What's the difference between things like the EVGA SC card just posted and the non-reference models people keep saying to wait for (since it seems like some manufacturers, like EVGA, are already offering those)?

SLI can be frustrating, but beautiful when it works. What is it that you are trying to accomplish by getting a second card?
Man I wish I had this baby now. I'm pretty impatient for my step up when I haven't even opened my 980 FTW that I bought a few weeks ago. Doesn't seem like I can get my money back so just paying for the difference is probably good enough.
I should have ordered 1 while waiting then SLI them when step up comes. Dumb dumb.

At this point is my entire computer a bottleneck and as such would I not really see much of a benefit if I picked one of these cards up?
Or would it still be a decent upgrade? One that I can then transfer over once I build my new comp?
I know I would see some increase in performance, that goes without saying.
What I am really wondering is will my current specs just hold it back so much it is a dumb purchase.

Ok then yeah...SLI makes sense here. What kind of CPU? You should have a decent/nice overclock on your chip otherwise you'll be CPU limited trying to push 2 GPUs.
What about you case? Airflow needs to be as optimal as possible because the top card will get anywhere from 8-10c hotter than the bottom card. If it quickly reaches the temp limit you've set (default at 82c) then both cards will start down clocking relatively quickly.
It's a good idea to test both cards individually in your machine before hooking them up for SLI. That way you can identify if there is an issue before you have everything slotted in the motherboard. The SLI setup is going to be dictated by the card in slot 1. You want to put the worse performing of the two cards here that there's not an issue of the second card not being able to keep up (if you are running an OC on both cards).
Once you're done with all of that THEN you can begin playing

Responsible decision making.Keep in mind that if you are going with the ACX coolers they will dump heat into the case. The reference coolers dump heat out. This is why you see most SLI setups with that variant of cooler.

I have most of the cables tied around the back so that shouldn't be an issue. Feel silly but oh well, one has to learn some how!If you've got good cable management and good airflow, not too big of an issue. I did it way back with SLI 580s Lightning Xtreme Editions in a Corsair 500r. This was before they implemented the boost feature and all of that. It worked well. I did notice a difference in temps when I switched over to the reference blowers though.

1245mhz (+144mhz boosted from evga stock 1101mhz) core clock speeds seem to be about my max comfort zone before adjusting voltages, etc. I've been running stability tests and tend to get driver crashes while alt tabbing, etc. if I push it higher. I can probably play around with the voltages and power/temp targets, but this is good enough for now.

It has been a very long time since I OC'd anything. Last time I OC'd was an Athlon 64 FX Newcastle, so I was still using the BIOS to do the OC. I know nowadays it can be done using Software, for my i7 should I be looking at still doing the BIOS or using Software? Just trying to get an idea of what I should research.
I do not do a whole lot of PC gaming anymore as my GPU definitely is struggling with higher framerates and higher settings, and I would like to remedy this if possible until I build my new build. Also truth be told honestly if I pick this card up now, there is a very good chance I would pick up another to SLi once I do build my new comp, so I am looking for any good excuse, I mean reason.

Fan profile seems to max around 1500rpm and 75/76C temps for me with using the default fan curve. Noise level is pretty respectable. My case fans maxed are much louder than the gpu so I can only hear the gpu noise when I turn everything else down.
Time to test the memory for a little bit.
The evga classified and zotac with the 25% boost will be the highest binned chips with custom PCBs to support more power for overclocking. They will have two 8 pins instead of a 6 and an 8 for power connectors.

I hope my reference cooler SC can get close to this. Man, we are gonna see 1500mhz clocks on the binned chips with voltage tweaking, maybe even higher on water. I supposed this isn't really surprising given the 970s and 980s were hitting 1500 pretty easily, at least on the boost. A 1500 core 1600 boost 980 ti will be so beastly. What are people hitting with their Titan Xs?
