I got my Rift last week and haven't even opened the box yet. I don't even think I really want it anymore. Can I return it? Maybe sell it to a GAFfer?

I think you have like 14 days to contact them from acceptance to set up a return, actually. I'd e-mail them straight away if you plan on doing that just so you have the record of contacting them within 14 days of when you could show it was delivered.

Yeah I feel like the experience is different for everyone. I tried various 360 degree videos from different apps and found that the range went anywhere from absolutely unwatchable (some videos I couldn't even make out what was going on) to barely watchable.

I assumed that compression played some role here but I do think the resolution also played a part. A little bit of both I imagine.

I do agree that the games look a bit better and I also some what agree that the more I got into games the less the fov of view bothered me but it never completely disappeared from my memory in my playtime experience and while it's hard to express my experience entirely I found the the lesser fov and blurry resolution kind of made me a bit uncomfortable. Like wearing a dirty pair of glasses or something which makes me not really want to wear the Rift for long play sessions more then like maybe 30 minutes a day.

I feel that everyone's experiences will be based on the quality of their vision and how much things bother them which is why we get such a wide range of impressions and will continue to do so for some time.

The Oculus Rift and the current VR sets in general are quite revolutionary and really rather amazing. If it wasn't for the comfort level of the resolution and fov bothering me then I would likely be using my Rift all the time. I don't want to undersell what has been accomplished by those in the industry who have spent years developing and improving the technology. This is game changing technology and I have no doubt in my mind that in a few years we will all be wearing VR sets and completely immersed in all forms of entertainment.

I do want to play some more games. I don't have many and I honestly find the prices rather disappointing. Been eyeballing Edge of Nowhere but I don't know. Game looks good but $40 is a lot to drop on a game unless it's super awesome.

Yeah of course each person will have different experiences. For me I really don't have any issue with resolution in games, yet I think the 360 videos I've seen are unwatchable. The problem for me with 360 video's is just the quality of video capture and compression. I suppose the issue there is that the resolution of the video is stretched right across the 360 degree viewable area, instead of just one viewpoint like a normal video. I'd have liked to know what resolution those videos were captured in.

Have you tried Lost BTW? Its not a game but quite a surprisingly good experience for a short demo.

Its been updated in a beta, but you have to opt in to beta's on steam apparently. Anyone know how I do this?

Right click game in library
select Properties
Should be a BETAS tab on the right.
"Select the beta you would like to opt into:" dropdown

I dont know. I get a bit mad, when I see that people from the UK who ordered the Oculus in March with an estimate of August, later than I did, already got their shipping email last week, while I ordered in late February, estimate late July, still didnt get my mail...

The distribution is self contained by region. It was annoying when I had to deal with it as well. Things should be going fast for all regions at this point. I saw that NA orders were already in mid February last I looked. Hopefully in the next few days.

Just seems kinda stupid, since (at least for now) England is still in the EU. Its like 500km away from here.

Arent they all shipped from the same warehouse when it arrives in europe?

I'm not sure, but I definitely remember seeing England getting treated different than the rest of Europe.

Oculus is pro-leave.

There is a new free UE4 rendered video short on the store called ABE VR. Kind of creepy.

Fair warning on NoLimits 2; the menus are pretty fucked in VR. They are usable, but don't render correctly at all. Once you actually get into the sim itself, it's fine.

Got my rift finally. The packaging is top notch. Unfortunately I have for the next month only a laptop with optimus gpu to use so I have to wait before I can delve into the wonders of the VR.

I usually don't like wishing misfortune to others, but for that incredible jerk who designed the whole optimus system I only wish that designing system like this comes back to bite his/her ass in the future.

Is there a thread on all vr titles available with descriptions and recommendations? I want to jump into vr, not sure if rift or vive but probably rift for lack of room, but I want to make sure there's enough there for me to go in.

Is there any 4K VR video content out there? I imagine that would look a lot better.

I'm guessing that may only exist in the porn realm at this point.

Mine will be delivered tomorrow. Finally time for some Elite: Dangerous VR. Been waiting years for this. :D I've held off on playing the Engineers update just so I can dive in with VR.

Taking fucking forever to get a damn replacement HDMI!!!!!!!! Aaaaaarrrrrrggghhh

You think they would just get the request and overnight it. How hard is that?

They apparently come in nice retail ready packaging though. Hinting that all of this is going to eventually be available at retail.

Just read Kevin's review, and it is pretty much my exact thoughts having played with the RIFT since Sunday now.

I knew it was not going to be Crysis level graphics but I was actually surprised how mediocre the graphics (mainly due to low resolution and assets) are. On another forum I compared them to PS2 level graphics, then later revised my statement to say end of PS2-Launch PS3 just because people were posting screenshots of Crash Bandicoot from 2001, and yeah, the visuals were not that bad, but I do think God Of War II looks better than most of the games, and that is a PS2 game.

With that said, I had not checked out Eve: Valkyrie until last night, and now we are talking. It looks pretty damn good overall, and the VR in it is very succesfully implemented. If that is a sign of what games can do, I am all for it and do hope other games start to meet its level and ultimately exceed it.

I also experienced motion sickness but it was with Edge Of Nowhere. After about 20 minutes I got super queasy. Have not gone back yet but hoping it was just because I was getting used to it all. I did just jump right into it on Tuesday night so perhaps I needed to play something a bit more traditional first. But the camera on that game was wonky for sure.

I can say that UE4 demo for Showdown is pretty damn good too, so going to check out this new one mentioned above ABE.

Also hoping to score some more games on the Steam Sale. Already have most of them on my Wishlist.

Yeah people should totally not sleep on EVE. Sounds like it had a real bumpy start but I have been playing it daily since I got my Rift last week and love it more every day.

