As someone who takes ass very seriously, it's a pleasure to find a thread like this! For me, ass isn't just "nice" or "nasty". Ass is so much more, it's a science. As in, WHY is it nice? WHY is it nasty? Basically, there are five different types of butts on women, and I'll post an example of every one and explain.
1) The small, firm butt
This butt has less fat than the average female ass. That doesn't mean it lacks in shape though. It's a firm butt, because otherwise it wouldn't be shapely. But because of the lack of fat, it's small. Ayumi from X-Blades is a great example of this category:
2) The small, flabby butt
This is similar to category 1 ass, but with a difference, the flabby butt lacks the firmness and the muscles to hold it up and make it look perky. Still, it doesn't have a lot of fat, but what's there is just flab. Xianghua from Soul calibur II has this rare type of ass:

3) The big, fat ass
This is typically the most liked butt, but also the most misunderstood one. The big fat butt is not a huge lump of lard. Rather it's actually quite perky and shapely, but there's so much fat on top of the glute muscles that it defines as a fat ass. This is what category 1 ass would be if you put more fat on it and therefore made it bigger. Vanessa Z. Schneider is a great example of a category 3 ass:
4) The big, fat, flabby ass
This is basically a category 3 ass, but without the perky shape. This is because a big, fat, flabby butt doesn't have enough muscle to keep a great shape. Instead, the shape is a bit saggy and droopy. Samus Aran from Metroid : Zero Mission is the perfect example of this rare type:
5) The big, muscular ass
This is very rare among women because they have less testosterone than men. That means that even if they do their squats, they won't build as much muscle as men do. This is also the reason why ass size on women depends on fat levels, why ass shape depends on firmness levels. The exception of that rule is category 5, which Chun Li is the greatest example of:
All butts fit into these five categories. If the woman's butt is big, it's most likely fat. If it doesn't have a round, perky shape, it's not firm. The key thing when it comes to firmness is to look at overall shape and the creasing lines between the buttocks and thighs - that's always a giveaway.

I see, so a fat ass to you is something unattractive and bad? Me, I define "fat" by the amount of booty flab, whether I find it attractive or not. Regarding Samus, I would say the reason her ass isn't fully curved is because it's droopy and saggy. That is, most of the ass mass has gone a bit south. I don't think it's because of a lack of fat, but too much fat.

Her lower body is so fat in Zero Mission I find it a smidge ridicolous. Look how her thighs rub together compared to the others. But I guess most people here find it hot. My favourite among these is 2014.

I don't like huge fat butts, which I think 2004 is. 2008 is too scrawny, butt 2010 and especially 2014 is perfect. We just have different taste, but from an objective point of view, 2004 is fat (whether you find that hot or not).
Disagree. 2004 is not the ideal shape, but it's clearly defined and perky. 2008 is barely an arse, 2010 and 2014 are perfectly shape but disproportionately small compared to her hips. I mean you can clearly see the backs of her legs/hips on eaither side of her butt, like she swapped butts with a smaller woman.
Well, I think we have vastly different opinions here. Maybe it comes down to how much booty flab a butt can have before being defined as "fat". For people here, it seems, a lot. For me, not a lot. If I'm going to generalize I think this has partly to do with porn and how silcione butts make people think obese is the new normal. But that's just a guess.

Technically, big butts are fat. That's not an opinion. There's a reason they're big, and it's not because of exercise (that helps more with the shape). Then we have the fact that taste change. In the 80s and 90s, the butts that are popular today would be seen as very fat. Maybe J-Lo started the whole trend in the early 00s. Sure, I like what you would call small. I don't call it small, though.

I think you misunderstand me. Having fat in the butt is not the same thing as having a fat butt. That's why I'm talking about size, and how it's so important to determine whether a butt is fat or firm. I stand firm in my statement: big butts are fat, because otherwise they wouldn't be big. Also, big, fat butts are not universally popular. Japanese women for example tend to have small, flat butts.No, technically all butts are fat.
If you had no fat it would be completely flat from the legs to the lower back with a barely hidden anus in the crease between the legs. And yes, I have literally seen a photo of someone who loole like this, it haunts me to this day.
And no, likeing a fuller, bigger backside is not a recent thing with J Lo, it's been a universal human preference throughout history, and often exaggerated in fasion, even back during the most prudish and chaste of times.
Again, you just have unusual taste. It's fine, but don't slag off big butts as 'fat' just because you have an uncommon fetish.
