NYT: Life and Combat for Republicans at Berkeley

Universities are incredibly unbalanced ideologically in favor of the left. You don't have to be a right-winger to concede this and acknowledge that it is a problem. When the teachers are 9 to 1 on the left (many on the far left), and the country is narrowly split down the middle, that signals a real disconnect.

These college students are not wrong to feel that they are in a precarious position in the social and administrative environment on these campuses.

It would be in everyone's favor to have more ideological diversity on campus and a clear stance from administrators in favor of the free expression of a plurality of political views.
They've deliberately created an unsafe environment on campus. University should expel the club leadership of College Republicans.
Absurd and dangerous sentiment.

I mean... what do you want schools to teach? That climate change is bullshit? That racism and economic inequality don't exist? Bullshit voodoo economics?

How do you explain that to your female students and students of color????

Come on.

I'm for punching Nazis so you should probably just ignore me. And no I'm not calling these out right Nazis. Shitty people certainly.

They may be shitty people but if they are getting abused either verbally or physically they have a legitimate reason to gripe and complain, like what they are doing right now.

So what you are saying is that the people who's job it is to actually know their shit (enough to teach others) tend to reject right-wing bullshit?

Oh but it's A-OK when the people these republicans are inviting use their various platforms to promote violence and harassment?

He says that but I wouldn't be surprised if he internally considers himself white. Poor bastard probably thinks Republicans view him as an equal. Reminds me of Jontron.

Nevertheless, he shouldn't be getting randomly punched or spat on just because he's a Republican.

Half of the Persians I've met are whiter than me.

Why's that exactly? And they are welcome to express their unpopular views and admiration for horrible people.

I take it you haven't been to college at all then?

There was a freshmen seminar where we had to go out and see who would people vote for back in September. There was a Trump supporter who straight up wore a hat and said to the (black) female interviewer something like, "I don't care about the views of your people I know Trump is better for this country." I think it's hilarious that you think Universities are liberal safe havens. The class before mine had more Trumpets than Hillary voters. Though I guess some of them are feeling the regret, lol.

Boo hoo for pushing someone like Milo and expecting people to just stand their and take it, let alone quietly.

Not only that, if these college Republicans don't have a 100% full scholarship, they're getting handouts in the form of financial aid and/or student loans.

How do you balance universities so they teach right wing ideology?

Academia should always favor facts over pseudo-science. I don't see how one could teach a class on all the crazy shit Trump and his followers believe given they are 100% wrong.
"Women who get abortions must be punished 101"
"Debunking Global warming. The Chinese Hoax edition"

Until the right wing reorganize themselves to eliminate all nonfactual beliefs, I'm ok with Universities not bending backwards to install hateful ideas.

GAF consensus is completely deluded on this issue. This kind of thing is increasingly leading universities to be held in open contempt by much of the population. Just read the comments on any major news site when these stories of campus absurdities arise. The consensus is always ten to one against in all but the most extreme left-wing circles.

The public supports many of the policies of the economic left, but absolutely despises the excesses of the modern cultural left.

its almost as if there is a correlation between education level and political ideology

Wait, you're using comment sections as the baseline for your "open contempt among the public" assertion, as if comment sections are a bastion of integrity and sound ideas... Is this satire?

Stop fucking whining about the GAF Hivemind and actually fucking back your statements up. Comments on major news sites is not evidence, unless you think climate change is also bullshit (according to CNN's comments). Fucking Christ.

They never learn.

NYT, like most major outlets, missed the zeitgeist of the election. They are actively trying to give a more balanced insight and speak to and understand the people who put Trump in office. It's a good thing, and I commend them for it because next time we might see it coming and be able to react begore it's too late.

The issue is where you think that problem lies. Its not with the universities as much as it is with the Conservatives taking a hard ass lurch to the right in the last 3+ decades into straight up looneyville.

Pretend that the problem is that the "numbers aren't even" when the truth is, one half has just adopted such insanely crazy shit that they are having trouble maintaining support amongst educated human beings anymore. That's the republican party's problem to bear and fix, not the universities. You aren't entitled to equal numbers of support man regardless of how outrageous your views.

You don't know what the public supports. Lets get that straight right here and now. Your anecdotes from comment sections of 'news sites' mean fuck all, and are not to be extrapolated to extremes as if you have taken the temperature of the average american on these issues. Honestly, that you would claim as much so openly is really ridiculous.

They voted for Trump?

One of the worst things to happen to our country in awhile, let them stew on being on the wrong side of history for the rest of their lives.

Easier for them to double down than actually take a hard look at why people are mad at them enforcing a party that has been destroying our country for decades.

Please don't use the damn near anonymous internet comments on news sites as any example of "the public"

If I did the same then I suppose the American Public also supports massive ethnic cleansing.

I find it mystifying that Republicans at Berkeley didn't know what they were getting into prior to enrollment. The school does have a bit of a reputation, ya know...

Overall, like other's have stated, it seems that the stated goal of the College Republicans @ Berkeley seem to be to rile people up and push their buttons, not encourage dialogue. One part of the article mentions that they invited Coulter and Milo as a method to do this -- Coulter's speaking fees were even described as out of the normal for what the BCR would normally pay.

I wouldn't want anything bad to happen to these folks, and I def would never do anything like spill a drink on them.

I'll be on campus next semester as a transfer student so I read this article with some curiosity. I was there for transfer day last weekend and I saw some Antifa and alt-right fighting on the bathroom stall walls. It's going an interesting 2 years.

For schools to not be predominantly left-wing, the window of what is acceptable and popular for Republicans would have to shift towards the left. This would likely mean giving up on battles such as abortion, the destruction of social programs, and tax cuts for the wealthiest.

The schools don't need to change. Republicans do.

I'm assuming you're talking about shit like microtransgressions or whatever?

Okay, fine. But can you explain how supporting such things means we have to balance it out with the beliefs of people like Milo and Coulter?

Of course that was the goal. There's NO dialogue or debate to be had about extremists shit-stirrers like those two. The saddest part is when so-called liberals full-throatedly come to their defense.

Like, look

If you're a conservative who thinks the best thing for the world/country is to have limited government interference with things and free markets and blah blah because you genuinely believe it will help everyone at the end of the day, then yeah you deserve your right to say your piece.

Racism and "women's place is to be baby factories" conservatives can blow it out their ass, nobody's got time for that shit anymore

My very first day of class we were talking about our backgrounds in political science, and one student said, “We are all liberals in this class, right?” Most of the class was laughing or smiling, but I felt a little alienated. I kind of kept quiet.

I consider myself fiscally conservative and socially moderate. I believe in more limited social welfare programs, a flat tax rate.

When people are asked why they are Republican, their opinions on reproductive rights are always conspicuoisly absent. It's always this shit.

You do realize that I can say "don't promote Milo" and also "don't spill drinks on people" right? Those two are not mutually exclusive.

And I'm fine with both. They know what they were getting when stanning for Milo and Coulter. I'm expecting Steve Bannon as their next invite.
