considering an atari 2600 was the inflation adjusted price equivalent of $842
you're crazy if you believe that out of context inflation numbers.
I had the 2600 in the very early 80s, here in Brazil. My father would never get one if it were that expensive, man - specially with all import taxes and conversion rates and all. Yet, it was very popular here too.
Up to N64, consoles were always $250 or less. Prices rose up to PS3 disastrous $500-600 and then scale back to around $400 - this is probably how much it cost back then with inflation accounted for consumer electronics...
Quest is doing great for a niche electronics product, but its longevity is not anywhere close to that of a console and in 4 years we may be already on Quest 4 or 5, so unless you sum all of them together, you won't see above 10 million figures... but it's getting more and more, if not popular then at least acceptable and less hateful...
