You have to be really, really poor - not just working poor, like most of the poor people trying to better themselves in CUNY - to qualify for and receive that aid. If you're a kid working at Foot Locker making 22k a year, you won't get shit - and that $2500/semester is a lot of your money, especially given you're probably operating paycheck-to-paycheck in NYC on 22k/yr.

But yeah, fuck them

give me a f'n break. i go to a cuny right now and 75% of the people i know have some sort of financial aid. if you're a kid making 22k a year you will get fin aid.

The NYC TAP awards make education free for these kids.

$2500 is surprisingly cheap for a NY school. I pay more than that to go to UNO here in New Orleans after fees and all that.

I wish we could get some overhead shots of the crowd.

I am giving you a break. I go to a CUNY right now as well.

And of course many of those kids are receiving some kind of aid - many of them are really, really poor. That's part of the reason why they went to CUNY.

As for the financial aid...go to the CUNY portal and use the financial aid estimator; doing it to go to Brooklyn College with a yearly wage of 22,000 and a EFC of $5,224 in a household of 1 (independent student, paying for himself), I only got a $500 grant. Still gotta come up with 2k and change a semester to go to college living on 22k/year. Still tough, man.

So take a loan

Or strip.

You telling me you can't make women want to make it rain for you!

j/k

I'll admit it is hard, but I think there are lots of options to make the required money or get it in loans, or even credit cards.

Ironically it would be a way to discharge your loans in bankruptcy (not that I advise it).

Schattenjagger said:

Poor kids/adults/immigrants can't get loans with no/bad credit.

Alternatively, why would you want the poor to take loans they can't pay back? Isn't that part of the problem here to begin with - easy loans to people not qualified for it/who can't afford them?

College probably shouldn't be free or anything...but I just don't see why it's some crazy thing for (mostly) poor immigrant students to be upset about constantly increasing tuition in the schools they go to. That's all. I myself am not complaining about the tuition - but I can see why they would.

What about the report from the Atlantic that was just posted?

Rumors can be bullshit too.

Here's a rumour backed by fact and food for thought. The CIA has been training NYPD for anti-terror surveillance ops for years now. Only recently have others in the government spoken about an issue or a conflict of mission. That's the fact. Now the rumour. NYPD has already infiltrated OWS. ....

...How do you make 22,000 while also studying?

By working and going to school concurrently.

I did that.
I do that.
I did it in undergrad, and am doing it in grad school.

I don't want loans, so I'm paying out of pocket and busting my ass - that's how team Gurren rolls.

What about getting ladies to make it rain? Kidding aside they can't even get small partial loans?

Alternatively, why would you want the poor to take loans they can't pay back? Isn't that part of the problem here to begin with?
When it's that small in a sense it is, but in the reality it really isn't. Once again not advising bankruptcy or not paying credit cards.

Kerry Burke reports a standoff at 14th and 5th, where over 1,000 protesters are at a standstill. Cops in riot gear have mobilized, and are lined up four rows thick. There are rows of police scooters present, and an ESU vehicle.

The crowd is shouting "We are the 99%". Many protesters are standing on vehicles, screaming and holding signs.

No arrests at this location so far.

I have a friend who's been at the protest for a month and a half, he says there are plenty of agent provocateurs there and they're easy to spot. Apparently, they're still trying to find the 'leaders' of OWS - they don't grasp the concept of a leaderless movement. Who knows what they might be doing during these protests.

Must be a liberal arts major though.

Nope.

Business Information Systems/Economics.

My college career is crazy, though. I started as a CS major 10 years ago straight out of high school, got my ass kicked and left school for a year, came back as an English major, left school for another 2 years, went back and finished an AA in English, changed my major to Information Systems, finished that shit, and started in Econ last year.

I'm sorry but I have to bust out the tinfoil image on that. I think that's just as bad as the Soros is funding this from the right.

Tinfoil. The NYPD has an order barring them from doing that (not specific to OWS, but from the 1980s). That said having information about what's going on would be different than infiltration.

This is no good. You need to take the advice of Manos et al and take out a bunch of loans. We need to reinflate that credit bubble so it can be America the Beautiful once again!

Doing more than an English major was a very very good idea. I say this as someone with a wife who has an BA and MA in English and who enjoys her work, but it's a hard as hell to find stuff on that alone.

I also figured based on your last job you had before you got laid off (I retain useless facts somehow all the time) that it would be based on something BIS or Data related.

There was video evidence of that happening in another Occupy protest posted earlier in this thread.

Edit:

The police are there and they are looking for the leaders of the movement. Whether they are involved in inciting violence or not is speculation, but don't deny facts.

I wasn't being serious anyway :p The school system in Holland is so radically different from the States. I would probably be bitching constantly if I ever moved and had children there. Everything sounds so expensive. Socialism has spoiled me.

Hmm....

They might have an order preventing them from going down there and setting up a sting, yes. There's no order preventing private citizens from going down to OWS on their off day to be really forward and meet everyone and be really awfully helpful, is there?

Or even just informants. Which are you willing to deny the possibility or feasibility of?

Well then they aren't doing anything wrong/acts of private citizens.

You talking about Handschu? In 2007 Haight ruled that they're not in violation if they show the investigation is motivated by suspicion of criminal activity. So even under the dubious assumption that they are strictly adhering to it, they know all they have to do is make a minimal showing that they suspect criminal activity, so I doubt they're all that worried about it.

Heh, yep...I'm surprised you remembered that, too!

That was the reason for changing my major...or at least one of them. The other was my own pride; I was too damn good at computers and databases to just give up on that stuff entirely, especially since I'd learned so much at work. I went back to prove to myself that I could do it.

...but yeah, in conclusion the students of CUNY have every right to complain about that tuition. It might be cheap for a lot of people, but for those people, it's a lot more than immaterial.

Well nothing to worry about then.

Isn't there an earlier order regarding domestic political groups though?

Well if its the 'act of a private citizen', who knows what ones gets up to then, when one is off the clock?

Bottom line, it's not crazy or unlikely at all that there are plain clothed policemen in the crowd, on duty or off; some of whom could be interacting with protesters who are totally unaware of their identities. Even the possibility is insane you still say?

Yeah I can remember some obscure random stuff.

Cool that you were able to do it though, must have been awesome feeling in the end though considering all the stuff you had to go through.

I can see what you saying about CUNY and some going there.

There's one 1985 consent decree saying no spying on political activities, but all the NYPD has to do is show that there may be some criminal activity going on, and they're not in violation.
