NYC GAF |OT| We get around in a hole in the ground

are you referring to Ichiban Ramen? the article says no reservations... bummer =/

but i'm sure i'll have a chance to grab some ramen at some point.

Ha, I confused two different posts. Ignore my post!

Re: the ramen spot, no thanks. I won't wait that long anymore. Years ago, there were very, very few ramen spots in NYC. Now there are a ton of great spots. I can't wait in line for hours.

no worries, anytime in the future if you happen to be on the NJ side man! not expecting =)

good luck on your date stud boy =)
Sorry to disappoint guys but the date never happened. I didn't feel like setting up any plans with the girl in question and stopped texting her once she told me that she works overnight (she's a nurse) and sleeps from 8:30am-4:00pm. I have no desire to text her with plans until next week at best.

To be honest, I'm still a bit burned out by last month's short-lived fling, still recovering from post-NYCC blues, and money is going to be super tight after I pay off my credit bill tomorrow/manage to sell off some stuff I bought at NYCC on eBay. A girl I stopped replying to lurked on my OKC profile on Monday so I might rekindle that and exchange numbers. Not feeling too motivated since I'm starting to find it a chore again so I'm focusing on myself a bit. =/

Plus it also doesn't help that an aunt arrived from the Dominican Republic on Monday and is staying in my brother's room for a month while he stays in mines and sleeps on the bottom bunk.

However I did go to Jersey this past weekend and it turns out that my brother is only a few blocks away from a gas station, a few restaurants, and some kind of supermarket. Checked out Glen Rock with my cousins which has....a rock in the center of the town. Westfield Mall/ Garden State Plaza hasn't changed one bit so it was cool to see that again.

So a Bareburger opened up near me (14th St and 6th Ave). Never tried it before but I hear its a solid burger. Any good burger joints in the West Village area to recommend? Amazing that I have lived in the Village for almost a year and barely explored the food choices.
Only went to Bare Burger once during a GAF meet up about four years ago to the one that's on 33rd and 3rd. Had the boar burger with blue cheese and wasn't impressed since I remember stating that it remind me of eating Vicks Vaporub. I suppose I'll need to go back and try one of the more pricier exotic burgers such as bison or ostrich one of these days.

Can't really think of anything around there that stands out. I went to the diner that's across the street from the Chase near the W 4th St station a few months ago and it was solid. There's some damn damn good bars around there have good pub food including The Half Pint.
Heh, saw a Gaffer on the Manhattan bound 7 Train this morning. Couldnt see what thread he was reading (unless I got uncomfortably close) but I did see a bunch of avatars and names I recognized. Small world.

Bareburger rules. I add the duck bacon to every burger I get there. So good.
A handful of GAF members who live in Flushing come to mind; GK86, jasonng, and a banned GAF member by the name of DoktorEvil. What did he look like if you remember?

Not exactly the same but I saw a dude playing the Pokemon Sun/Moon demo on the L this morning.

edit: also this (over?)hyped ramen place opens today: http://ny.eater.com/2016/10/19/13330962/ichiran-nyc-opens-wait

In the booths, diners write down their orders instead of speaking verbally, and when they’re ready to order, they press a button and pass the sheet instead of interacting with a server. While it’s possible to talk to other people in the booths, it’s discouraged.

....

They have a “15 second standard” — a goal to serve each bowl of ramen within 15 seconds of ordering. So although the line is hundreds long, it’s possible that it will move relatively quickly.
....

For people who don’t want to experience Ichiran as a solo diner, the Bushwick restaurant also has a separate area for a more traditional dining experience with servers and tables.

It sounds like the Alamo Drafthouse of ramen. Not sure if it's worth the trek just for a 20 dollar bowl of ramen but I'll throw the place into the OP for future reference. I feel like this would be a good place to hit up for a mini GAF meet up in the near future. While I like that they don't charge tip, they compensate by charging 2-5 bucks for extra stuff.

