Nokia woos PA with N-Gage QD....with some success

I opened my own box with the trepidation on display in today's comic, if not the final result. When I think about what I would send a person who tried to derail my product launch, the product they brutally sodomized over several months is not high on that list. It isn't even low on the list. I would erect safeguards to keep anyone in my organization from inadvertently sending one and subjecting my shit to further ridicule. But there it was, nestled there in hay like the Baby Jesus. I don't know why the hay was in there, maybe it's deadly poison hay.

Gabe actually uses the N-Gage QD as his personal phone now, and the irony nearly peels off my skin. The reality is that they have made an excellent phone that is kind of a half-ass gaming rig - at least, and this is what I'm realizing, for the kinds of games they keep pushing. Pocket Kingdoms is a quirky multiplayer strategy game that doesn't really make sense on any other platform. Look at Pathway To Glory, another strategy experience that plays to the actual metal of the system. Are they finally figuring something out? That they have created a platform with strengths and weaknesses, and that development can accentuate one of those and downplay the other? I'll be God damned.

Quite the turnaround, for these guys.

I'm all about cellphone gaming. I'm not going to bust out a SP to play while I'm waiting in line, but I don't mind grabbing my phone for a quick game of Rayman Bowling.

Pocket Kingdoms actually sounds a lot of fun. If I didn't just buy a DS I'd probably get a QD for that and Pathway to Glory.

PA always do that to everything. Xbox was also something they initially hated.

Gabe also said he was unimpressed with the DS, I'll give him until March to pick one up.

They tend to start liking something when someone gives them something for free or a free trip.

Or, I don't know, the N-Gage actually apparently has a couple good games that are worth playing.

I agree with them on the DS. I haven't turned mine on since launch day and it's such a long wait for Wario Ware and Advanced Wars.

So the QD finally fixes some crucial problems that should have been resolved before the original even launched. What about the 'software' problem?

I agree with what EA said, sooner or later Nokia will get it right.

This is true. Mobile phones are getting better and better. Next year we have HD mobile phones coming to the UK. No need for a seperate Mp3/media player. Plus you can have a fairly decent(for the device) megapixel camera built in as well as pda functions and stuff.

Where was the thread when PA said Metroid Prime 2 and Half-Life 2 were their picks for GOTY? Or their glowing praise of Mario Tennis? I don't agree with their views but I find it funny how we completely ignore the more significant news updates. I guess we just swept that under the rug.

How many units did the NGage sell this year? They can keep praising the thing and market the shit out of it, people are still not gonna buy it!

Nokia missed the boat.

They had a chance..and it was a good chance to sell pocket gaming to older masses....if they had had Pathway to Glory and Pocket Kingdoms at launch, decent price and a non-retard to design the system it would have stood a chance...but alas....

Agreed, the "next generation" is here. The NDS and PSP will trounce the N-Gage every which way.

Though, honestly, the dated GBA alone wouldn't have worked up a sweat doing their job. My point is, before the NDS and PSP, Nokia may have had a chance, but that chance is BLOWN, and they won't get another.

The guys at Penny Arcade are like Harry Knowles. They act like honesty crusaders until someone sends them something for free.

That post just is more proof that people don't understand what N-Gage is. It's not a handheld gaming device, but a platform for mobile gaming development. Nokia wants N-Gage to become that platform that other mobile carriers use for their phones to play games. In the future they want to have regular looking cells to be playing N-Gage games.

Until the PSP or DS can make a long-distance phone call, they're both in a very different market than Nokia.

And if that's the case, then fine. I just remember the PR and hopes Nokia was spewing an E3 or two ago, about taking on the GBA and whatnot. What you say might be their new angle now, but that wasn't the case a year or two ago.

IIRC, they were just using the GBA as a comparison to what their hardware could do, no "We're going to kill the GBA!".

No, thats not what NGage is, and anything else is speculation.

And IIRC, they were, at one point, taking potshots against the GBA left and right. Whatever their intentions where, they had me and everyone I know thinking they were going to take on the GBA. It was laughably bad. The concept and the (original) device.

Don't get me wrong. Western cellphone games is FUCKING BAD, and if Nokia can do ANYTHING to bring it up Japanese levels, then that's a good thing. I just don't see the N-Gage pulling it off yet.

What they need to do is dump N-Gage and make a new brand. Make sure they dont repeat the same mistakes.

The QD was *WAY* too small for my hands... Those buttons were miniscule, it's like the total opposite of the original Xbox problem...

Ngage will be good one day. Bigger screen would be nice, good graphics, cheap price lol... and GOOD GAMES. :lol

i saw someone with a QD the other day and thought it looked really cool. i dont understand the hate? why must this forum shit on everything not japanese or extremely popular?

What is NGage, then?

Ngage is currently two phones that support Ngage games. If you call that a platform, then you should call the GBA a platform, as QD is effectively the GBASP.

It's just better that way.

Its a nice little phone for applications. Just having the direction pad on the left and a separate 'ok' button makes all series 60 applications easier to use, not just games. I use mine for GPS navigation - bluetooth GPS, lovely. The QD itself is cheaper than a PDA.

I took a look at an N-gage, but I figured I'll be texting people more than gaming, so I just picked up a 6820 instead.

Also I had a 5510 before this anyway.

Hopefully a future iteration of N-gage has a screen in a better ratio.
