Oblivion Remastered |OT| Kvatching up with an old hero

Thanks , do I need to directly kill her to get the dark Brotherhood campaing or just hit her sometimes and leave the rest to imperial guards?

You can actually kill any NPC to start the Brotherhood. Stalk out a homeless person if need be.

If the guards finish her off I seriously doubt it would count though.

I absolutely love this game, but God damn it has to be one of the worst performing games I've played on PC. Just constant stutters in the open world. (Yes, I've tried all the fixes)

Yeah looks OK I guess but for whatever reason runs like shite meaning all over the place once in the open world with decent med/high settings + DLSS performance on 4K with 4070Ti. Similar vibes as launch Starfield even without official DLSS, game didn't do anything groundbreaking in visuals to run shite like that. Even STALKER 2 run way better
Even on 720p it would stick around at olny 80-100fsp or so on high/ultra with some of them UE5 tweak mods, really weird... Gonna have to fine tune it for locked 60.
Lol how I never really played it much back then due to lack of decent PC and now .. well seems like same old story :D

Yeah I played for a couple more hours today and I can't do it. At least not now. I put like 300 hours into this game the first time. I rarely ever sink that kinda time into games and by the end I can't wait to be done with games. I adored Oblivion but by the end of it I couldn't play for another second. Even though it was like 20 years ago, I'm playing now and I remember so much of it and I'm just like I can't do this all over again. Everything I already spent 300 hours on. Plus the general tediousness of Bethesda games. They require so much micromanaging which in 2025 I just don't have the patience like I used to when I was younger.

I'm going to put this one on ice for a while. I definitely should have held off on this one and got it on sale. But I do think they did a beautiful job recreating it. I just can't get back into a game like this. Not right now.

Start Game
Find Umbra
Hit Umbra
Lead Umbra Back to Imperial City
Watch as Guards kill Umbra
Loot Dead Umbra and Guards
Profit
Now the game begins

:messenger_grinning_smiling:
also dont forget the fin gleam which is good for swimming stuff

I feel ya. I put the same amount of time into it in 2006, then actually replayed almost all of it, including DLCs, in summer 2023!

So gameplay-wise, it's all super fresh to me. I had to roll a stealth archer character to get something different out of it, as I've never done that before (despite that being my standard build in Skyrim). I've also installed some mods to really increase the difficulty. Just trying to make the experience as fresh and challenging as possible to maintain the immersion.

been a very long time since I've played Oblivion, but it feels like I'm getting over encumbered way more than I remember

am I missing something? I'm going archer with some magic so I wasn't planning on pumping strength.

I hardly loot anything and I'm always carrying too much weight

Hmm, my experience is seemingly the opposite. I'm feeling like encumbrance is less of an issue than what I remember of the original. But then again I'm main-ing an Umbra based strength and blade build too.

I'm gonna be honest here, the NPC's somehow kinda look worse than before

They are indeed not so good looking. IMO Bethesda should hire people with more feeling for aesthetically pleasing results because the design comes from OG Bethesda which is still in this remake/remaster.
Or they already have idk since i haven't played Starfield.

One thing I like in older games that I have been frustrated with in modern games, is how dialogue is structured. In modern games, every dialogue branch is 3 sentences long, every fucking time, but in Oblivion and games of that era, dialogue options can have simple one word answers and short sentences. It makes conversations flow better, you dont feel like you gotta wait until the talking is complete, like in modern games, where conversations always feel long in the tooth.

I think I'm used to playing Skyrim with mods so that certain items don't have weight. I've been pretty selective about what I pick up in Oblivion.

Never got to play this back in the day. The only thing stopping me from getting this for the Pro is the stuttering reports I read. Hope they can iron it out, but I am slowly starting to hate UE5.

As a big Skyrim fan back in the day, I am absolutely intrigued with Oblivion. At first, I thought it was maybe overreaction in regards to the stuttering, but maybe not? Not sure what really to believe

Last night, I went to Chorrol, clearing a few vampire nests on the way. (Even the basic caves look incredible, and are a joy to play through again.) The highlight was standing in the main street of Chorrol and watching the sun rise. As the sun slowly made its way over the mountain tops, I watched as the light moved and filled the street, the whole place coming alive. The early morning fog, the radiance of the light, the music. Absolutely incredible moment. This is currently my GOTY, and looking at the calendar, there's nothing - not even DOOM - that's climbing to these heights.

Who says there's no good loot?

Just ran into a strange bug - I used an invisibility potion but my charactered stayed invisible and I had to restart the game to go back to normal.

Stop believing internet hyperbole with the "stuttering" and just fucking get it dude

You're reading the pure enjoyment we're all having regardless of whatever blemishes right?

