NYC is flooded

Apparently NYC and other cities around it are experiencing unprecedented flooding and travel disruptions from the Post-hurricane Ida tropical storm.

Stay safe NYCgaf.

My friends in philly have a raging river in the depression outside their kitchen where once there was a creek lol.. I'm scared their bank will collapse :/

It's Cuomo getting his revenge, using the black voodoo magic restrained within his massive head to summon the storm.

Wtf. Tornadoes all over Jersey and NY?

EWR is underwater?

Brooklyn didn't get much (some wind, heavy rain intermittently for a couple of hours), but some friends in midtown got hit pretty bad, and coworkers in some parts of central NJ got destroyed with wind and flooding.

My old stomping grounds in Brooklyn seemed to get hit pretty hard;

Plenty of flooded basements and streets here in Queens. Fortunately, my block and apartment made it through relatively unscathed. I was fully expecting to see my car floating down the street when I went to check, based on what I was seeing on the internet. I can't recall that much rain coming down that fast, which is odd, because I thought the same exact thing when it rained here heavily the day before Henri was to hit.

Looks like northern Bklyn - I'm in the south. That's crazy. Reminiscent of what all of south Brooklyn looked like during Hurricane Sandy 9-10 years ago, under 4-6 feet of water.

I guess China isn't alone in having this issue after all. It's really a function of rain and drainage. When the volume of rain exceeds drainage, these things happen. Unfortunately, we're going to be seeing more aberrant weather in the future, not less.

basement flooded and while running to get towels I slipped on water and possible broke a bone in the middle of my foot. :messenger_neutral:

The downpour was pretty insane last night, but I live at the highest elevation in NYC so I wasn't particularly concerned about flooding. Sure enough, there were scattered branches and puddles of water on my morning dog walk but nothing too bad.

I swear I read an article about NYC flooding every year and it is typically as a result from a hurricane passing by. There are pictures from last year in the subway I believe of people floating on stuff to try to get to the trains lol

I know a lot didn't like him but Hochul seems braindead.
He killed thousands of elderly with his nursing home policy.....Please forgive the political commentary MODS

I do hope the people in NY and Philly stay safe. Flooding is nothing to play around with.

Scary day yesterday hoping an EF2+ didn't spring up and destroy your house in NJ with no basement.

Can we come together and fight climate change please?

What do you want to do to fight a flood that hasn't happened for 150 years.

That is what they said in Philly, "the river hasn't been this high since 1870". Then they conclude that it is climate change that has caused it. Well what caused the river to flood 150 years ago? Was it all the horse manure in the cities or was it just a climate cycle that caused a 100 year flood situation.

Pretty sure what happened yesterday was historic. There were tornado warnings in like 8-9 different states that almost never have them.

More research has to be done, but if you ask me it seems like things are changing.

At the very least some preparations should be done to mitigate or prevent flooding in the tri-state area.

After what happened in Germany and to a lesser extent in London and now this, I'd say it's fair to say if you live in a Basement flat or dwelling, you probably want to get out sometime over the next 12 months.

There were tornadoes much like this all over NJ and PA. Some estimated possibly as high as EF3 but at least EF2

Obviously, this is terrible for NJ/NYC.

Perhaps now they will have a little understanding now of what the gulf coast goes through on yearly basis.

In Ryiadh, in the middle of the most arid deserts in the world, we used to get annual street floods just from small amounts of rain. the drainage system copied from western cities couldn't handle the climate mix. dust storms would be followed by rain and the mix of mud would clog the system. had to dig up busy streets to replace small hard to flush pipes.
