NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti launch/review day - 2017/03/09

Since I'm mainly gaming on my 34" 3440x1440 monitor and the 980 ti was struggling with that res at max settings with some games, I just went ahead and grabbed, after investigating my options, an MSI Gaming X GTX 1080 ti.

It runs so much cooler and silent than my Reference Asus 980 ti. I tested it for coil whine too and it has none. Impressive piece of hardware.

How big was the performance jump? I also have a 980ti with a 3440x1440 arriving today

any of you guys undervolting? seems nvidia boost 3.0 is very generous with voltage. many pascals can do 1.9 to 2ghz with voltages under .95

Well i received my ftw3 and all I gotta say.... Gpus man, gpus

So my situation is definitely better but there's always catches and I hate the whole clock stuff because it's hard to wrap my mind around cards that run better but slower clocks shown. My Aorus as I posted about was stuttering but I had higher clocks, although I couldn't oc much at all. 20 and 300 was about it. But i was 2050 and higher at times but settled around 2038 or 2025ish. Temps mid 50s but that was with fans 100%.

So my ftw3 is a beautiful card, it really is. And the good thing is I'm not getting the micro stutter, I think any small small hiccup is the game. My numbers tho are lower, Temps a bit higher at low 60s. My oc is 50/500, my clock is showing about 2025 and in game 2012. But that's with my voltage up... Is there any harm in pushing 100 voltage? But without my voltage my clocks are 2000 and then gets down to around 1987 which seems so low.

But so far, from what I've experienced it's really smooth locked at 60. Fans are a little louder but I haven't seen the card in game get above 62

The actual performance difference between 2025 and 1987 is absolutely minimal. Just don't care about it and enjoy the card.

Hovering around 2000 mhz seems very normal for these cards (+\- 50mhz). I'd be happy with anything around there. It means you can buy one of these cards purely for noise levels and aesthetics.

I really want a FTW3 but there are none on Amazon :(

Yea, I'm tryin to ignore the number aspect. I think it's just from reading boards and seeing guys put so much emphasis on high clock speeds and sort of, not bragging but in a way bragging I guess lol and it makes you feel you're not getting everything possible for the money.

Picked up the MSI Gaming X and love it. I had the 1080 FTW which was a totally good card but for 3440x1440 the 1080 TI seems to be, finally, the card for this resolution. Everything runs like a dream with basically no compromises. Witcher 3 is up at 90fps at ultra, it's just glorious.

Annnnnd my Strix arrived! Popped it in but haven't booted up Asus Tweak yet. The card is...massive, very heavy, much bigger than the 970.

Patience pays off~

I'd be interested to see if yours has coil whine. The reports of coil whine on the STRIX have been much more than any other of the TIs.

I'm still tempted to try one for how many really want and like this card aside from the coil whine

Also, I come in and my ftw3 is idling like 54 degrees. And it was idling prior around 34.

Honestly I'm about sick of the 1080 Tis already, Im Into Pc gaming and won't ever stop but man every day its sort of something different and I'm just not feeling that. Not that idling is a major deal but up til this point it was idling at like 34 or so.

All my recent cards, 1080, 980 ti, 980, 780 ti etc... We're joys, toss them in and everything were great.. But man I'm getting bugged here

I'm into this stuff but I'm not like into daily problem solving.

Does the FTW3 have auto fan stop? Most of the TI's do and will idle in the 50's as the fans stay off until the temp rises above 60.

It could be, I'll have to check. It's just I didn't change anything since initial install and after checking throughout the day yesterday it was idling in low 30s so that's why I'm just not sure. But yea it could be a fan stop

But see on the subject of being different, was just gaming in prey a bit and the card got to about 72 73 degrees. That seems way to hot for what I'm paying for when the Aorus at least temp wise stayed mid 50s and barely hit 60 at full fan speed which I barely heard.

I wish evga went 2.5 slot with this card

That's weird. I only messed with my FTW3 for a few hours as the fans were just too damn loud. The Zotac is definitely staying in my case as the STRIX has some coil whine and I'd rather not have it even I won't hear it during normal gameplay much.

