Not their games division, they are in the red I bet due to the massive discounts they have to give out and free games.

The digital front could've helped with revenue. More people were on Xbox Live in November than any other month previously, so XBL Gold must've done great as well.

It's pretty interesting how Vita despite being completely dead in west managed to still ship 700k units last quarter (more than WiiU). Japan alone really doesn't explain it as it's not exactly doing that well there either. Rest of Asia buying Vitas too?

I doubt it recouped the massive loss each console was being sold at as well as the 3 games they were giving out almost the entire time.

No I think they just lowering the profit margin for the console. But larger sales will cover that.

If there is any profit margin on the hardware now...

Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.
It was the #1 packaged PC title.

Right, and sitting in front of them collecting all those bills are the advertising firms, networks, and retailers MS utilized to promote the Xone in November.

I don't think so.

Yep.

You were referring to their hemorrhaging money with these XB1 prices/bundles, right?

Its funny how people just want to speculate things. Have a closer look at the NPD chart of JUST this month. You see whats on the top of the list? That COD on Xbox 360. Almost 10 year old hardware still prints money. All those XBL Gold still brings money for MS.

Thats what comes down to at the end. Its the eco system people going to invest in for next decade. Counting 20-40$ loss doesnt mean much when you look at the long term profit for each console sold.

Seriously...there's so much salt in this thread that you could use it to grit the roads for the entire Western Hemisphere.

I mean, you guys seem really really concerned about Microsoft's financial well being. Haemorrhaging money? Microsoft? Its the last company you need to worry about, especially when comparing it to Sony.

It was a very aggressive Xmas marketing push and it worked. It really did and it gives MS a platform to build momentum in the coming months. This is precisely what Microsoft needed to do.

But I suspect that the vast majority of dismissive posts on here are a result of excessive sodium chloride deposits residing within people.

For all the gloom and doom we heard, for all the noise about how this was Dreamcast 2.0, MS really seem to be doing well getting those consoles in people's homes. Its the long-term game folks.

Not for a large company like Microsoft who has to prove to their investors that keeping the game division is a smart move. There has been rumblings for years now that they are pushing to have it spun off or shut down altogether since its the weakest part of the company. The game division has to show that its healthy and it's not doing a good job at that.

I was just saying all the promotion they did was expensive. This is a fact. But it also got them back in the race. Great for them.

As for the old gen, Sony has clearly moved on from promoting and pushing the PS3, while Microsoft seems to have a plan in place to keep the X360 going a while longer. Smart decisions by both, really.

Investor rumblings are meaningless.

Xbox has been around for nearly for nearly 13 years.

Investors have had ample opportunity to nix it, yet they haven't because simply don't care.

Nadella has recently doubled down on the brand as well.

Does that include the VitaTV? Or Sold to consumers at that? It is not like the thing is flying off shelves in Japan either

Indeed, going by the stock price and overall revenues no one gives a shit. If MS were in trouble overall it would be different but right now it's a minor inconvenience at worst.

$397 (if we minus the Kinect cost) as street price for the parts.
But they are console manufacture, they buy in huge bulks, so they'd get much better treatment. So that's 10-20% bulk discounts if not more. Added with the fact those prices from 2013 and we are now at the end of 2014, so everything goes down another 10-20%.

So the total cost in 2014 could be $250.

Plus don't forget, the users gonna buy $50 yearly gold subscription.
And add their profit margin from game sales (as far as we know its 30% for digital games).

So if an average gamer buys 5 games a year at $60 and have an active gold subscription. They would profit $150 a year.
$750 if attached for a minimum of 5 years.
All on top of the $329 console price.

....I guess this is the GIF to use to annoy people it would seem. lol

Anyhoo, this is kind a side thing, but since it's a sales thread, if you're going to say a number, don't say the wrong one cause then people get confused.

Like: PS4 wasn't ~800k. 3DS wasn't 550k. Wii U wasn't ~220k, etc.
It's in the ballpark, but if better numbers exist, use them, so people don't get misled.

Was the GC really turning a profit when being sold at $99? That seems odd to me. The GC itself, not Nintendo.

Wow, X1 sold more than Wii U and PS4. Sheesh.
Or they could be like X1 > PS4 + Vita + Wii U + Wii + lol.
How much did the PS3 do?

And since when was Arrow like "the show"? So many spoilery GIFs.

And this was after the Mojang games purchase. Life is good for Phil.

Why does Xbox only seem to do well in the US and UK?

I believe they are key regions for MS. they pour resources into these countries, and typically their consoles have benefited from games being made from there. 360 controlled both and was able to hold its own against Sony whilst being a territory down, which is quite impressive.

Don't know how shareholders are okay with this.

Shareholders/analysts care more about revenue figures.

And tbh software unit sales is kind of an old fashioned metric to judge companies by these days. If look at recent financial reports, you will see that a good amount of these companies sales comes from sources that's not packaged games/full-game donwloads

Sony also said recently they are moving away from the software unit sales metric and will focus on ARPPU instead.

SCEI is moving away from the generic software/hardware tie ratio as a core business success metric, and instead looking at average revenue per paying user.

And yet, like for Zune, if they decide it's becoming meaningless as the "Living room Set Top box" cornerstone is becoming irrelevant, they'll drop it like an old sock.

Same thing for Sony you'll note, except that Sony is a hardware company first, and that alongside TVs and video players (and a TV service, a Film / TV / Video production company), their priorities are very different from MS's.

I'm actually not "worried" about Xbox, as in "disappearing". Not in the relatively short term (10ish years) anyway.

But spinning it out?

Definitely possible.

WTF @ Microsoft not shouting from the rooftops that they sold more XBones than PS4s + Wii Us combined.

Where is J Allard or Don Mattrick when you need them. WTF is Major Nelson doing?

It was probably their only opportunity to do so.

Because they don't want to make fools out of themselves should Sony win December NPD.
