That said, I wasn't expecting the people showing up to be this useless and ineffectual...and hilarious! So I was overcautious, I gave these people way too much credit.

Everyone's there for different reasons, there is no defined message, they are all different; welcome to the modern age, we all have different problems/grievances but we can, and are allowed to, gather together as one and protest.

I've got a friend who has organized a bunch of protests in the past, and he told me that you could pretty much know this one was going to fail ahead of time because Anonymous was involved (and they're not really capable of doing productive things if said things involve leaving their computers). He pretty much called everything we've seen in this thread; total compliance (no chaining themselves to buildings or being confrontational whatsoever), no organization or unified message discipline at all, and a huge overemphasis on terrible costumes. Anonymous members don't understand why dressing up as Darth Vader and hanging a sign around your neck that says WALL STREET converts pretty much zero people to your side *and* makes the other people at the protest look more ridiculous simply for being on the same side as you.

Haven't asked, but my guess is: more stuff like actually blocking people from getting into the trading floor, *actually* impeding business in any sense, not getting up and moving wherever the cops tell you to move, et cetera. Also, message discipline and no stupid costumes.

You know, the actual risky kind of civil disobedience that requires you to get arrested, but makes the point that impeding the interests of the powerful is all it takes to get you arrested. The kind of civil disobedience that actually puts you at risk, and thus that the 'nonviolent' privileged middle class white people who showed up for this event are afraid of.

The police state didn't even let the protest happen legitimately since they can't even be on Wall Street, so whatever. I do hope what's there increases in size at least, though.

Of course; they know that the American public is too apathetic to put anything together and actually change things for the better. The scum on Wall Street heard about this and had a good laugh at their exclusive country club this weekend.

Why did the cops not let them onto Wall Street? Don't all the traders access the NYSE via the side door, since the actual front of the building has a gate around it? If its just a tourist plaza anyways, who cares if they want to congregate there?

I recall hearing that it was something to do with foot and car traffic in the area. They also didn't bother trying to get a permit too.

In NYC, at least, certain types of protests require permits, and in some cases, bonds. AFAIK, its a fairly straightforward process to obtain a permit.

If you want to have a protest in a public park, for example, and expect a lot of people to be there, you have to pay for a bond that is basically an insurance policy in case the protestors cause damage to the area they are protesting.

In 2004 there was supposed to be a huge protest in Central Park to protest the Republican convention, but nobody was willing to cough up the bond money, so the cops wouldn't let them have their protest in Central Park, IIRC.

Walked up Wall Street today from the East River to the Church, and not a single protester was in sight. I did notice a lonely protest sign laying on the cobblestones behind gates. The actual street was blocked, so pedestrians could only walk on the sidewalks. So if the goal of this thing was to make a single street in NYC more difficult to traverse for middle and lower class workers striving to get to their low-paying jobs on time, then congrats. It totally worked!