On another note, if anyone is interested in volunteering for it, the Food Film Festival starts tomorrow and runs until Sunday. I signed up to volunteer but haven't picked my shifts yet. It's basically a food porn festival where everything attendees see on the screen, they can eat as it will be served. The best part is that it's in the AMC theatre in Times Square.

There's also a good possibility that I'm going to participate at this year's Halloween Parade for the first time ever. One of my friends is helping create puppet sas part of a group that puts on a show every year at the parade so I'm going help man one of them.

I think I have a double photoshoot on Saturday when it's supposed to be in it's 50's.

Hahaha, pick your poison: hauling your photography equipment in cooler chill when the air is dry or hauling said equipment when it's warmer but humidity is also high? You don't appreciate something until it's gone especially once fall daylight savings time kicks in. Although I admittedly did not go out all day yesterday. Will go hit the gym in a few minutes.

Updated one of the sections in the OP with the new Bushwick ramen place and the Alama Drafthouse Brooklyn for future reference. Here's a New York Times article that was published on it yesterday: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/19/movies/alamo-drafthouse-brooklyn-opening.html

Tall white dude with beard and glasses. I think he was wearing a plaid shirt? I feel like I just described 50% of Williamsburg hah.

Random Gaf member, if you read this, I was the ridiculously handsome brown dude in gym clothes.

Oh I totally forgot the demo was out. Good looks.

Wouldn't be the first time I've frozen my nuts off during a shoot. I think I did a shoot for 90 minutes in January when it was like sub 40.

Hahaha, more like 70%! That's not much of a clue to go on. And since this thread is in OT-Community, the chances of him seeing this thread are pretty slim. You should have hollered Believe to see what happened. Maybe you'll run into him again.

Funny enough, whenever I wear a GAF shirt and it's not blocked by my bag, I usually get compliments on it. I had conversation with a GAF lurker 2 years ago when I was on my way to Union Square for the Playstation E3 Experience with my bro while wearing a GAF shirt. I never asked for his name.

Sweet Jesus! You work hard for that money to earn your keep. Shooting with cold hands is no joke!
Wait is Phil DoktorEvil?
Nah, Phil was Emily Chu. DoktorEvil was some other dude I hang out with once in a while. He got perma banned for shit posting in a David Cage thread.

My building power generator blew. Whole building has no power. I can't even get my car out bc the garage doors don't have power. Thankfully the weather is warm so I can just chill outdoor seating at a nearby Starbucks.

Is that who I met?
Indeed that was. Whenever a thread on minimalism is brought up, his name gets mentioned.
What money? I'm dedicated to my craft. Granted in was more of a greenhorn then.
Just like any art. I fudged up my mirrorless camera after I accidentally spilled water on it a few months ago causing it to short circuit. I imagine it's going to cost more to fix it than to get a new one so more than likely going to sell it for parts.

What camera was it? Depending on how old it might not be that bad to find a newer one on ebay.

It's a Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3 which is about 4 years old now. It's one of those cameras that has a touch screen only, no viewfinder from which to shoot pictures from. Not much of a camera geek, but the pictures got the job done and were a step up from my previous camera, an Olympus 565-UZ which is out of commission. I was the only person in my Digital Photography class shooting with a mirrorless camera since everyone else was either using Nikons, Canons, or film cameras.

Camera tech has come such a long way that you did yourself a favor by dropping water on it.

Hey I'm currently at the UWS visiting until Sunday morning; I'm hoping to order in pizza tonight. Can anyone recommend a good place that delivers? No need to set a price limit, I just want a quality dinner and some good NYC pizza

I hear there's a decent place near Times Square that does delivery.

To be fair I was hammered and messed up my 3DS in the same incident. Nonetheless I suppose I should I should sell the camera any way.
Why is this?
He left a digital breadcrumb trail with his alt accounts and kept mentioning how he leads a minimalist lifestyle. That was what we call shooting oneself in the foot since it was funny how he got banned for good.

Oh man, The Food Film Festival is so good. Get free food and alcohol for volunteering so I'm in heaven. Can't complain at all since it's the best of both worlds. Will be back tomorrow after working some League of Legends event at MSG Pavilion in the morning. I'm already dead since it's gonna be a long day.