I got an 8bitdo 2 ultimate only to find out it doesn't work with this game. I am livid, but the silver lining here is that I now own an 8bitdo 2 Ultimate. Tried it with Shadps4 and the quality is night and day when comparing my old controller. Feels like silky magic in my hands, too. Comes with a slick dock charger and cable.

I play on the PS5 Pro, I haven't noticed a ton of stuttering in the open world, it happens from time to time but the original version on consoles had micro loads all the time and that was much worse. I am having a really good time with it, it's not perfect but as someone who loved the game back in the day I am really just enjoying being back in that world again.

Appreciate you being real and honest here. Truly. And yes, the enjoyment is clear. Glad to come into this thread and read this kind of take. What I expect from you all.

Has anyone tested it on Linux on Steam? You will get double the shader compilation there, one from Valve servers and one from in-game.

Traversal stutters were reduced to minimum in Silent Hill 2 Remake on UE5.

Someone start a petition to get the devs to patch in a classic filter to restore colors. I want to explore Oblivion's fantastical comforting world not feel like its almost Fallout3. The actual remake is great, the fidelity is also pretty great its just the artistic choice of lighting and colors is hard to digest.

Game looks great and runs well for me (granted I'm using an old 1080ti so medium quality, 35 FPs overworld, 60+ interiors/etc - I don't really care at all, 30 fps is fine for me, but also haven't tried tinkering with settings/upscaler to get better performance at all).

Love that it's still Oblivion under the hood, that was my biggest concern. Granted I'm only level 5, but I'm really optimistic at this present moment. Some weird jank, like some new NPCs look amazing, others look questionable and sometimes their animations when talking or expressing are hilarious. Haven't had nearly as much time to play as I'd like, but easing along! Love that lockpicking, athletics, acrobatics, etc are all still here and well.

It's definitely more muted than the original with the bloom to the max, but Fallout 3 is a stretch of a comparison..

Sorry if this has already been addressed numerous times in this 22 page thread so far, but I'm just wondering how the gameplay has been changed before I dive into this. I'm not looking to complain about any changes, just wondering what to expect. I always had a hard time going back to Oblivion because of the skill point system and how you had to micromanage every single skill. Has that been improved?

Yeah, I do not understand comparing this with Fallout 3 at all, lol.

The original had its style, very bright emerald colored foliage etc, this is not *that* fantastical, but this is far from a muted color palette of a game.

The time of day can make the atmosphere feel different, some examples of the same spot just few in-game hours apart.

i think bethedsda needs to add more npcs ,its a graphical remaster but the low npc count makes the cities look empty. that was a limitation of that generation not todays.

Lol i think i wasted my money on this one, combat feel even more dogshit than i expected, i'm gonna give it another couple of hours try but i know myself and if i have to dread every combat encounter, i'm not gonna last for long...

This has more loading than Starfield 😂 Quite enjoying it, though - apart from the random rough performance when outside.

Never played the original despite growing up on Skyrim and man, the first hour or so was really a struggle to get through. But this clicked hard both visually and vibes-wise once I was just wandering around for a while and the music started hitting

Sometimes developers take a title's style as a problem with the technology of the time. They did the same with SotC remake removing the intentional overexposed fantasy look as limitation of its HDR and bloom setup. Jump to The Last Guardian and on PS4 Ueda recreates the same kind of look in a modern era and with proper HDR and bloom, TLG with new tech is much more faithful to the SotC look than the SotC remake.

This is stated to be a faithful remaster not a remake and yet they changed the art style far beyond modernising the tech. As people are showing, cheap reshape plugins can get you very close very cheaply to the original art style and for $50 a pop we could ask Bethesda to do the same or better for console users too (if they did touch gameplay sorting level scaling issues would be nice too).

It's the same engine, they are incapable of making this a separate location without loading a different cell - ever since Morrowind where every cave entrance was a door.

Isn't it vastly improved over the original? What makes it feel so bad?

Not it is not "vastly" improved, it's improved a little, it feels very floaty but i'm getting used to it a little, coming from avowed and some other melee games i'm playing with incredible hit reactions and animations doesn't help.

Btw, does the luck stat help with finding better loot? I don't know if i wanna chose the thief sign or the one the gave you 15% def against physical and magic...

Does luck effect something about melee? I heard it kinda help with magic users but i'm a warrior and the only magic i'm gonna do is evoking stuff.

Now purchased. Will install on my Steamdeck later. Fingers crossed that I don't get killed by rats in a basement this time.

Consensus is that it doesn't affect loot but there's never been proper testing to conclude that afaik.

Otherwise it's just a modifier for your skills. Every 10 levels of luck adds 4 points to your skills. You're still capped at 100 regardless though. Unless you plan to be using the razor dagger it's not worth investing in.