How is zotac overall as a company, support etc? I actually haven't ever dealt with them so I'm sort of in the dark.

And yea the fans are definitely loud, the thing is the Aorus for instance... It was more the sound of air moving forcefully as opposed to fans making like a higher pitched sound like the ftw3, and I'm not generally bugged by fan noise but it is a bit much and the thing is the card is getting hotter than the Aorus.

Unless prey is just going to do that, Andromeda seemed to level off.

The performance is decent in prey do far, but it was just ok in Andromeda. Overall I'm not blown away by it, I was more impressed with the Temps of the Aorus and fan noise.

The real change with Pascal is higher rated boost clocks combined with GPU Boost 3.0 and Nvidia's voltage control pretty much equalize all cards. We have lost anywhere from 4-8% (rated boost to OC % increase) from Maxwell. Even more if you look at the top 10% of Maxwell cards. Kepler was the peak for overclocking. A 780 Ti would boost to about 1050Mhz and on water with a custom bios OC to about 1350Mhz. (+22%). Maxwell is about +13% and Pascal is a meager 7%.

This is both a blessing, everyone gets 99% peak performance, and a curse, all cards are the same.

I haven't tested my Aoruses in SLI, but last night I had a chance to put one of the units in my rig, and I concur that noise wise, it is very silent.

I have custom fan curve which will dial the fans to 100% once it reached 60 deg C, and I find it difficult to distinguish between the noise from my case fans (there are 7 of them) and the Aorus', unless I have my ear right next to card.

Although admittedly, the case fans I have are the NB-eLoops 140s, and not those noisy Corsair ones :p

I thought the deal with the FTW3 is that they are doing more VRM cooling, so that is reflected in the core temp due to shared heatsink. Regardless, if the performance is there, who cared if it's 60 degrees, 70 degrees? It doesn't matter.

People should worry about performance and noise. Anything else is looking for problems that aren't there.

As I stated the fans are louder than I expected and I'm not typically bothered by fans much, but I've experienced now both aorus and the evga fans and aorus wins in that category. The performance is there but still I personally like seeing cooler achievable Temps on air, seeing that the Aorus I had was staying mid 50s was impressive.

60 degrees is find, when this is pushing its way close to 75 when it's not even hot out yet bugs me. I'd rather have one of these newer cards at 50 to 60 and come summer maybe get close to 70 as opposed to already pushing past 71 and 72 when it's cool.

My house has central air but that room just gets hot, I typically run a window unit also just because I like to be freezing cold but I need a new one.

Either way right now it's mainly noise and then Temps, not where I want for a brand new card of this caliber. If I can spend the same amount of cash and end up with a quieter and cooler card I want it, so I'll see.

Would you say your FTW3 is still quieter than the founder's edition though?
Given the temps and noise you've seen, would you say it's worth the premium over the Founder's Edition?

Huh. Granted there aren't many reviews out yet but I watched the JayzTwoCents review and it seemed to be one of the cooler 1080TIs out there. He had it running a benchmark for 45 minutes and it was hovering around 57-58 (though that was in an open air test bench).

So I was looking to get one just because I figured it'd be quiet and cool. Not that it matters since you can't buy one right now....

I haven't personally heard the FE but knowing how those cards typically are and if I had to guess I'd say they're still louder than the ftw3 easily. But as for worth, nah I'd say stick with a 750 priced card, I'm an evga guy but you're not gaining much here with this card.

Well it's pretty warm in my machine, not sure why but it is. It didn't get to those levels again last night so not sure what that was about but it's definitely not quiet, that's for sure.

Oy. Well I'm seeing a lot more reports of people with FTW3s running hotter than the other cards. Not sure what's up with that.

So now I'm back to trying to decide between the Aorus and the ROG Strix. Damns shame because I figured the EVGA would look the best in my case... albeit with a rather ostentatious font size :p

Can someone tell me will an Asus Strix 1080 Ti fit in my case?

This is what I have....

