NX Gamer: PS5 Pro - Where will it excel? | Hardware Preview

The PS5 Pro is mere weeks away, we all have our pre-orders placed, do not mention the 30th Anniversary edition. Limited edition or not, no hardware is worth anything without stuff to play on it and what it offers. Before the console drops and reviews come out, I wanted to take a look into the digital future and just what it could offer, how it may run many current & future games, and just how it may push the PC market.

I mean if you can't come up with $700 over the course of 18 months (existence of Pro was known since late 2022), you might have other things to consider financially.

It’s not about the money, it’s about value and seeing that the thing is still available to preorder everywhere, people don’t see value there.

Thank you for worrying about my finances tho 😘

I have mine preordered, I already gave mi PS5 to my 17yo, but honestly I don’t expect shit from it, so if it does the bare minimum, I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Well first they barely showed Alan Wake 2 at 60fps. But even the 30fps improvements are very limited and unconvincing from what they showed.

For Horizon it's their unwilliness to use any custom techniques present on Pro, and not even on PS5 (they never used ID buffer in their engine because it would have broken compatibility with PS4 and surely PC). They are making a game to be easily compatible with compute hardware broadly available on PC to make PS5 -> PC ports easier.

After 6-7 years of owning a PS5 devkit they still don't do nothing particular on this console (nor they haven't utilized any specific features from PS4 Pro) and it's the same for PS5 Pro. Not RDNA4 RT, no PSSR, just relying on additionnal 45% rendering power. Their engine is stuck in the PS4 era and it's showing notably with the very average and unrealistic lighting.

Man, stock issues for new consoles during the pandemic have truly made a lot of people to believe that this is somehow a bad thing.

Yeah and still got no disc drive to play all my physical games on.

My retailer is already waiting over a month for new disc drives and Sony can't even provide a delivery date. 🤦😑🤮
Just got my disc drive delivered yesterday from Walmart and I ordered it earlier yesterday.

- He performed tests with a 6800XT and a 5600X to compare with the PS5 Pro and the Pro (based on his early testing) is running better, but wants to wait until the Pro is finally released to see if this gap shrinks or widens.
- Points out that PC and console specs aren't easily transferable.
- Would set expectations closer to an R600X matched up with a 7800XT and RTX 4070 Super GPU in many games and the Ray Tracing above any AMD GPU on the market, specifically in first-party titles

Dragon's Dogma 2

PS5 Pro - 54 - FPS
6800/R600X - 41 FPS

4070 Super is 29% better than the 6800
7800 XT is 19% better than the 6800

This is based on TechPowerUp specs/

It seems like many PC comparisons with the PS5 Pro circulating online are not taking into consideration the CPU limintations. I think NX Gamer is comparing the RTX 4070 Super to the PS5 Pro without Ray Tracing.

Congratulations, you now know how everyone feels about high end PC gaming. $100 for each fps.

Don't forget that Dragon's Dogma 2 is using RTAO on PS5 Pro. And NXgamer noticed no odd RTAO artefacts there. 54 vs 41 is 31% better.

More is needed to see of course. But it looks promising and inline with the 4070 level of performance with RT.

That 4070 Super prediction of his is pretty optimistic. Maybe in a handful of Sony first party games, but I doubt the far majority would reach that. None of the third party games shown so far have reached that kind of performance.

It's wishful thinking . Other than that his PC hardware was always performing not so great and he always tried to push narrative of very powerful PS5 compared to PC. I don't think his findings were ever in line with DF tests.
