I think it does, because we will have no choice for the next year if we want to upgrade to I7.

With some of the info released recently, like automatic overclocking. It could be interesting.

I planned on waiting a while to get into I7,.

Companies already have tried auto OC'ing tools and all have been pretty horrible. Until I see any concrete changes I'm not moving from my value stance of $700 PC's that can play all top of the line games fantastically. The price point is just unbeatable.

That said, it's still all speculation on what Intel (and AMD, I guess) will do with the i7 set, especially in regards to overclocking.

Under 1.42.

It depends on batch number and your cooling.

I have a Q807 batch at 4.0ghz 1.27 (could go lower). on air.

Get the box, give me the batch number.

Q815A190

it says 1.25V max on the box

Stock or aftermarket cooler?

I'd go with 1.3V AF and whatever can keep your temps in check with stock.

Probably whatever voltage you can scale up from 3.8Ghz to with no trouble, sometimes getting to 4.0Ghz takes quite a bit of an extra push.

I use a mini version of the Noctua NH-U12P.

Noctua NH-U9B

Not seen anything on the Q815 batch. The box is talking about safe, under warrenty Volts. You go over those to overclock.

:lol

I was just there.

If the recent E7200's are anything similar don't expect anything out of it. Hopefully I am wrong. I couldn't push the E7200 815A batch I had over 3040MHz without more than 1.35V.

Pretty shit-tastic considering mine does 3.8 with 1.3V

Here's a pic of a Q815A578 packed 22-05-08

Seems good, but those last 3 numbers can make all the difference sometimes.

Hay guys

I just upgraded my PC like a week ago, but I'm stuck playing on shitty VGA because my PS3 is occupying my DVI slot, and I don't feel like switching ports every time I wanna use my PS3 because it might damage my shit and I am sort of lazy. So, is there some sort of dongle I could buy so I can plug my PS3 and PC to the one DVI slot my monitor has along with my PS3?

how fast can i up the voltage and settings?

Do it slowly, then run something to test for stability.

Overclocking isn't something you can do in 30 minutes. It can take several days to get it perfect.

I'm going to have to get a new heatsink+fan for my cpu. I overclockedm my e6550 core 2 duo from 2.3 ghz to 2.6 ghz. my motherboard sucks at overclocking. perhaps with another cpu fan I can increase the voltage or something.

Google "DVI switch". These things already exist for VGA, so there shouldn't be any reason why it doesn't exist for DVI.

Posting question again since it got buried by like two more pages of DDR3 flaming/"discussion". :p

I'm wanting to get XP Pro legally. Are there any good options besides Dell's XP Pro/Vista Ultimate install disk combo? I may also run Ubuntu on another partition or something.

There's:

a) Vista Business downgrade
b) XP OEM licenses for purchase (questionable legality maybe? I don't know)

I would just buy THIS.

I think you're theoretically supposed to buy it with some hardware but AFAIK nobody pays attention to this.

Hey, I went down to put my parts on hold. The guy at the desk warned me off of the Asus P5K-SE and pushed me towards a more expensive model, the P5Q.

This is a budget rig and the motherboard is significantly more expensive ($45 more on what was a $95 board). I'm also confused as the reviews of the P5K-SE seem to be generally quite good, and middling at the worst.

Was this guy just trying to upsell me, or did he have a good point?

P5Q: http://ca.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=709&l4=0&model=2164&modelmenu=2

If I'm reading this correctly, the P5K should also have one more PCI-E slot too.

I took the pic when i was filling the coolant, and getting ready for first startup.

First system i build with liquid cooling, it was a bitch to put it together but i hope it pays off. Right now is running like a dream at a mildly overclock of 3.0ghz.

System description:

Case: Thermaltake Kandalf LCS 249€ (inbuilt liquid cooling system)
Power Supply: Thermaltake ToughPower 750W 124€
Motherboard: Asus Rampage Formula X48 227€
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 269€
Memory: Kingston DDR2-800 2x2Gb 40€ each
Graphics card: a "old" XFX 8800GTS 640 Mb (G80 core) i recovered from my old rig, i bought it in advance to get ready for my new system.
Hard disks: Western Digital VelociRaptor 300 Gb 219€ and Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 750 Gb 99€. Additionally i recovered a Maxtor 320 Gb from my old system.
Optics drive: using old ones, a relatively new LG DVD burner and a very old but reliable Pionner DVD drive.

And i think that's it.

Total price of the system: 1267€ without graphics card or DVD drives.

I'm planning to make a few upgrades (get a Bluray burner for example) in the near future, but it's not a priority right now.

Okay, after a big hiatus (four years) from my hardcore PC gaming. I'm finally coming back. Just making final preparations and buying the following rig in a month or so. What I got:

Graphic card - Sapphire HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 PCI-E
Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
Motherboard - Asus P5Q-E
RAM - Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X4096-6400C5 4GB
PSU - Corsair CMPSU-650TX

Total comes on about 600 euros. Not bad methinks. Few questions though.

1. Is the 4870 (or GT260? What's this about Physx I keep reading?) worth the extra 50 bucks? I'm not planning on playing on high resolutions. x1050 is probably good enough.
2. Should I change anything? Quad isn't important for gaming in the next 2/3 years right?
3. Is any of the above hardware subject to drop in price anytime soon?

Thanks in advance!
So, no one wants to input any advice?

better power usage and the advantage of using a single pcie slot with the x2. I would still get the crossfire board but with the 4850x2 so that down the road you can add another 4850x2 and have 4 way crossfire while using only 2 pcie slots.

Hai guys wats going on?!

Ok, so I want to dive into this whole "overclocking" thing and see what's that about. First things first, here's my setup:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 Rev 2.0
CPU: Intel Q6600 2.4ghz
Ram: 4 x 1gb of G.Skill ddr2 800mhz

I really want to overclock the cpu to a point without needing an aftermarket cooler. I suppose I'll need some reading material first to even understand what I'm trying to accomplish, as well as some monitoring tools for temperature and voltage, and then even more tools to tweak everything.

Anyone feel like spending some time helping an noob?

Just don't change the stock voltage and you shouldn't have to worry about going too high on temps. That being said, make sure to check temps and stability as outlined in that guide. You should be able to get a good OC out of that CPU.

Calgary.

The only important difference I can see between the P35 and P45 chipset is PCIe 2.0, the importance of which I'm unsure of without SLI/Crossfire... To me, it looks like the chipset difference is largely unimportant.

Aside from the chipset, it seems the main difference is a bunch of features and utilities on the P5Q that I'm sure will never be used.

So I guess I'm ignoring the guy at the counter on that one and picking up the P5K.
Excellent, that means I can pull all the parts together today.

Wait, I thought PCI-E 2.0 was PCI-E x16? They both have the slot for it...?

PCI-E 2.0 is basically x32. It has double the possible bandwidth. Most single high end cards (besides GTX2xx and X2 cards (take up around 10x). Like I said not sure about the new ones.

Generally 60C under load.

That quad is not going to go very far when cooled on stock. Well, as far as it could.

Non reference versions of ATI's new cards are going to be hitting the market within the next month. HIS already has one would with a new cooling solution. The non reference versions will vary in benchmarks, since the partners are now allowed to tweak them. They will also Overclock differently. So as they come up, read some reviews on the one you pick out, and don't assume they are all the same like the current reference models.

I'm a little over 3.9 GhZ running a 1.3V and my temps are at 56-58C under load. My ram timings are 4449. I could push it more but I think i'll leave it for now.
