Not impressed with KFC

I don't care much for KFC's chicken. There's a local grocery store that makes the best chicken in its hot bar. I've been craving it too.

Where I live there is just KFC and Popeye's (which wasn't here a few years ago) and due to there only being KFC for a long period of time, my family seems to prefer KFC. I never really liked KFC chicken. The chicken itself is generally weird looking (even the white meat) and has a ton of bones. The chicken also doesn't taste that great. Now, after having Popeye's, I absolutely hate having KFC. A breast at Popeye's is huge and generally will just have one tiny bone in the center holding it all together. At KFC, you would be lucky to get 50% chicken on a breast. Popeye's also has biscuits and better fries, so they win.

For many years KFC was my only exposure to fried chicken and I genuinely thought it was the food of the gods.
Now I live in Cork where we have a chain called Hillbillys and their chicken is just so astronomically better that it's almost hard to believe.

I went to a KFC near work a while ago out of boredom and the chicken seemed to be, like, fluffed up somehow with flour and stuff. As in, in the middle of the piece of chicken there was all this floury bready stuff. Very disappointing.

I just discovered Ralphs (Kroger) deli fried chicken and it's great. I prefer it to KFC and Popeye's and it's much cheaper.

You're not supposed to be impressed KFC. I just eat it, and take it for what it is, fast food chicken.

A lot of people prefer Popeyes I notice as well, never really loved it. I honestly find places like Churches, KFC, and Popeyes to reside within the same tier of mediocrity. Wish I could get me some chicken from Kenny's Ribs or something out here, but there's nothing really comparable where I live now.

Homemade has pretty much been my best bet. Nothing beat's my mom's chicken yet.

Have you guys tried Willie Mays in New Orleans? It's supposed to be, hands down, the best fried chicken, period, but I was too afraid to go there when I visited because it's in the ghettos, so I went to Fiorella's instead, which was amazing.

I don't know if it's recent, or just started noticing as I got older. The KFC of my youth served normal sized chicken pieces, comparable to in size to the cuts you see in markets. In the last two years, I've ordered KFC twice and the chicken pieces were so small, I thought they must used only the most emaciated chickens for their menu. Maybe it's a Canada thing. The weird part is, all the other chicken chains serve normal size chicken parts.

It's not a new thing. Several major chains have slowly reduced sizes of specific items over the years. My father's big thing was telling everyone who'd listen that the Big Mac had shrunk significantly since he first started eating it in the 80's.

I've had terrible stomach pains as a result of eating both Taco Bell (in the late 90's, during the run-up to Star Wars Episode I) and KFC (from someone who was prepping and handling the chicken with his hands sans gloves). That said, I went there a month back and found that it was pretty good. Bought one of those snack pack deals they have for $5, and it was quite a bit of food for the money.
