I remember watching the Raw when Foley beat the rock, crying obviously but why did this really really give wwf that boost in ratings? Was Foley basically the Daniel Bryan of WWF?

Kind of except it wasn't long awaited for Foley. Foley's popularity was a recent thing. He said in his book that he was thinking about retiring after Hell of a Cell due to the lack of interest fans had in him after everything he did. Fans really started liking him when he started being funny (Trying to play twister with McMahon and coming up with Mr Socko) and fans really hated the Corporation and were sympathetic to him getting screwed over and abused over and over by the Corporation.

If anyone wants to relive this in short version, here's some videos I made 8 years ago starting with Survivor Series 1998 and ending with Foley winning the title. Note the lukewarm reception Mankind gets when he comes out in the beginning. This was in Nov 98. Contrast that to the love he gets from the fans one month later.

Between not showing up to shows, cancelling with a partner promotion because they wouldn't upgrade his flight at the last minute, and now going back to WWE abruptly without giving the company time to find a way to get their world title off him, he's safely burned at least the AAA bridge, and it's hard to do that without also burning LU's bridge too in the process
