NPD Sales Results for April 2015 [Up1: Xbox One #1]

It was 2nd overall in March, 4th in terms of SKUs in April, is one of the few PS4 games to do well in Japan, and sold better than Sony expected in Europe according to an interview this week, and passed a million a while ago. So you can give up on this phony narrative of Bloodborne not selling well and not being a good investment.

Agreed.

Bloodborne is the best exclusive I have played on any current gen console so far - so for that, I am extremely appreciative of the investment.

It was - going by the results estimated in this thread - really close, like 13K difference. $50 dollars (more for some deals) only needs a fairly modest response from consumers to generate something like a 13K difference.

Also if you take issue with reveal, etc. out of it the XB1 isn't that bad. Exclusives aside it's a bit less powerful than PS4 and you can get most of the same games running fine on it (just not as fine as PS4).

It's not that hard to convince people to save $50 to $100 bucks and trade 1080p for 900p or a stable frame rate for some frame drops if they're not particularly swung by either consoles exclusives.

PS4 sales were okay given price/trends and a few deals helped XB1 slightly edge it. Hardly means anything one way or the other apart from confirming that the XB1 has to be decently cheaper than PS4 to maintain similar baseline sales (which was already clear from previous sales trends and performance).

It just surprises me, I view a console purchase as a 4+ year investment. $50 over 4 years is barely worth thinking about. I probably lose that much to faulty vending machines just buying drinks at work.

Shocking. If MS plays their E3 right and Sony is really launching blanks as far as big releases this year, I wouldn't be shocked to see MS clean up this year.

A really good Halo 5 bundle with a good design could be a game changer in the US.

That's why the PS4 was down this month? Seriously?

It's a great game. It's a profitable game. It's a game that sold incredibly well to hits core audience. But it's not the kind of game that will keep attracting new players.

Do you still think I'm a troll?

Nope :)

Looks like the Wii U will finally reach 4M in the US this summer (aka it only needs 50K more right, so possibly in May)? While it's taken absolutely forever to get there, a milestone is a milestone I guess. I guess an eventual 5M LTD in the US isn't completely out of reach (assuming 500K this holiday...) And thanks for the work Zhuge!

The USA and Japan are the two biggest markets for the Wii U and sales there are only around ~6.3m combined. That's um.... bad, but hey, at least it's not Sega Saturn bad :p

I'll be surprised if we see much over 10 million combined in those two regions and even more surprised if worldwide sell through reaches 15m+. Especially as the Wii U has yet to reach 10m worldwide after more than 30 months on the market.

Just wanted to thank you for your work.

Thanks for the charts, ZhugeEX, they are seriously awesome to have.

Cheers guys. :)

Game wasn't bundles outside of UK. NPD tracks US and Retail.

It also is one of the most bought games currently on PSN according to other's this in thread. Which is not tracked by NPD.

There were a bunch of trade-in deals and Mortal Kombat defiantly ate up it's spotlight 2 weeks after it's launch.

It has done what it's suppose to do. People will continue to buy it retail and Digital.

But didn't the Saturn do like over 5M in Japan alone lol? Its US sales were absolutely miserable though I agree haha.

10M in those 2 regions? ... hm, I guess that's possible (sad that it's not certain T_T). Wii U will likely hit 3M in Japan at least, but I still think 7M might be a stretch for the Wii U in the US unless they cut the price and actually see a decent sales effect....

I just want to help defuse this situation before it gets to personal. Perhaps if you post some data supporting your beliefs then maybe people will be convinced of them. Don't forget to watermark it with your username so I'll know you're the one who posted them incase others quote it.
the 1% stuff is in reference to me being an idiot a few months ago, right around the time sony announced 18.5 million consoles sold. But i've gotten over all that.

ah. it's good to know there's finally a mutual respect between us =]

Nah man, just about that time will be Quantum Break hype train. In fact, I don't see Sony ever getting back in front.

Come on man I love remedy games as much as the next guy but QB will do for Xbox sales about what Sunset Overdrive did.

Which is to say it'll do nothing for xbone sales.

Saturn sold through ~7.2m units in the USA and Japan over its lifetime. Yeh, guess I was just talking about USA where sales were abysmal. Perhaps the Dreamcast would be a worse console as they only sold ~6.9m in Japan and the USA.

I too think 10m+ is unlikely in those two regions hence why I said I'd be surprised.

There's no crazy trade-in deals this month for x1. I'm 99.9% sure ps4 will win may.

Trade in deals only go so far. There still has to be demand for the product. E3 hype could increase the XB1 demand, but the fact that it is still the lesser powerful console will still affect it's long term sales.

Good point. Forgot about the Wii. I was wondering how it was higher when the two majors are trending more than last Gen
It really isn't a good point.

As someone else pointed out, 360/PS3 were completely backloaded.

PS3 because of price, and then 360 getting a second wind with Kinect.

It was all around an nontraditional generation, that was repeating historical norms. Those norms are that gaming consoles are a growth market. Something that won't be repeated this generation. We'll have to go back to around two generations (unless this gen has a longer tail) to see totals this low.

