Nvidia Kepler - Geforce GTX680 Thread - Now with reviews

Right now, for me the 680's are just amazing and it is good to see more users getting them here that can speak about them. A little over 2 weeks ago we had people saying that they run too hot, are too loud etc...and now that more of "us" gaffers have them, it seems we all agree that they are pretty amazing, dispense heat very well and are no where as loud as some of the previous cards.

What does this mean?

WOW Boob that is pretty damn good!!! The temp is really good as well. I guess, you are yet another user that can speak about how well the 680 cooler is even if it is a reference cooler.

The reference cooler is amazing. I can only imagine how cold this damn thing would run with an aftermarket cooler. Wow.

When they come back in stock I may scoop one up. But really the performance you're reporting is making me that much more excited for the "true" successor to the 580 later this year.

That muthafucker must be a beast

It truly is. It OC's like crazy (almost 300 mhz more than my 570, and my 570 was one of the highest clocking 570's on air in the world), runs cold as hell, and uses almost no power. You will be pleased.

You using a custom fan profile yet?

Funny that you are loving it and now want a second one....hahaha

Order yourself a high-flow bracket from Evga, you will be able to shave another 2-3c off your heat with the hfb.

Yeah, I'm using a custom fan profile. I ramp it up to 85% once it hits 70c so that I can keep the temps down Funny thing is, I still can't hear the fan, whereas my 570's would be very noticeable.

I don't think I want to order the high flow bracket, because if I were to go to those lengths, I'd just grab a custom cooler for $50. I'm pretty happy with it the way it is.

And yeah, I'm seriously considering a second one, even though I'll have to go trade in my mobo at Microcenter and reinstall the CPU, it'd be worth it. Two GTX 680's would honestly rape any game in the ass.

And from there, I can just grab GK110 later this year or a 8970, whichever is faster. Best part is, GTX 680's should hold their value extremely well over the next 6 months.

What does this mean?

When the cards first came out and there were not very many users that had them here, we had alot of people coming into the thread stating opposite of what people that actually had the cards. For example, I mentioned several times on how much quietter the 680's are and how heat and the reference cooler is one of the better ones for a reference cooler...we then had people claiming that was not the case, but yet the people that actually physically had them were stating that they were pretty quiet and run pretty cool.

My comment about more of "us" gaffers getting cards is that it is apparent in this thread that more gaffers are getting the cards and claiming the same thing that those of us were saying weeks ago.

So how long do these "gens" last? I bought my 580 in August, but I think it had been out since 2010. The 700 series would be a couple of years from now?

Saw this straight raw setup at Overclock.net:

fuuuuuuu

im such a nerd lol

Well Crysis 2 is the biggest name on your list and dont most people think it's the worst game to come out in the last ten years (recent crytek threads say yes).

Not all that compelling, why even list such a terrible game? Syndicate got similarly slammed and I've never heard of "Rochard".

That was a list of games I thought up in 20 seconds. There are easily dozens more. Your arguments are neither compelling nor dismissive of the truth, specialguy.

Last gen lasted so long because of the difficulty of switching to 28nm. 700 series is 6-12 months away depending on how Nvidia wants to brand the bigger Kepler cards. Maxwell should be late '13-early '14, and Maxwell will most likely be 8xx-9xx series.

More GTX 680 OC benchmarks... Just Cause 2

Maxed out EVERYTHING
including CUDA water simulation and bokeh filter
32x CSAA and 8x Transparency Supersampling AA

Dark Tower benchmark: 66.62 avg FPS
Desert Sunrise benchmark: 78.73 avg FPS
Concrete Jungle benchmark (toughest one): 51.97 FPS

Incredible. Time to turn on SGSSAA and see if it can handle it.

The reference cooler is amazing. I can only imagine how cold this damn thing would run with an aftermarket cooler. Wow.

The AC Twin Turbo II definitely makes my 680 cooler and MUCH quieter, but don't expect better OC results from the lower temps. The reference coolers pretty much cover the extent of the 680's overclocking capabilities over air.

So yeah, I wouldn't recommend aftermarket coolers for the reference 680 unless one has the money to blow and/or if the noise is a serious issue.

Dennis and BP currently banned? Wow...that kind of sucks. I know BP can get a little heated on some stuff, but I never read anything that would cause a ban. I mean both him and Dennis contribute alot to this forum...I know almost everyone enjoys Dennis's screen shots as he manages to take some of the best and BP is our resident tweaker (as in gaming tweaker) and I know my games have run and look better using some of those tweaks.

I mean I am all for a temp ban if they deserve it, but still sucks. Wanted to ask BP some questions now that he has a 680...but oh well they can wait.

I think it is that slaughterhouse of a thread where half of PC GAF got banned:

How many console gamers would go PC if...

How long do they banned for? I never been banned, so unsure how it all works out. I know some come back from the grave, but others are perma banned or am I wrong?

If Haz and few others in the PC Building Thread get banned all of us noobish builders are completely screwed if we need help! lol

I'm sure this might have been brought up, and apologies for not reading through the forum, but has there been any discussions on a 650, or 660TI hitting the market?

I'm ready to pull the trigger on a new PC, this is the last piece of the puzzle.

EDIT:

DennisK4 was banned? Wow, I'm going to miss his PC shots.

Not sure on dates, but there are rumors of a 670, 660 etc. that will be coming out. I think the big issue is the 28mm process and that they are having a hard time getting good yeilds on quality gpu's...but I think I read "soon" for the lower end versions of the 680.

yeah dude he's pretty bad

crashing jets on the runway....trying to take off

This may not be the most appropriate, but still ot as I got my 680 on Friday and then d/l'd BF3 immediately after. But is there a GAF server or something to that extent? My 680 has solidified my choice for PC gaming as the game looks incredible online at 1080p @ 60 fps. Admittedly I am not great but I am willing to learn and am a team player.

Also, I'd like to pour 1 out for Boob. I enjoyed his posts. It was funny watching him progressively get excited about the 680 and then when he got it, post his impressions.

Very impressed so far in BF3

2500k+
my old card- AMD 6990 in BF3 maxed at 2560x1440- 20-35fps

GTX 680 maxed at 2560x1440 45-60fps

RIP TO BP101

There is one...but nobody ever plays on it.

I just got a EVGA GTX680 Superclocked+ in today to replace my 570. I was able to use $100+ in Amazon credit toward it, and I hope to sell my 570 for at least $200, so I figured why the hell not.

I'm still working on some tweaking, but with an initial dirty OC I got P9160 in 3DMark11. I have no idea how this compares to other 680s though.

So now that gaffers have the 680 and actually played games using them, how is the GPU Boost feature?

I actually like it so far. When I play The Darkness II the card automatically downclocks to around 600-700Mhz and still provides 120FPS solid. Then when I fire up BF3 it clocks all the way up to around 1200 with no issue. It's honestly a pretty nice feature.

Superclocked is out already? Your score is lower than Boobs, what's your CPU?

Yesterday was the day the Palit 4GB cards were slated for release according to Overclockers.co.uk, I check and check, release date change to "Overdue" Man I feel it's going to be a bitch to find two 680 4GB that are two slot designs like the KFA2 before the 685 arrives :P

I think they were released on Monday. I'm running an i7 920 at 3.8Ghz. I ran the Heaven benchmark after 3DMark and my score was comparable or slightly better to the score on 680 reviews, so there's a good chance my CPU is limiting my 3DMark score.

Yeah, I didn't get that shipping option. It was less for me but still sort of ridiculous. I called newegg and have them calling me back about it.
