purpose of a drive by shit post.

I didn't play the last update (foundation?), so once it's finished downloading to the pro, I'll jump back in. Any talk from the devs about eventually doing more with multiplayer?

Most excellent. Thank you. Just found a place that I'm decided to call home. I can love the base, and this system has decent stuff in it. Might as well start it now, at least to get the extra gear from the housing missions and stuff.

Still nothing =( I guess the quest bugged out. Spent a while flying around checking out every green icon my scans turned up but no depots. Also tried dismantling and rebuilding the scanner and cannon on my vehicle but that didn't fix the quest log either. This game...

Have the scanner in the buggy, press down on dpad, scan for facilities or structures or whatever the option is. Exit buggy, get in ship, fly to that point. Will be a stock of large canisters to blow with grenades or a base to download data from a panel, depending on the quest.

I'm sure someone has already seen this but my GF plays this gam everyday and you can grow weed now!!!!

I think I'll check out the new update, haven't played since last year but I've got a new Videocard since then so it'll be neat to play.

I really do appreciate thia game. I only played like 35 hours, but as a household it's on all the time.

So i bought this today after news of the pathfinder update. Put disk in and it did over 5GB of updates.....log history shows 1.20 as the Pathfinder update but it also did a 1.21 as well with the notes simply saying "Bug fixes". So they already patched some issues from Pathfinder so thats good!

I wish they would work on their clouds. I love skyboxes and they just look really weird

Yeah the clouds look really shitty compared to everything else, like they just did a Perlin noise filter on a skybox texture and called it a day. I'd love to see more a dynamic weather system that generates volumetric clouds. Way back in the first post-release update Sean wrote, "Temporal AA and my new cloud rendering tech should be coming soon too." The temporal AA got added, but we still haven't seen that new cloud tech.

Oh cool, so there may be something in the works. I just really love a good skybox and that would be icing on the procedurally generated cake

I think plutonium is even more scarce now.

I'm considering going back to my Normal mode game. There's nothing really that difficult in Survival any more anyway, just annoying Plutonium shortages.

So the visuals were upgraded for everyone or just Pro?

Because I think it looks better in my original PS4. XD

The updates are still great, on my way to build the vehicle.

Though the game icon now been red is ...so-so. Prefer the original, but was an interesting change.

Just got the third vehicle and how useless. Storage is worthless as movement is so bad. Using vehicles for more than a joyride has been really a waste.

A ship with storage is better and the vehicle is just a slightly mobile chest. Collect with ship and just dump resources into the large vehicle. Hover bike is the only fun one to use.

Controls are stiff and catching on trees is annoying. Broken geometry I understand but even the giant vehicle still gets stuck in trees AND gets stuck on slopes so is unusable on most planets. Certainly couldn't go more than around the corner from my home base before I got stuck.

I hope the next patch is just polishing and system-enhancements. Base missions are so linear and weightless in terms of what is expected. The vehicle missions in particular just shine a blistering spotlight on how barren worlds are due to such nonexistent interactivity. Creatures rarely spawn in in time to factor in and there's next to no combat motivation to even fight them if you stop long enough for them to get drawn in. You're still just better off using a ship to escape sentinels than deal with mobility limitation of vehicle AND less escape ability when you mine too much.

They have added new elements and forming and components for crafting, but nothing in those systems feels like discovery. There's no ah-ha moments like in minecraft. You create things, but the creations barely or don't even affect how you play. Mining laser and ship flight are still the go to methods of attaining anything.

Overall, the vehicles suffer from the same problem that travelling on foot has. There's no way to summon your ship to leave, so traversing back to the base is even more annoying than going back to your ship because it means you are even more limited in range of exploration since you can dock the vehicle into your ship.

Pretty much my thoughts as well. Adding new stuff is cool but the base game still pretty bland.

If these patches eventually lead to a minecraft style multiplayer experience then this game might get a whole lot better. Until then though......

There's really not anything I feel multiplayer would add. In-game factions aren't even fully fledged like Elite Dangerous. The community goals and quests in that game matter, but there's nothing analogous here.

The NPC's and their factions and influence and presence really need to be implemented. Like, they are just mannequins.

You know how gaming has repetitive interactions designed solely for profit that are referred to as "farming"? No Man's Sky took that literally. Plant some seeds and watch those profits grow. Apparently prices have been tweaked in the new patch, but it used to be the best cash crop was Mordite. Plant a ton of it, harvest it, craft Lubricant, and sell the Lubricant for a large sum. You could clear $20 million credits an hour.

Didnt even know you can plant stuff. Thanks.

Does anyone know if getting hyperdrive upgrades is any different in this update? I've yet to get any hyperdrive upgrades, and I've played for a long time. I keep getting mostly the same kinds of blueprints, but nothing for the hyperdrive.

It makes me think the reason for Sony never throwing Hello Games under the bus was the release schedule, I wonder if Sean and Co had told Sony it wasn't ready and that Sony forced their hand in to a release and only now are we kind of seeing their full vision for the game.

They really are doing some great work to bring this game up to scratch and closer to what people imagined they were getting in to.

In survival/permadeath the ability to perhaps craft a distress beacon or call out to a friend when you're about to die and have no method of collecting lifesaving materials seems like a pretty worthy use of multiplayer. Co-op base building as well.
