My challenge :
No 2020 games (or the strict minimum). I can buy older games as my "physical backlog" is quite limited ( 2 physical games and 1 from PS+ I really wanted to play).
"Physical backlog" :
- Xenoblade Chronicles
- Final Fantasy XII
The Last of Us (PS+) Done !
- The surge (PS+, still don't know if I want to play it or not)
Games completed :
- Dragon Age Origins (started early 2019, finished 6th January 20, around 80h)
- The Last of us + Left Behind (Started 1st January, finished 19th January 20, 18h30 + 2h20, Survivor Difficulty)
Finally I got to play this "masterpiece" everyone is speaking about. I was almost completely blind on it (I just knew about the setting : infected people, post apocalypse). I was expecting a strong narrative game with OK gameplay. And it's what I got. I loved the atmosphere, story, characters. The formula "corridors, stealth section, corridors, stealth section..." got me quite scared at the beginning but hopefully there are some really "cool" moments in between to change a bit.
I played in Survivor so it means no "Listen mode" (I discovered that because I checked somehting on Youtube) and I am quite happy I did. Relying on your own sight and hearing make the stealth more intense. However the stealth sections with the infected were a nightmare as they were extremely sensitive to sound and most of these encounters ended up in shooting session... But toward the end I started to like them and got much better at it.
Now the action parts... it felt terrible. Movement are clunky and I felt really handicapped when several infected were suddenly popping up at me. I guess it's a developer's choice to reinforce the survival and realism feeling but it was a pain for me... Also the checkpoints mid battle are sometimes questionable (It's not a great idea to autosave mid battle when the player has loose all its HP on one single mistake...)
However I really like small details like how you search in your backpack when checking your inventory or switching weapons. Add a bit of strategy and planning.
The story really grew on me and the last part (Heavy endgame spoiler !!
when Joel gets out of control when learning that Ellie has to die) was strongly emotional for me. The fact that I have a young daughter might have help on it. Also I like the ending and I was really sad/conflicted.
"Left behind" is forgettable...
In conclusion, all along my playthrough I was conflicted to decide if this game is really great or that it's not really a "video game". There is so many scripted events (this disturbed me a lot) and everything can feel like a "interactive movie". So I'll put it like this : It's an awesome cinematic experience but just a good video game. However, I easily see myself doing another playthrough in the future and this is something didn't happen to me in a long time. I want to play Part 2 but it could easily wait 2021
Currently playing :
- Xenoblade Chronicles (Not yet started actually EDIT : Started 25th January 2020)
I am really in mood for JRPG now and a friend of mine lent me his Wii with Xenoblade this summer. I have heard only good things about this game so now it's time play it !
