NVIDIA just sacrificed their entire lineup so they could sell you a $2000 GPU

Almost everything barring the 5090 will be seeing some of the weakest generational uplifts we've ever witnessed. This was all done to justify the $2000 5090. If the 5080 had actually gotten a significant increase in core count, it would have put it far too close to the 5090 for the $2000 price tag to make sense. 50% faster for 100% more money compared to the 5080 is a bad deal, but you still get the fastest GPU by far. If the 5080 had been faster than the 4090 like it should have, then you'd be looking at a 5090 that's around 20% faster and how do you then justify $2000?

This is NVIDIA continuing the trend of gutting lower tier cards to prop up higher ones. It started at the lower end of the product stack with the RTX 3060 only offering around a 20% improvement over the RTX 2060. This continued with the RTX 4060 being around 15% faster than the 3060. The RTX 4070 suffered the same, offering a modest 20% uplift over the 3070 and it seems it will be the same story with the 5070.

The only cards that have seen substantial improvements every generation have been the absolute top cards. Everything else is sacrificed at the altar to justify their existence. Traditionally, mid-range cards in the x60 and x70 have offered the best bang for your buck, but they're starting to be just as bad as higher products in terms of value which shouldn't happen. There should be a 16K core 20GB 5080 that exceeds the 4090 for $1000, but as said before, it would simply kill the 5090 and NVIDIA is fine offering a pittance for the budget conscious. They don't care about them.

Can you really blame Nvidia for this? Its simply lack of competition. AMD can and should do better but they don't. Look at their recent 9070XT/9070 fiasco.

These generational improvements getting funny at this point:
1080 was matched by 2060 (60 class matching an 80 class is uncomprehensible with Nvidia of today, but this is just 6 years ago)

2080ti was matched by 3070

3090ti was nicely outdone by 4080

5080 is just sad by comparison

With Moore's Law dead, getting better performance is only going to get harder and harder without jacking up prices.

Starting with N2, it's deader than dead.

People said that this stuff is gonna fly off the shelf and there is gonna be shortage but i have my doubts, they really fucked up by making upgrades retroactive for older series of gpus (better for us).
It does seem like they almost had to make the older cards retroactive to keep people from considering AMD.
Now I can just keep my RTX 4070 and not waste my money on AMD. But the 5000 cards are not looking so good anymore.

They pulled this shit with the 40XX series as well, and most people didn’t go for it.

Their other cards rely on A.I software, and aren’t all that powerful for the money.

Only reason I might get a 5090 is so I can sell my 4090 for the best possible price. But yeah this generation sucks, basically no increase in perf/$ or perf/watt.

Silver lining is that even the previous gen cards are getting all the DLSS upgrades except for multi-frame gen (which basically is pointless unless you have a high refresh rate monitor and you can’t even hit 1/3 the max refresh rate without frame gen)

I see these as cards for people upgrading from 20 and 30 series or older. Going from a 3080 to a 5080 would be huge. Leather jacket man really has a pair of balls though, saying the 5070ti is on par with a 4090 was absurd.

Unfortunately I think they will still sell quite well because that audience is nearing Nintendo levels of fanboyism.

Seeing all of these benchmarks is so disappointing despite there having been absolutely no chance I was interested in the first place. There should really be more than 10% uplift without resorting to fake frames. I miss when new GPUs beat the previous gen by a tier (xx70 beating previous gen xx80 for example).

It seems like they always want to short the vram so you have to upgrade again in the near future. That's their trick. You ain't future proofing shit. Especially when improvements are no longer incremental but rather bespoke hardware additions outside of pure raster performance.

Giving you the bare minimum acceptable vram makes sure that your GPU isn't future proof.

5080 has only 16gb of vram. They will not allow you to future proof they want you upgrading these cards each cycle. You wonder why people like console gaming.

Nvidia price their shit so there is no room for disruption, 750mm2 of silicon is like a Threadripper which costs $5000, without all ram and stuffs, it is kinda a steal if you think about it.

unfortunately my 3080 is hopeless with my monitor and I will still have to buy a 5080. It is the best performance I can get without putting a friggin heater in my case.... (yep I draw the line at the power consumption rather than the price for the 5090)

Meanwhile, curious about if the SOC STRIX devices will outperform laptop 5080s then, for a fraction of the price. They already show ~20-50% improvements over the laptop 4070, which is a pretty big feat for integrated graphics on it's own, beating dedicated GPUs.

And that's an integrated graphics chip, versus an actual dedicated GPU card that eats much more power.

A fucking software update lol

FYI, not sure if anyone saw it but someone is working on enabling multigen frames on a 4080. There's a video on YouTube
Honest to buddha, i don't even wanna use it even if they unlock it for my 4080.

Dlls perf looking better than old quality mode should have been the real hook but now everyone can do it.

Yeah, after being massively unimpressed with the 50 series, I'm delaying my planned rebuild from late summer to next year. I'll reassess if/when the super/ti variants arrive. I'd prefer a 5080ti with 24GB to replace the 3090, but we'll see.

This transformer model DLSS allowing us to further reduce initial render resolution has given my machine a much needed perf uplift for basically the same visual quality to my aging eyes. If they also release a FG solution to the 30 series I'll be golden for another year to 18 months.

This is my long overdue upgrade year. I'm expecting big things from swapping my 2080ti for a 5090ti. Just watching this early shit show with interest.

Just small correction, nvidia's rtx 5090 will be very likely sold at 3k usd+ streetprice in the US, outside the US many non founders cards will likely start close to 4k usd, ofc everything will still fly of the shelves, at that pricepoint there is no price sensitive customers, all u need is card to be BiS which 5090 is w/o any doubt ;)

I really don't know what you all have. Nvidia communicated that they will take that route, they tested your wallets with the last gen, and according to 4090 sales they made the right decision and now they do it again. Nobody else to blame than their loyal customers.

Don't buy it and they won't do that shorty tactics.

And by the way, games are not more fun because of shiny graphicss, games are fun because of the concepts. People these days totally forgot that.

Also, the performance uplift since the 3000 gen is tiny. If those old GPUs had more memory they could still deliver really good performance. Instead we just got minor increases in performance and not even on the same price point but for more money.

But I must say, I find it really strange that they don't wanted $4k for the 5090. The guys who buy this can also afford that without a problem.

As am I second guessing it as well

May ride out this gen with this 4080s or buy one of the 4090 prebuilts that are left over

These are my two systems:

Had the 4080 since launch and got the 4090 about 3 months after launch.

I'm gucci, will wait for the 6xxx series.

HUB did a really great deep dive into multi frame generation. Here’s their recommendation when it makes sense to use frame gen:

WwKRESJ.jpeg

So yeah if you have a 250 Hz+ monitor, and you’re running a game at 100+ FPS, and that’s still not smooth enough for you, and you’re willing to tolerate visual artifacts and higher latency in exchange for higher output framerate…. Then multi frame generation is a really killer feature.
