I think by the time Blu-Ray movies start to outsell DVDs (At least 4 years in Europe) broadband dowloasing or streaming will have started to come into its own. In the UK at least its just become legal to pay to download a movie and burn it onto a dvd.

The convenience and cost factor will just be too good. The quality will only have to match DVD for it to win.

How much is the least of your worries.

Ask how many days it will take to download 50GB on an average broadband connection :lol

4-5 years from now? Shouldn't take long at all.

BTW, the movement will start with downloadable SD movies, that will stream to every TV in your house.

When capacities rise, then the HD movies will become downloadable.

That would be $5 to rent it in HD and 0 days to download. I will wait for it to show up on On Demand and watch it in 720P. And it will stream live, no waiting. :)

I love this magical world some people live in where they think physical media is on the way out.
We are no where near that point, I'll even venture to say that physical media will NEVER die out, even when/if it ever becomes less popular than DDS. And that won't be happening for a couple decades.

Didn't you hear? AOL is being closed down along with all other dial up services and all DSL and Cable connections are being quadrupled in speed by the end of the year. FOR FREE!

You should refuse to use itunes because the pipedream that people will receive digital content for less is being exposed. You want 13-15 songs from itunes, $13-$15. Wow, I saved so much over picking up the actual product. What about the fact the major recording studios SUED Apple to RAISE the price of the songs. Yay, because I want to pay MORE when you're saving money.

The point when straight over your head.

Remember: CD's usually have a couple good songs, and the rest are filler.

So to get the 15 good songs you wanted, you'd have to buy somewhere between 7 and 15 CD's.

Wallet owned.

You also missed his point. On Demand could also be a Blu-Ray replacement. When those services expand, Blu-Ray may be pointless completely.

wow, ny post. just wow. i trust everything i read in there, let me tell you.

and this isn't about bias. it's about how the ny post is just a tabloid paper through and through.

It's a mainstream paper in the largest cit in the world and articles like this make a difference.

What should of been bolded was :

"They never wanted two formats. It confuses consumers and creates problems with them with returns," Casey told The Post. "They're looking to go to a single format as soon as possible."

In Casey's view, the many studios providing movies on Blu-ray, along with its inclusion in the PS3 (listing for $500, about the same as the cheapest HD DVD player) gives it an insurmountable advantage over HD DVD. (An attachment to play HD DVD discs is available as a $200 add-on for Xbox.)

The HDDVD addon is ridculous for anyone that will own a 360 and a PS3. For these people the real cost of the PS3 as a game machine is $400.

Anyone who thinks HDDVD has a chance to be the number one format is in lala land.

Downloadable HD movies will become a norm but people like to collect shit. We are a country of pack rats. People like physical media so this business that online downloads are going to kill physical media is rediculous.

I think it is you who are missing the point. RENTING a low quality stream vs. OWNING a high quality version.

I don't know where you live, but it comes with my Comcast package. I have the basic digital package plus the HDDVR upgrade. On Demand has HD movies NOW. There is nothing magical about this.

You're the one missing the point.
on demand will have it's share of the market, but IT WILL NOT come close to "replacing" disc based media, no matter how much you blindly wish it to.

Nope, I refuse to believe anything that NYPost says, because they said a Sony media is winning, giving it the nod, and also mention the PS3 in the article without slamming it to hell ($60000 Lollers)...

Listen to Arne, don't listen to this, go read Microsoft Times, XboxPost, Wii60 Weekly World News, and Bill Gates Magazine for all your factual needs...

:lol at digital distribution being thee service to own all within 5 years... I just don't believe speeds will be high enough, cheap enough, and available to enough people STILL in 5 years... It'll be a breeze downloading a movie that's meant to fit on a dual-layer blu-ray disc... And I believe way too many people like hard-copies, like an actual physical product for whatever reason...

All that PR, but no real numbers to back it up :lol

Blu-Ray is outselling DVD at the same point in their lifetimes.

Based on what? Install base due to the PS3?

Lets see some hard disc sales data and some hardware numbers that break out the PS3. All I've seen from both sides so far is PR claiming "success" based on obscure statistical comparisons that really are not relevant.

Rubbish. Fact is that hdDVD is declining and will continue to decline in favor of Bluray. What possible reason would ANYONE have to choose hdDVD anymore? Instead of attacking whats really happening, attack the source right? give me a break.

It's not the largest population center by any means but it is undeniably the Capitol of the world if there ever was any.
That said the NYpost is not even worth being used as toilet paper.

Exactly. These people are living in the stone ages, with outdated cable packages.

On Demand offers HD movies at this very second. We don't even have to wait 4-5 years.

It's here right now.

720p Horribly compressed FTL.

...Physical media will never go away. Its a FACT.

Deny it all you want, but Apple is already gearing up to offer downloads for full-length movies. In SD right now.

To most users, they prefer getting an SD movie than paying $10 more for an HD movie.

Right now, the only thing we're missing is the linkup from the computer to the cable box. You don't think we will get that in 4-5 years?

You're living in la la land.

The "HD" content available on these services is shit. Shit picture quality and shit sound that may be acceptable for regular TV shows since it's a huge leap over SD broadcast, but is no where near good enough to be compared to properly encoded hd media discs.

Even if its 720 horribly compressed its already here. I am sure that in 4 years 1080p or a close variant won't be possible. :rolleyes

Based on the amount of movies being sold.

Blu-Ray disc sales > DVD disc sales at the same point in time.

If you want more numbers visit the Blu-Ray thread in the OT.

Not on Blu-Ray, which means I'm buying the HD-DVD. If it were on Blu-Ray I'd probably get that version, but it's exclusive to HD-DVD so I'm buying a disc in a different colored box OMG!

Hey, I want one song off of an otherwise crappy album. You mean I can just buy that one song on iTunes for $1 instead of $10 ~ $16 for the whole crappy album? Wow!

Also, nobody has sued Apple to raise the prices. No idea where you're getting that from.

haha god you guys. this isn't about MS vs. Sony. this is about the quality of the NY Post as a paper (to me) that I'm doubting. I trust the NY Post as much as I trust TheInquirer.net, they are sensationalist at best.

that being said, to sysgen's point, the problem is a lot of people read the Post and don't realize their reporting isn't exactly the best.

i mean come on, check out their front page headlines:

GRANNY'S REVENGE (anti-mugging law)
YOU RATS (a message from commuters to striking transportation workers)
STOP OR I'LL SCOOT (cops on segways)
HE'S DEAD (tim mcveigh execution)

sigh.

I see what he did there...

PS: I recommend a ban on anything related to the New York Post. As well as all other tabloid rags.

New York Post -> owned by Rupert Murdoch -> Fox News -> 20th Century Fox -> teh bias

While that was obviously playing the numbers to make a statement, it doesn't change reality. More than two were exclusive to BluRay, and the sales have been better in general for the titles released on both (at least since January). Just look at something like the Departed.

There was Starship Troopers and Ghost in the Shell. Yea....

You sure about Ghost in the Shell? Most anime companies were very hesitant on DVD at first (just like they're being with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD). I know the first official US release was Battle Arena Toshinden, and then after that was Street Figther II the movie. I don't think Ghost in the Shell came in the first year, but my memory could be off.
