Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

Just noticed that in the GDC videos, when they're showing someone playing on a DK2, the cloned display on the TV's isn't showing a SBS barrel distorted image.
But when they show someone in the same room playing on a DK1, it's the same distorted SBS image on the TV that we're used to seeing on cloned displays.

I wonder if this means anything?

Maybe you can't clone the displays because the new rift is 75hzs?

I have a feeling that they might have removed the barrel effect from the final output on the monitors for presentation purposes, since this is a press event showing.

Ah jesus... $550 AUD once it accounts for shipping and taxes.

But why the fuck is it charging my taxes when I'm in Australia? I'm only charged on GST once imports reaches $1000... fishy as fuck.

I have emailed them asking this question, I thought it would have been removed at the checkout, not so.

I got my order in 1.5hr after it went on sale.

i7 3770k @ 4.3GHz
16GB
670 4GB x2 SLI
128GB SSD
DK1

Not planning to upgrade for quite awhile.

Was wondering, could someone gather the list of gaffers who bought the DK2 and what their current rig is composed of and if they plan to upgrade.

I7 980x
12GB DDR3
3x sli gtx 480

Planing to upgrade everything from scratch by the time consumer rift will hit. But currently will use my setup for dk2

Pre-ordered. Palmer can tell me to not buy it until his face turns blue. I want this guy to take my wallet.

Figure he wants developers to have it as a priority, also because they will most likely produce stuff for it, rather than just consume it.

I'd hazard a guess the vast majority of the gaffer demographic buying a DK2 have plans to upgrade to a 860Ti, 870, or 880. People been waiting for that a long ass time for Maxwell at this point.

Will be sticking with a 770 until sometime next year, most likely.

It's the same thing as CES, I think they explained they had an expensive converter box just for the demonstration setups that doesn't just mirror the doubling and the distortion, purely for demonstration purposes and I assume because it looks better in the background during press footage.

I hardly do any PC gaming, but I just had to buy the DK2 after trying out a friend's Oculus Rift.

My current specs are -
Intel Core i5 750 @ 3.20GHz
GeForce GTX 550 Ti

Do I have a hope in hell of being able to play stuff with my current graphics card?

I might do this. How headphone friendly is the rift? I need to wear my headphones for audio.
It's meant to be used that way. It works pretty well, and only the cord is a hassle. The new devkit seems to have the cord coming off the back of the Rift instead of the side, and I'm hoping it's cleaner that way.

I also hope the new devkit supports heads at least as large as the last one, since I have a GIANT MUTANT head and could only fit the previous one at the maximum resize setting. D:

In light of the dev kit 2 announcement I decided to take a look back at the first post where it all started. Pretty big improvements for only a year and 11 months time! And I'd say Palmer ended up with a bit more than the original $10 for pizza and beer that he was hoping for.

If you're a history buff check it out. Carmack shows up on the 14th post or so.

And then two months later, Carmack was at E3 2012 with an early prototype that was constructed out of ski goggles and duct tape:

This was the first public venue showing of the Rift. It was also my pick for best tech shown at E3 2012. Then the kickstarter appeared in July 2012? and made $2.4 million dollars.

The Rift went from concept to reality in such a short time, it's really quite incredible.

ahh, thanks.

350$ is pretty cheap. What would it cost with shipping and tax to europe (germany) ?

I only have a 7850 in my PC but that should be powerful enough for old games like HL2 and Doom 3 no ?

Dk1 1280 x 800 is not even close to as bad as that website portrays it in my experience.

Do you own a DK1 by chance?

I have one and would agree with the way the resolution is presented. It's really close, but still a simulator so there's going to be minor inaccuracies to the actual hardware. If you try to play a game with text at a distance on the DK1 (aka, most likely not designed for the DK1), you'll quickly see that it's unreadable like it shows in the simulator.

The blur doesn't look completely accurate, but it gets the point across about low persistence at least. Honestly, the blur happens so quick when you're in the headset that it's hard to say whether that's accurate or not. It's absolutely noticeable but it's like a smear and then gone when I stop moving my head. Plus, the simulator moves at a snails pace compared to how your head would move looking around quickly in a world, so that may affect how I preserve it as well.

I'm currently on a 770 4GB (which OCs to ~1250 Mhz), don't plan to upgrade immediately unless high-end Maxwell is a significant jump. I'm already buying Haswell-E and a new MB and RAM this year.

Don't forget Euro Truck Simulator 2:

Right, that's a pretty big one as well.

Somebody else in this thread said it cost $500+ delivering to Germany.
It's ~500 USD (360 €) delivered to Austria, but I thinnk I'll still have to pay import fees on top of that.

Bought it about 2 hours after it went live yesterday mainly off the hype and getting to try the first one at Rezzed last year... Then remembered in the morning I have a genuine reason to get one as I backed the Diplopia project on indiegogo last year which uses one to help improve stereoscopic vision for people born cross eyed or with a lazy eye. Going to be a long wait for both to be delivered!

specs are currently and will probably remain:
2500k
24gig ram
2x7950s

For those that have used OR, how accurate is this site at showing the screendoor effect/persistence?

http://vr.mkeblx.net/oculus-sim/
That's pretty well-made, though I do wonder how accurate it can be without knowing physical screen sizes and viewing distance. However, I especially like their simulation of persistence issues and low persistence. That's pretty accurate compared to my own experience with DK1.

Just move closer to the sign and try to read the small text with and without low persistence.

He talks about numerous problems

- resolution is only 720p he says because it is so close he can see every pixel
-objects in the distance look very poor because of the resolution
-he takes his glasses off so it looks better !
-lag makes him sick
-he steers the truck worse than a first time learner driver ?

apart from that its fantastic ?

Lets hope the new dev kit addresses all of these significant issues

One more thing about that simulator: they should really add the option to simulate different levels of AA. High-quality AA can make a huge difference for DK1 (and I presume DK2 as well).

I don't have to pay any taxes till they deliver it to me. Then it will be around +100$ (Switzerland) so it will cost me 525$ in the end.

Looks like we're going to need 4k at 60+ fps.

Welp.

Well eventually, yeah. The first consumer release isn't going to be the last, and GPUs will of course get more powerful along with software improvements specifically targeting VR. In 2 years 4k @ 60 Hz will totally be feasible.

Yeah, CV1 certainly won't be 4k. I'm still flabbergasted that it looks like it will be >1080p and at least 90 Hz.

Final goal should be 4K @120fps, that would be perfect. And custom-made lenses for every eyesight.
Actually no, the final goal should be 16k per eye at 1000 Hz

;)

I mean for a consumer version in the next 2-3 years. First consumer version should be 1440p (1280x1440 per eye, 4x more pixels than 720p) with 90Hz.

Almost impossible. Is there even a 4K phone yet?
No, but the Galaxy S5 has a 1080p OLED, maybe they will built a 4K display for their smartphone in 2 years.

Oh God, I remember the epic journey Durante's DK1 made.

i5 3570K @ 4.5Ghz
GTX 780 Ti x 2
Razer hydra

No need to upgrade just yet. I can't wait to play HL2 using DK2, I went through it last year using the hydra and it was brilliant.
