Nvidia Kepler - Geforce GTX680 Thread - Now with reviews

Sound like I timed the build of my new system well.

On the subject, I could use recommendations for hardware. It's been a couple of years since I built a PC.

You mean that the GK104 price wasnt fixed? :lol

For all we know, Nvidia could have simply changed their pricing strategy.

They probably did. Still his track record on Kepler has been terrible. Just last week he had two articles about the paper launch that was supposed to happen yesterday.

$550 msrp for this gens 2nd ( or even 3rd? ) from the top gpu?

I really hope the high end gpu market crashes and burns. We need a reboot please.

Charlie's retardedness now extends to Apple speculation.

Since he's usually a PC retard Apple sites don't realize what a fucking moron he is and he's being parroted all over the usual Apple sites.

The original title was based on the assumption of GK104 being on 7970 level while launching for $299-399.
Which it could have been at that point if nVidia wanted to market it as the 670 at that point.
Poor competition from AMD in addition to poor yields could have made them reconsider their pricing.

I'm coming from an 4870 1gb version. I'd love to get my hands on Nvidia's flagship. Whenever it releases. 8(
No matter how good or fast the 680 turns out to be the 670 or 670Ti will be way better value.
That's what I'm eyeing. Even a fast 660Ti I'll take.

If it's just ~about parity I might not even buy. All I can hope is that GK104 clocks some ridiculous amount on the lower end.

I completely see what you're saying it's just I plan on going as fast as I can since it's been about 6 years since I upgraded.

I keep telling people to buy me hardware, but they don't do it!

I have a free screen for you thats scratched, small, bad resolution and you have to pick it up.

I'm thinking dual 680s with 1080p 3D moving to 3x1080p 3D with 3x 680s.

That or travel asia for like 2 months.....

Geez, that'd be frekin awesome.

Edit: I thought the 680 was based on the Gk110 core? That's a shame.

do you know what is good about this? if UE4 runs on this shit then we have nothing to worry about. You will be able to buy a card in 2014 and start maxing out console games. And you will be able to play them on 680 at decent framerates.

Nope. GK104 is now the GTX 680 apparently.
Between some possible factors:
AMD 7xxx series performance boost for cost is abysmal
nVidia bungled GK110
Kepler is so amazing anyway the the mid range card can compete with AMD's flagship
so is the GTX 680 worth it? should i wait a bit longer for the faster gfx cards?
Depends. A 7970 or 680 is a pretty darn fast card. You'd be waiting at least 2 months (probably 3-4) for GK110 if it's even needed.
Nobody seems to have a good $ 250-300 card, disappointing.
Good value is buying previous generation cards used.

I can't imagine Unreal not scaling incredibly well across all platforms. That's like saying a GTX480 might have trouble today.

Used isn't that great a value. Sold both my 480gtx's used on eBay for 220/215 respectively and they were both out of warranty. I'd say I personally wouldn't pay over 140 for a used 480gtx.

Oh and the 480gtx does have trouble today just not at low resolutions.

Ebay is more of a seller's market a lot of the time.

Slickdeals posted a newegg deal a number of days ago for an EVGA GTX 480 for 209.99 with free shipping (after 40 instant rebate). I sometimes feel hints of guilt selling old parts on there because they pay way too much.

True, my frame of reference is 1080, not higher.

In hindsight, it makes the failure of Larrabee sting all the more. Imagine if it had turned out? We'd have 3 companies fighting it out and engaged in competitive pricing.
The good part about this is Intel doesn't seem to have production issues because it's not outsourcing. (Right?).

I mean Intel has mad money, I'd love to see them just come in and undercut everyone once they get some people to make drivers.

Well this sucks alot, for from what we know now will the Gk110 still be single GPU? If is it possible when it releases it will take the $550 slot from the GTX 680 and it will get a price drop? Surely they can't be thinking of charging more then $550 for a non dual GPU card.

If it's 40% faster they can charge whatever they want.

GK104 will have a dual card version coming 'soon'. GK110 should be single card.

Yeah, and AMD will likely launch two faster cards before GK110 launches. It's a never-ending game. They've got us by the balls on pricepoint.

Just give me a $200-$300 card with 2-3x the performance of an OC'ed 1GB 460 please. I don't really understand the fixation on the $600 cards from the manufacturers, I was under the impression the $200-$300 segment accounted for the vast majority of their revenues and profits in the dedicated desktop space.

Right, not saying it is, just what/if.

It's nice to want things.
I want this too

Haha, that's exactly what I want too. I don't need really crazy performance, but the 460 can strain JUST enough to be annoying at reasonable settings @ 1080p, so I'd like a new card.

midrange cards will come soon enough. top range most will spend is between $200-$300... $350 is like high end for most

Kind of true but I really wanted to jump from my mid range 460 to some next-gen 570 equivalent (mainly for the better power consumption). 570 still goes for €250 used, not that great considering that 580s are being sold for €300.