Last day in NYC.

Def going to consider the area for my MBA. Morningside was chill. The city is extremely dirty lol didn't expect that. Jacob's Pickles is amazing and you can easily share one entree. Midtown is yuck. Saks 5th is yuck. Tribeca and UWS is nice.

It's crazy how much rent is for a non-aesthetically pleasing place. The size is comparable to other cities but wow if I'm dropping 3.5k here I can't even get a nice looking building in most areas. So many old buildings.

Also the Whole Foods by UWS was weak sauce.

Edit: New York has some of the best coffee around if you know what I mean.

Gotta love weekend trains. What was supposed to be a 25 minute train ride to Times Square has turned into a nightmare. No A trains running uptown and downtown because of "an investigation" at 145th street and I was slated to be in to volunteer by 5pm. It's been a journey as I had to walk 3 blocks over to take the 2 train.

I hate the shit out of weekend subway service.

So I got a second round interview at a startup. They are flying me out to San Francisco tomorrow. So maybe not going to be staying in NYC.

Doktorevil is a cool guy. What's good tho? When are people hanging out? I need friends who aren't girls I sleep with.
I'm willing to entertain the idea of doing something next Saturday since I don't have anything planned at the moment. I'm intending on keeping it cheap because I'm on a tight budget for the rest of the month.

Sold some stuff on eBay today and will put more things up for sale today. It feels nice to be on a break from dating and not have to worry about moving things around. Although I'm getting the itch again as the weather gets colder so I'll send a few messages out but be deliberate.

Same here. Its garbage.
Even though we complain all complain about how bad weekend trains are, it's a price that we pay for having a 24/7 subway system. People from other cities/countries always remind me that we should appreciate that at least which I agree and I love Boston.
Weekend service still sucks though.

Nice! I heard so much about San Fran's public defecation and HUGE homeless problem from various sources including women that I've dated and never want to go back *cough Makai* as well as Giant Bomb.

Since they're willing to fly you out, they must have capital coming in.
Says a guy that's been doing pro bono work for a company that hasn't launched for 2.5 years.
I heard it's so bad for some peeps out there that they're sleeping in living rooms. That being said, good luck! And since you're going to be out, try to visit the Lagunitas Brewery in Petaluma if you have free time.

The Food Film Fest was a ton of fun. Ended up hauling out loads of beers and eating Japanese food including oysters with caviar. There was a Japanese chef who had a mask on since he and the co-chef never show their face in their restaurant in Japan. I didn't get a chance to take a picture with him but he was great.

Volunteers and staff members hauled several cases of beers to the point where my friend and I helped one of the volunteers load a crap ton of cases of beer and lemonade into a cab. Fun times for sure. Next big event up for me is the Halloween Parade and the Documentary Film Festival next month. I'm also pretty sure I'm gonna have to cover some events as press for the website I'm interning for.

My friend and I sat through the new Tyler Perry movie but dozed off about 30 minutes into it on Saturday. I didn't find it all that funny to be honest but I respect Perry and all his success since dude is a genius. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I was buzzed/not tired.

Thanks,

I mean NYC definitely has a massive homeless problem as well. I mean I was homeless for a bit while I job searched. Though, I think there are different classifications of homelessness. Some are just people down on their luck and they will get back on their feet soon, others are people who have psychological disorders or long term addiction issues.

Hopefully it goes well. I applied for some other jobs, and have a few interviews set up while I am there, because why not?

Nice dude, good luck. SF is super pricey so hope you get a fat ass salary. Is it Palantir by chance? I heard those peeps love to fly people out for the later stages.

50%? Feeling generous? It's near 90%!

Hey, there are short white dudes in Williamsburg too :p Someone needs to stand up for them.

I'm sure NYC has a lot of GAFers. The site attracts a ton of lurkers too. I dont think I've ever met any other GAFer but I wouldnt be surprised if people came out of the shadows if I yelled out "GAF!" at Nintendo World or something.