Girlfriend also got sick playing Edge of Nowhere but only at certain angles so it sounds like it is not terribly uncommon. I felt a little odd the first few days in EVE but not a twinge since with anything.

Eve is definitely going to be my go to game for quite some time. I said on this other forum I almost feel as if Oculus should have just thrown people into it. They do that little demo in the beginning with the dinosaur and some other scenes. They should have added the training session from Eve to it or something just to show new people "hey, this game is actually very good." One of the main reasons I held off checking it out was the fact it is primarily a MP game, I just thought to myself there may be too much of an investment into getting good at it. Fortunately that is not the case.

I also did surprisingly decent for my first time playing as well. For a brief second in it when things got super intense and I was doing a barrel roll and weaving between two tight spaces I felt a tinge of motion sickness, but it went away. That was the only instance and I played at least an hour. I am actually pretty surprised that was all I experienced as things can get pretty hectic. So I am hoping Edge Of Nowhere was just a fluke because what I did play seemed pretty decent. The night I played Edge of Nowhere I was also trying a new tea out that wound up being pretty damn nasty. So I think that did not help matters. Oculus is definitely a full body experience, so I could definitely see how having a meal or drink that does not agree with your stomach could affect things.

Overall I do not regret my purchase, but if someone else were to ask me, I have been saying it may be best to wait, especially if it is going to make a substantial impact on your bank account. Fortunately I make a decent living, have no kids, and also have a wife that is supportive of this sometimes expensive hobby of mine, so I could "take a risk" financially. If others are not so fortunate and money is a bit tight, my recommendation would be to wait for everything to mature. Especially the software itself. It no doubt feels like we are at launch with the choice of titles.

Playable with an Xbox controller or does it really need a hotas?

HOTAS would be overkill, it's perfectly fine on a controller as it's a pretty arcadey experience - there's no real throttle control - you're always flying a constant speed, there's a button for boost and a button for brakes and that's about it.

So last night, I got mine set up, and it was my first substantial experience with VR. I've read through the last few pages of the thread and I dunno; I was thoroughly impressed with almost everything I tried. I'm sure when the gee-whiz-bang new-fangled tech part of this fades, then I'll be looking for more substantial content and I'll probably have some of the same concerns some of you are talking about in this thread, but for right now, I'm loving it.

Question though; Is there still a way to play those survival horror tech demos like Affected? If not, is there a good substitute? I want jump scares and all.

Looks like you can now buy the apps/games directly from the Oculus website, pretty sure you couldn't do that before.
Added the 2 new free apps Discovery VR and Abe VR.

Also just noticed Oculus started there Summer sale. Going to the list right now.

Hah! So they did. Link for the curious:

Haven't bought Chronos... might jump on it. At launch I passed on the game since I was entrenched in Dark Souls 3 and it was kind of similar.

Is the Project Cars I can buy on Steam VR for $15 the same as the $50 Rift store version?

Only the GotY edition is on the Oculus Store. Looks like they're about the same price now with the stores' respective sales. You don't need the GotY edition to play it in VR though.

No. The Oculus version is GOTY and has all the DLC.

The Steam VR version will work with the Rift though. That's the one I use.

Subnautica has a decent discount on it as well. 40% off.

Edit: Steam didn't drop Apollo but Oculus did.

(Prices in USD)
Some games I've heard good things about or have good experience with.

The below are the same prices on both stores:
Fated:The Silent Oath - $13.99
ioMoon - $13.49
Subnautica - $11.99
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes - $9.89
Windlands - $15.99
Titans of Space 2.0 - $6.79

Someone posted a list of % discounts on all Steam VR games on reddit. Here you go: https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/4phzkj/all_the_discounted_vr_games_in_the_steam_summer/

Steam only

Monstrum - $5.93
The Solus Project - $15.99
NoLimits 2 Rollercoaster Simulation - $29.99
House of the Dying Sun - $17.99
Volo Airsport - $8.70

Oh hey, Glitchspace now has Oculus Rift support in a beta branch. It's on sale for $8.70.
Same with Polynomial 2 - $10.19. I didn't even know this game existed!

Vive only until Touch - Buy these at your own risk if you're holding onto them until Touch comes out. They may get deeper discounts before then!

Tabletop Simulator - $9.99
Hover Junkers - $24.49
Audioshield - $14.99

Okay, done editing.

StudioTan

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
I guess the people who were thinking Chronos would go on sale soon were right :p

I was thinking about grabbing some of the cheaper Oculus games (some of those Gear VR ports). Just because I wanted some new content to try. Anything I should stay away from even at these discounted prices?

Any must haves in either sale?

Chronos is probably the best game on the platform if you enjoy 3rd person action games. 10+ hours. Fun exploration and combat. Really shows off the potential of 3rd person VR games.

I have heard good things about Fated so I may actually pick that up, but I heard its a short narrative game though

Vive owner here: how good is The Climb?

I'm hesitant because it uses Denuvo, which means that in order to play it, I'd have to downgrade the Oculus client, and (more importantly) there's no guarantee that this method will continue to work going forward—on the contrary, I'm pretty sure it won't.

This means The Climb would essentially be a $50 temporary rental, which is pretty expensive.

...worth it?

Some people swear by it. I haven't spent a lot of time with it, maybe an hour, but the whole craning your neck to reach the next hand hold mechanic has seemed a little touchy and left me kind of cold on it. Definitely take it with a grain of salt though as adjusting my sensor / spending some more time with it might have me singing another tune.

Has Pinball FX2 VR had anymore tables added?, the Oculus store price is ridiculous, they want £11 for 3 tables!!!??, when the proper game is free and tables are like £1.50 each