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139024

This is the card:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XXZBPHZ/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I've heard stories of the 1080Ti, particularly the ones from Asus and EVGA being humungous, so I just wanna make sure it'll fit. I currently have an EVGA 980ti in there.

It should. Your HDD drives are stacked lower than mine. Mine are one stack but go into the ODD slots almost. The Strix is megamassivegiant and barely fits into my case. Was a challenge to get it in! It fits but a plastic part is touching one of my ODD bays, which is thankfully helping to hold it up and prevent the card from sagging. I'll locate my case in my history and edit.

Edit: can't link it on mobile but the case is N82E16811112239 on Newegg.

Still wondering which of the Custom cards is most likely to be the bestest (money be damned).

Anyone got any thoughts on that?

Any of the Hybrid cards. GPU boost 3.0 which controls your clocks, is primarily affected by core temperature. The lower the temperature the more consistent the clocks will be and the higher average FPS you will get. Now the peak clock as in the highest clock you will hit will likely not be much higher but the average clock over time will be marginally higher than air cooled variants. We are only talking less than 10% fps gain here.

Really, more reports of hotter cards? I haven't looked around much yet but that's a shame if so.

Like I said honestly the transition to 1080 ti for me, has not been totally awesome like previous gpus.

If the ftw3 doesn't pan I'm just debating which one to try after, most strix reviews seem really solid, same with zotac and msi. But just not sure.

I think one thing we need to establish is "what is hot" for these cards.

Yes it sounds like FTW3's are running hotter than other after market cards, but they also have physically less heatsink surface area and smaller fans than most other after market 2.5 slot cards.

80's are hot, throttling is at 83. I think mid 70's are expect. My overclock +100 voltage Gaming-X hits 73 on loooonnnngggg gaming runs at 60-65% fan, but its also trapped in an ITX Case. at 100% fan it would stay in low 60's, but I like a silent running PC (and at 60% its fans are dead silent)

I'd still likely return your FTW3, I just want to make sure no one considers 60's to be average temps for a benchmarking 1080ti's with regular fan curves.

MSI Sea Hawk X or EVGA Hybrid probably?

Is the 970 not cutting it these days? Surely you can still do 1080p 60 with most modern titles with some settings tweaks?

Considering I could still do 1080/60 with a 770gtx in most titles with tweeking, I cant imagine a 970 not being good enough right now. Granted some titles like Hitman had to settle for 1080/30, but that was the exception not the rule.

When will the next line of nVidia cards come out? I want to upgrade my 980ti, but if there is a release immenent then I'll just wait.

It's not imminent. Not even close.

But you are in a tricky situation if you're intent on upgrading but want to maximize value. If you go for just a cheap 1080 with the expectation of getting a Volta card, you're not upgrading that much from a 980Ti.

If you go for a 1080Ti, you're spending $700 now and then potentially another $700 around end of year/beginning of 2018. Of course you could sell your Ti when the new cards come out and recoup some of that.

They seem fine. Not any worse than Asus and the like.

When I am playing prey at 144fps my card is very quiet with maxed settings and a custom fan curve of 60% at 60c. I just think the FTW3 is going to be loud no matter what because of its 2 slot design as opposed to 2.5/3.

Any idea when us Android plebs are gonna get the mobile game?

With how long AMD is taking to respond and how it will probably be underwhelming I'd say you are safe for quite a while.

Mine does, can't notice at 60 fps but at 200+ oh boy

Yeah I play on a 144hz monitor and I will always lower some graphical settings to get maximum fps and that card sure does get going.

I was talking about going from the 980ti to the 1080ti, for the record. Still seems it's a good idea to wait though.

Eh it depends, I'm the type where I say if you're even contemplating it then go for it and have fun with the card. By the time whatever is out next there will be a reason to "wait" once again for the next thing, just dive in and enjoy the power. A 1080 to ti isn't a massive jump but a 980 ti to 1080 ti I personally feel is. However the bump I made from 1080 to 1080 ti feels pretty big so far in how 4k runs, so yea a leap from a 980 ti would be pretty decent. I say why wait, enjoy some of the best gaming you can achieve right now.