Yeah I get that - I'm the same. But a lot of people it chase really only considering the cost of entry and the deals MS are pursuing are aimed at making the entry cost seem appreciably lower than PS4.

I probably blow $150 a month on games so I always consider the likely total investment vs the entry cost and as you say $50 or $100 doesn't seem like much if you look at it that way.

That's beyond pathetic. The Wii U has only outsold the GameCube once (and ONLY once) in it's entire existence? With Mario Kart AND Smash?

Unless Splatoon has the single largest launch of any Nintendo game in the last ten years, we bound to see some pretty severe YOY declines.

The GC was a much better console for its time than the Wii U is now. It was about the same power as its competitors (more powerful than PS2, a bit worse than Xbox), was cheaper than its competitors ($99 by 2003), had much better third party support than the Wii U (like it actually had a good # of titles initially), had Smash Melee at LAUNCH, etc. The Wii U is a console with few releases, underpowered compared to its competitors, hard to port to, a $299 price that's been locked since launch, and most people at launch didn't know what the thing was and absolutely abysmal software sales for EVERYTHING until Mario Kart (at least 1st party software sales are somewhat ok considering the install base now). What do you expect? Nintendo hasn't tried in the slightest this gen w/ the Wii U...

So the Dreamcast being fully discontinued and no longer sold at retail/tracked for 4 months is still not enough for the Wii U to catch up in sales? Goddamn, lol.

Actually, on the F2P side of things, the XB1 library is really rich and interesting (Smite is wonderful and there are Warframe, MMO, Happy Wars and Airmech Arena too).
F2P games are always held back by the mandatory Xbox Live subscription so I don't think they get as many F2P games. I don't think their library is really rich at least not compared to other platforms.

Aligned MSRPs at this point:

Gamecube: $99.99
Dreamcast: $49.99
Wii U: $299.99

Wii U needed a price drop like 2 years ago. It's insane that it's still at launch price, it should really be $199 max by now.

It could be a good year for the Xbox One. Its library is surely helping sales. It is definitely shaping up to be a console bringing the games for gamers. Gears of War can definitely be a big wildcard bringing back a large vibrant community if it sees a retail release, and Joe Montana Football if real can help in the enthusiast sports crowd that makes up a substantial console demographic.

I believe Nintendo's already given up on the possibility of the Wii U ever selling well. Much like Sony & the Vita, they're just trying to maintain profitability on the system while releasing a few games for the target audience. A price drop wouldn't really make much sense at this point, since the likelihood for sales ever getting much higher is pretty low.

Wii U sales will not grow enough to make up for the lost revenue.

I think its a bit disingenuous to ignore the 100 million selling Wii and its impact on unit sales last Gen. Not sure what you're getting at.

I believe I actually got my Dreamcast for free with the purchase of 5 games or something. Heh, probably the best value proposition I've ever seen.

People bought bloodborne early cuz of reviews....returned it after dying 30x before cleric beast. Told all their casual friends it's hard as fuck = no more charting.
According to current trophy statistics 73.9% of players beat the Cleric Beast, and 69.4% beat Father Gascoigne.

First off, congratulations Microsoft on the win.

Secondly, the NPD win IMO has more to do with pricing than actual system preference. Microsoft is consistently offering incredible bundles, trade in values, and scorched earth "promotions" - it's hard to not want to get in on one. Yes, Sony did one in March for Bloodborne, but the $175 trade in for April is nothing short of Black Friday material. Result? A win for the consumer.

If I were Microsoft, I'd outprice and out promotion Sony throughout the year. I'm sure they know this. The Cowboom deal today for a $209.00 Xbox One is a prime example of just how bloody this battle can get.

If I were Sony, I'd stay the course, and mantain profit margins. It's not worth crying over 10k worth of milk. However, they need to put all options on the table for a Fall promotion. They have a pretty big risk of losing their gain in North America if they play too safe.
I know this has been said many times before and whatnot but it's pretty damn laughable just how much MS has had to cut the XBO's price in only 1 1/2 years to get respectable performance in its two strongest territories. The value degradation the XBO has suffered is unlike almost any other console in the industry' history and that isn't something to be very proud of IMHO.

The problem is, the Wii sold console to a millions of people that weren't gamers, but failed to convert them into repeat customers. I have several non-gamer friends with Wii's, but none of them stuck with the hobby. I had a Wii, but it mostly gathered dust.

The Wii created an illusion of a larger market that was never going to be there for this gen. It's the story of why the Wii U is a complete failure, and why those sales haven't, and won't, increase the market size for the Microsoft and Sony. The sales Nintendo failed to get were not to people that would buy other consoles. They were to people that just spent their entertainment dollars elsewhere.

I disagree x1 had crazy Trade-in deals in April. I mean free games, controller, and a free year of live. Yet only managed to beat ps4 by 13k. If those same types of deals aren't available in may, I'm nearly certain ps4 will win may.

We are in agreement. I was lauding the acknowledgement of Wii sales to explain why last Gen sold faster out the gate than this one. Because XBO and PS4 are selling better than their predecessors.
